- Full title reads: "To All Free Frenchmen".
MS. General Charles De Gaulle standing behind his desk speaking in French about the French defeat. He states that the defeat and the low morale of the French and the French government was caused by a superior mechanical force which the Germans were able to use against France, this lead to capitulation which was chosen by the Petain government. De Gaulle and his companions believe that the honour of France rests with him and his friends who will continue the war alongside the Allies who will be victorious.
De Gaulle's speech is played over footage of Germany's invading army and of refugees fleeing their homes. There are also shots of Allied tanks.
N.B. It seems odd that this item went out with a French Speech - Subtitles were not unknown and it seems strange that they weren't used. - MD.

For those who know some French but are not fluent, this is a splendid example of clear French, spoken in a decisive way that many non-French can understand! Subtitles not necessary.... The General was an excellent speaker.

I speak French. Conversational Quebecois French. But Charles de Gaulles made it clear. Do not surrender to the land and air forces from Germany. Also kick their asses. I'm Lebanese. Lebanon was under French control of the time, but my grandfather told me of the people against the axis powers of the time. I will never forget.
Soldiers are trained to speak clearly, especially for a commander.

Churchill and Roosevelt completely misjudged this man. He saved France from the Nazis, and would save it again when Algeria declared independence. De Gaulle was, in my opinion, the greatest National Hero combined Head of State of France since Napoleon.
Despite all his flaws, De Gaulle was a great man and a great leader. When things were at their blackest, he refused to take the easy route of accommodation and instead chose the hard, lonely path of courage, hope, and resistance. He never despaired of his country or its future. It's given to few men to save their country, and yet De Gaulle did it twice in one lifetime.

Notes about his pronunciation:
1. His "r" is trilled at the back of the throat, a feature still found in belgium but rare elsewhere.
2. He has longer vowels and especially nasal vowels, which are now short.
3. He has a very clear intonation, just like in italian.
Note that the last two may be in order to have a better audio quality on radio and also to have more authority.
People who said that France gave up are blatantly wrong. The government gave up due to its own unpreparedness, backwardness, and incompetence. The spirit of the people of France was never broken.
By the time of the landings in Normandy, the French Resistance and Free French Forces had come to be regarded as one entity, and their numbers were so great that they were an army to rival the size of the ones the rest of the allies landed.
Most civilians and soldiers sided with the Vichy regime. The British made an extra effort to evacuate French soldiers alongside British soldiers at the same time and most of those soldiers went back to surrender.

Sarcasm aside, the prevailing idea among Frenchmen at the time of capitulation was that the honorable thing to do was to surrender to the germans and share the fate of their fellow countrymen. The vast majority of France's colonial holdings, in fact, refused to submit to Nazi rule, and there were, by the end of the war, hundreds of thousands of Frenchmen, citizens and soldiers alike, who were part of the partisan network, officially recognized as the FFI (French Forces of the Interior) as a paramilitary group under the direct jurisdiction of the French government in exile, which had been officially recognized as the legitimate French government by the USA and Great Britain. This partisan network was immensely important to the success of operation Overlord (more commonly referred to as D-Day) and staged a military coup in Paris that tied down thousands of Wermacht troops during the Allied invasion of Northern France. My Grandfather served in the allied invasion of North Africa, and his unit was only able to land in Casablanca because of a secret deal of nominal cooperation signed between the Allies and French Nigeria.

I thank you for that. My grand father was resistant in Normandie. He was part of a group called Vengeance. they did some stealth actions, they did reco. to help the allies after Dday to take position inside the land. They even took part in combat to free some villages in normandy area. My Grand father was made prisoner before operation overlord and get deported. Their chief was executed. By luck they succed to escape and flee from the deportation train before they got to gemany. I'm very proud because in the same time a lot of french was siderated and resigned. It's because of this kind of person that we know the meaning of courage!

I came here because of the Blue Devils Drum Corps and their show on Henri Matisse called "The Cut-Outs". There's a portion in their show that features this speech to represent wartime France and the internal conflicts of whether Matisse should escape France during the war or if he should stay. So interesting learning all of this!

