"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends".
The Chapel of the Four Chaplains is at the Philadelphia Naval Business Center.
May those four courageous gentlemen forever and for all eternity know the true kingdom of God. No sacrifice is greater no mercy is stronger than giving up one’s life so that others may live.
Thank you.
Heroes didn’t always carry guns. May they all Rest In Peace.
The Leopoldville was a tragic loss on Christmas Eve 44 I believe.
763 lost, due to poor crew, and command, as well as bad luck sinking on a holiday while everyone was out partying.
My Chaplin in school was a paratrooper medic. Jumped on D-day went all the way to Berlin eventually.
Great video Ryan!!
The Medal of Honor is NOT awarded to servicemembers killed in action exclusively: it's awarded to survivors as well...
Thank you for showing the chapel.
Wonderful video. Father Maternowski, the only chaplain killed on D Day was from the parish I grew up in. Mater Dolorosa in Holyoke, MA
My grandpa was aboard when it was sunk.
My Father was a troop replacement out of Maine, he told me about the coast guard cutters zipping around. And they wouldn't tell ya where your going until it sifted thru the troops.
heroes i don't know any other word but hero
Sky-pilot. We honor you all.
Were there ever Eastern Orthodox Christian chaplains assigned to New Jersey or the other Iowas?
I don't think so (I could be wrong). Usually (which I have no documents to confirm that), the setup is for any command that has one chaplain billet, the chaplain is usually a Protestant one. Some bigger deck ships are allocated two or more chaplain billets; in that case at least one Roman Catholic chaplain. In addition, at least what we know until 2007 at the latest, the Navy had a Thirds rule on selecting chaplain candidates: 1/3 mainline Protestants, 1/3 Roman Catholic, and 1/3 others, so there were only a very handful of Eastern Orthodox chaplains in the Navy when NJ was in commission.
Excellent content.
Really moving video. I've enjoyed all your videos I've seen, but this one made a subscriber out of me.
Thank you for the video. My grandmother and Clark Poling were cousins. I recall my great uncles, one who survived Pearl Harbor and one who was at Guadalcanal talking about him and his dad Dr. Daniel Poling.
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to serve. I’m not familiar with this story. It’s extremely powerful. Thank you Ryan. It definitely reached me. May God bless all of those that night. Especially these four.
In Bridge over the River Kwai, the (supposed) Major Shears (played by William Holden) was on the cruiser Houston and was captured by the Japanese after it was sunk and placed into the POW camp that most of the movie takes place in.
Something to think about, instead of having your notes on index cards in your lap, a white board off to one side of the camera works pretty well.
