- Members of the community celebrated the 25th anniversary of the International Day of Peace, by planting the first peace pole at the city administration building. Area Rotary Clubs are promoting a global initiative to focus their communities on peacebuilding and conflict resolution.
More than 250,000 peace poles have been planted throughout the world. Colorful poles covered in award winning children’s artwork will be planted in various high visibility locations throughout the city to start community conversations about not only peace, but also kindness, unity, friendships, tolerance, love and generosity.
The General Assembly of the United Nations established the International Day of Peace in 1981. Since then, more than a quarter of a million peace poles have been planted around the globe.