De Gaulle is such a splendid figure. Fought against the Nazis and accompanied the french resistance as he could. L’Appel du 18 juin 1940 will always be remembered. Very eloquent man. This occupied France showed how much people were ambitious to fight the inhumanity.
"On March 2, 1916, de Gaulle regiment was attacked and decimated, wiped out by the enemy while defending the village of Douaumont, near Verdun. His company was damaged during this fight and the survivors were surrounded. Then attempting a breakthrough, he was forced by the violence of the combat to jump into a shell hole to protect himself, but the Germans followed him and wounded him with a bayonet in the left thigh. Captured by German troops, he was treated at the Mainz hospital then interned in Osnabrück in Westphalia29. Believed to have died in combat, this disappearance earned him a mention in the army." During the world premiere, while he was a prisoner of the Germans de Gaulle became friends with a certain general...Toukhatchevsk ( both prisoners at Fort Ingolstadt). This same Toukhatchevki who was considered an absolutely remarkable soldier, a visionary - he shared De Gaulle's ideas on the primacy of tanks and aviation in future battles - which attracted the envious and paranoid jealousy of Satlin, which led him to torture and death in the cellars of Lubyanka. He and a soon a very huge percentage of the officers of the Red Army.
In 1966, on the occasion of a new official visit by De Gaulle to Moscow, the general mentioned Tukhachevsky and expressed his wish to meet his sisters, who were still alive.

The spirit is pretty much on point, but a few elements worth noting in particular:
-He also points at the infamy of Vichy France and the collaborationist government, insisting on the contrast between Free France and Pétain's state;
-He specifically mentions France's allies, since it would be both unreasonable not to give credit to them, and unrealistic not to recognize that the battle must be fought alongside other powers;
-And finally, he insists on the "mechanical" prowess of the enemy (as opposed to their strength in numbers) - this gives an idea that no, the Nazis are not in fact more numerous, thus lowering their image of this infinitely strong monster, and it also serves to remind everyone that science takes no sides, and that technological advances, which are what won these wars, are available both to the Axis, and also the Allies. And since the Allies have, in fact, more manpower, and more territory, they have an advantage in this matter.
De Gaulle was bold, as was Leclerc and a few others. Their "game" was dangerous; in 1940 they were almost meaningless exiles; in 1945, heroes.
They did nothing, it was brits and americans.
Since writing that, i've changed my POV a little, as distinguishing between the material and the moral, De Gaulle was a moral support and motivator. But for the material, there were some French who joined in at the end, but during a long doc by Arte (I think) on him, when he arrived in GB, Churchill or someone said 'where is his army ?', as he arrived with no one. So for them, (brits and allies) he was a nobody. But his personality and ideas pleased Churchill, but after a time they didn't get on. (there are articles about that).
He was far less known and renowned than Petain who was a military leader and known for Verdun WWI. That's why most French supported Petain.

@@davewroberts There are different versions of this speech he gave in the course of the week, I barely speak French but this one sounds most like the one used in the DCI show.
@@FBarnacle Yeah this version sounds clean and like the same inflection as the Blue Devils version. I wasn't sure what the voice in the show was exactly at first, I thought it was quotes from Matisse himself. Really love the use of this speech, and how it shows the hard lines, along with the percussion, the air raid sirens (you can barely hear them). This depicts the hard lines of the expoding bombs in Icarus, the repeated use of "we were subdued by the use of the mechanical" exactly what was going on in Matisse's life at the time. Directly opposing the soft organic outlines of the rest of the cut-outs throughout the rest of the show. All this comes together to make an amazing Masterpiece of a drum corps show. Glad to run into a fellow drum corps fan here :)

