Hierba Santa or Acuyo in Spanish, it is used in Mexican cuisine. Perfect as "albondigas" (meatballs) seasoning. I used to grab one hole leaf, drop an egg or two, add salt, wrapped it and place in a pan which should be maintained at medium/low fire. By the time the leaf gets toasted and dark, the egg is already cooked.

Piper sanctum, long treated as a distinct species, is here reduced to a synonym of P. auritum, which is a popularly known plant in Mexico. The oldest binomial for the species to which the name Piper sanctum was misapplied is P. commutatum, a taxon ranging from central Mexico south to Costa Rica and occurring in cloud forest, tropical perennial forest, tropical subdeciduous forest and humid canyons in tropical deciduous forest, at elevations from sea level to 2050 m. Synonyms of Piper commutatum include: P. papantlense, P. nudum, P. diandrum, P. membranaceum, and P. venulosum, among others.

I wish I can share the same enthusiasm as him regarding this plant. It is engulfing my front and back yard and is taking up plenty of garden space with tough thick shrub and root systems. Very aggressive, weed like plant. I’ll do without the root beer smell if I can get rid of it! Thanks.

Sell the leaves to Mexican markets you will make a fortune. Spanish Conquerors thought like you when they came across tomatoes and squash, the same thing with avocados US citizens did not what to do with avocados in the sixties and early seventies, now many countries around the world are growing avocado trees including European countries like Greece

@@teresaguerrrasalazar4964 I don’t think like a colonizer if that’s what you are trying to imply. I just like to garden and I find the plant to be very aggressive and invasive to the soil and very tough to dig out once they establish themselves. You can’t plant anything around it because it will engolf the entire zone of whatever you’re trying to plant. I’m not saying there’s any value to this plant, but it’s not worth the trouble of introducing to your garden if you want to cultivate other things like real food and don’t really need the medicinal properties it’s known for. I live in Hawaii so there’s not a lot of Mexican herbal grocery locations that would really buy this from me.

I don't have the enthusiasm that he has about this plant. I'm trying to kill the one that is overtaking my yard. I bought it at a flea market, cute little plant was only about 8 inches high. I definitely don't have a green thumb, so yes" this plant can thrive without care, It's huge and I want it gone. I'm going to try round up.

Same although it is our neighbour who has this plant growing rampant! We have tried to use round up and it still won’t die off. We’re in Australia it’s not deemed a noxious weed but according to the American noxious weed website the only way to kill this is with fire.
