An extract from a programme looking at the Puck Fair Festival in 1965 which takes place in Kilorglin, Co. Kerry.
The ‘Discovery’ series ran on Telifís Éireann from 1964 to 1967. ‘Discovery’ brought stories from around the country in the form of 30 minute programmes.
This episode of ‘Discovery: Puck Fair’ was broadcast 11 October 1965.
Love how devoted the cameraman was to getting the shot of the child falling off the caravan.
Burst me shite at that part
I was at a “heritage day” event down in Mayo about 3 years ago and the fella in charge organized for a “tinker” to come out from Castlebar and set up a “tinkers camp” in the field. He was calling the traveler a tinker right to his face. I never laughed so much in my life
😂😂😂😂
I'm wondering if that's the elder Jackie Healy-Rae? Lovely footage, it's lovely to hear the little children playing.
lol, imagine the uproar if RTE broadcast this today referring to "tinkers".
What’s the problem with the word “tinkers”? Is it a social stigma? I believe they were called tinkers because of their trade work with tin, making and repairing tin buckets, etc.
@@joenavanodo3780 There's a very popular reel in Irish Music called "The Yellow Tinker"...
not to mention initerants
Ha..Ha.. "The Local Comeattea'...If I got a penny for every time I heard that expression I'd be a wealthy man..The auld pioneer pin was fierce popular in those years...😀
I wear mine upside down
2:32 you can see for yourself how neat and tidy they keep the places they visit.
They were there when they moved in
U wouldn't get a turnip in the whole of Kerry now

In 60 years ....Travellers behavior has gotten worse....!
People of culture.
Tinkers ,life n soul of the party😀
Der Kommissar of the Komittee.
Travellers and Anglo-Irish landlords, remnants of a pre-Famine Ireland.
i saw no caravans this year in the town
Travelers back then were poor and caused little or no trouble. That was back then.
Fuckers would rob the eyes out your head
@@jimosullivan4866and your head as well
Yeah, completely different breed of people than when my parents were growing up in the 50s. A lot of people had time for them.
Not much has changed in 56 years..
Take the next step now and ban using a live goat. High time to put a goat STATUE up there and let the wild goat go wild, the poor thing must be terrified. Tradition be damned at one time it was tradition to go barefoot and hungry but now we can afford better things. Let's give the goat his freedom and show the world that we are civilized and kind. Come on Kerry !!
Who’s going to pay for the goat STATUE Martha? Tell me that
Hon the Kingdom!!!
Torturing a goat and making the excuse that it is for fun, is barbaric.
I agree completely. It's nasty.
Does puck fair still go on?
Still going
My Dad often went to it..I think it was basically a drinking festival..from start to finish..
Still is
Gwan ye hoor
If only these men could see this ethnic group today... You think it was bad then.