De Gaulle gets cred for fighting tirelessly throughout the 20s and 30s to get the French to modernize their military and pursue a more effective strategy than the Maginot line.
But couldn't, or it wasn't enough ?
The French government, after having asked for an armistice, now knows the conditions dictated by the enemy.
The result of these conditions would be the complete demobilisation of the French land, sea, and air forces, the surrender of our weapons and the total occupation of French territory. The French government would come under German and Italian tutelage.
It may therefore be said that this armistice would not only be a capitulation, but that it would also reduce the country to slavery. Now, a great many Frenchmen refuse to accept either capitulation or slavery, for reasons which are called: honour, common sense, and the higher interests of the country.
I say honour, for France has undertaken not to lay down arms save in agreement with her allies. As long as the allies continue the war, her government has no right to surrender to the enemy.
The Polish, Norwegian, Belgian, Netherlands, and Luxemburg governments, though driven from their territories, have thus interpreted their duty. I say common sense, for it is absurd to consider the struggle as lost. True, we have suffered a major defeat. We lost the battle of France through a faulty military system, mistakes in the conduct of operations, and the defeatist spirit shown by the government during recent battles.
But we still have a vast empire, our fleet is intact, and we possess large sums in gold. We still have allies, who possess immense resources and who dominate the seas. We still have the gigantic potentialities of American industry. The same war conditions which caused us to be beaten by 5,000 planes and 6,000 tanks can tomorrow bring victory by means of 20,000 tanks and 20,000 planes.
I say the higher interests of the country, for this is not a Franco-German war to be decided by a single battle. This is a world war. No one can foresee whether the neutral countries of today will not be at war tomorrow, or whether Germany's allies will always remain her allies. If the powers of freedom ultimately triumph over those of servitude, what will be the fate of a France which has submitted to the enemy?
Honour, common sense, and the interests of the country require that all free Frenchmen, wherever they be, should continue the fight as best they may.
It is therefore necessary to group the largest possible French force wherever this can be done. Everything which can be collected by way of French military elements and potentialities for armaments production must be organised wherever such elements exist.
I, General de Gaulle, am undertaking this national task here in England.
I call upon all French servicemen of the land, sea, and air forces; I call upon French engineers and skilled armaments workers who are on British soil, or have the means of getting here, to come and join me.
I call upon the leaders, together with all soldiers, sailors, and airmen of the French land, sea, and air forces, wherever they may now be, to get in touch with me.
I call upon all Frenchmen who want to remain free to listen to my voice and follow me.

Il n'a rien sauvé du tout. Charles était en Angleterre, il n'a rien fait de spéciale. Donc pourquoi son petit fils se donne des honneurs de cet homme ? C'est des mensonges et ses idées et opinions ne sont pas celles des 'français', qui ne sont absolument pas les mêmes qu'à cette époque. Ils s’accommodaient avec les allemands, sauf quelques-uns. D'ailleurs ils n'avaient pas trop le choix.

@@LeResistant09 ce que je fais. Mais l'histoire , (selon son âge) est soit vécue (en partie) ou lue des années après selon les historiens qui, souvent n'ont pas les mêmes avis, et qui ont des préjugés chacun s, selon leur penchant politique, religieux etc.
Il se créer aussi des 'légendes' qui persistent, surtout quand on fait la promotion d'un tel, ou on élimine un autre. Et qu'on donne une 'couleur' ou 'badge' à certains plus que d'autres.
C'est bien le cas en France surtout autour de WWII

Il a clairement fait appel aux français de résister face à l'occupant se qui n'est pas rien. Il ne faut pas oublier que les américains voulaient nous administrer après la libération et De Gaulle à empêcher cela. Il à maintenu notre indépendance. Quand le peuple ne voulait plus de lui, alors, il a démissionner. Est ce que Macron ferait ça ou bien Sarkozy, Hollande etc...? Non. Comment ce fait il que, encore aujourd'hui on puisse dire du mal de De Gaulle après tous se qu'il a fait ? C'est facile de dire "De Gaulle est un lâche qui a quitté la France pour aller au Royaume-Uni" surtout quand on n'est très mal renseigné à propos de lui.
@@alicie649 Mon grand-père a été pétainiste 4 mois, parce qu'il avait fait la première guerre mondiale et qu'il faisait confiance à Pétain, le seul chef qui avait commencé en épargnant les hommes . Mais...ça n'a pas durée longtemps. Et lorsque on est venu lui demander des "services" pour la Résistance il a dit oui sans poser de question. Et il était croix de feu, _un mouvement de droite républicaine assez dure, le contraire d'un communiste, ça n'a pas empêché les cocos du village - et apparentés - de lui faire confiance. Tout notre village de Beaumont le Roger était sur la même longueur d'ondes. (D'ailleurs, à la Libération, quand dans les rues il vit, bardés de médailles et le verbe haut, soudainement, des gens qu'il n'avait jamais rien vu faire, sinon ramper devant l'occupant, il est immédiatement rentré chez lui en demandant à ma grand-mère de lui retirer ses hochets personnelles, ses "preuves de Résistance", de découdre ça vite de sa veste et de les jeter). Enfin...c'est la vie et ses éternels profiteurs
En tous cas il suffit de lire le Journal de Galtier Bossière, les souvenirs de Danier Cordier, ou encore allez lire - comme je l'ai fait- les journaux clandestins qui commencent à sortir dès 1940 et ce qu'ils clament. Tous les français qui n'avaient pas du sang de navet rejetaient les allemands du fond de leurs tripes et de leurs âmes. Cane veut pas sire qu'ils étaient tous résistants, très loin de là, mais ils rejetait l'envahisseur. Le jour du défilé de la Wehrmacht à Paris les gens étaient blêmes, étouffaient leur larmes, c'était un jour de deuil et de honte . Du grand avocat très à droite Maurice Garçon révulsé à la vue de l'étoile jaune et aidant au maximum à sortir des griffes de la Gestapo ceux qu'ils pouvaient grâce à son entregent jusqu'à des artistes apolitiques comme le charmant poète Desnos -mort pour faits de résistance au camp de Theresienstadt -, à part les margoulins qui se faisaient de l'argent et l'infime minorité d’authentique collabo, les français n'attendaient qu'une chose : que les allemands soient vaincus.Mon grand-père paternel m'&a raconté comment le jour de l'annonce de la défaite de Stalingrad, tout Paris sentait la joie, discrètement dehors, parce qu'ils n'étaient pas à prendre avec des pincettes la race supérieure qui sentait que ça branlait dur dans le Reich millénaire. Allez donc étudier les travaux de l'institut d'histoire contemporaine, notamment les années 41, 42, tout ce qu'on a pu récupérer, comme lettres, journaux intimes etc :tout pointe vers un rejet massif des allemands. Encore une fois, il n'est que de lire le journal au jour le jour de Jean Galtier Boissière (édition du Quai Voltaire). C'est ça, la vérité de la France sous l'occupation. Même ce vieux pétainiste de Léautaud dans les quelques 3000 pages (sur près de 20 000, lu 4 fois) se désespère du "mauvais esprit" des parisiens quine sont pas touché par la "politesse" allemande. Il en rage de nous voir, nous français, si "haineux" (Léautaud dixit) si remontés contre nos conquérants si propres sur eux. Il faut voir sa rage quand il se rend compte que plus de 80 % des gens qu'il rencontre sont anti-allemands. Que ça plaise ou nom, voilà ce qu'était l'état d'esprit d'une majorité du peuple de France.

La résistance, c'est dès l'été 1940 des royalistes, des droitards, des patriotes, des pétainiste etc... il faut attendre juin 1941 pour que les communistes cessent leur collaboration avec les allemands (après avoir saboté le matériel de l'armée française, distribué des tracts pour saboter le moral des soldats français, avoir fait des courbettes aux allemands pour faire reparaitre l'Humanité etc) pour les voir commettre des attentats stupides contres les allemands avec pour seul résultat d'entrer dans une spirale de répression allemande toujours plus sanglante.

For us French speakers it does not seem "Frenchy French" to us, it is a normal speaking, of course. De Gaulle speaks solemnly here, so perhaps a particular tone and articulation. It gives you perhaps an even more Frenchy impression, more ridiculous (?) therefore compared to your own language, your pronunciation and your ear. But we also have fun with the English pronunciation. It's like living in a different world when you don't speak the same language.
