      My family replaced a 2006 Odyssey with 200K miles with exactly the same 2017 Pilot EX-L AWD five years ago, and for the very same reasons. Our experience virtually the same as yours. We get a consistent 28 mpg on long road trips... usually averaging more like 75 mph. At 70K miles, the only issue has been an intermitent check engine light that the dealer solved with a software reflash... and charged us half the book rate... just $90. Yes, we do miss the greater space of the Odyssey on occasion, but we really like the all weather capability of AWD, living in Michigan and travelling in the Northeast most of the year. We are looking forward to another five years of reliable service. Thanks for an excellent review.

    Great review and I can vouch for all of the points that you made. Doing the AWD rear differential service is key to not feeling the transmission issues. It really helps. With any Honda vehicle and this is my 3rd (2 Accords 91 "360K in 17 years" & 03 "traded for Pilot after 13 years with 150K" ), following the suggested maintenance schedule will keep your vehicle running like the Honda reputation. My 2017 Pilot EX-L AWD with 68K is the best and I only use BP 93 octance. Trust me if you follow this you will love the ride. Original tires were a disappointment but purchasing the Michelin Defender LTX with 70K mileage warranty makes my Pilot drive like a luxury Cadillac. IJS.

    Thank you so much for the review! Very thorough, yet to the point. My previous vehicle was an Acura RDX and one of my favorite options on the vehicle was the SH-AWD. Unfortunately, paired up with a four-cylinder turbo, came at a price of horrible gas mileage, (about 20mpg). Fun to drive, but costly. It looks like pairing up that AWD with V6 is the ticket. Additionally, I am ready for a larger SUV so I think this is exactly the way I want to go. I am considering a Toyota Highlander, but I like your comments about having more space in the pilot.

    I have a 2017 exl pilot and definitely did not regret getting at all. I live in Canada so we definitely see a heavy amount of snow and paired with good winter tires you will have no problems especially with awd and snow mode. The adaptive cruise control is a blessing especially on long road trips. It may not have all of the kwirks other cars have but what it has is definitely adequate. In my opinion it has one of the comfiest 3rd row even my dad loves sitting there on road trips. The safety features definitely work especially the break mitigation system as I was driving on a corner and a tractor came out of nowhere and the car stopped by itself. Definitely recommend this car or newer models

    Awesome review bro! It was exactly the kind of review I was looking for! I was thinking of upgrading my Mitsu Outlander with a 4 banger to a Pilot. Fuel efficiency was one of the top reasons I picked the Outlander 7-seater. Outlander at cruise speeds best MPG was 31. City/Hwy average 26MPG. Thanks for taking the time to get all the footage in different seasons! Must of took a long while to complete this vid!

    Hey there! I’m currently 17 and I’m driving a Honda pilot elite 2017 and I have to say it’s amazing. It was once my dads then my moms, now it’s mine and they have their own cars but from all of us it’s held up really really great. We’ve been through a lot in it doing ski trips and taking many many people along in the car with us altogether. Now that it’s mine I enjoy the 9 speed myself and use the manual every once in a while. Before that we used to have an oddesy and from what I observed about the right mirror camera is that the left driver doesn’t necessarily need to have the camera because no obstructions can interfere with the visual of it, while the right can be a little more tricky sometimes to peer around a passenger in the right seat and just gives a quicker up front view of the mirror!

    I have a 2015 Accord V6 Coupe with the same 6 speed automatic transmission and I absolutely love it! Zero issues. Just make sure that you are draining and filling your transmission about every 30k miles. My car has 65k and I've changed mine twice myself. Easier than changing the oil because there is no filter. It drains out between 3 to 4 quarts! You HAVE TO measure what comes out so that you know exactly what to put back in! If you do this religiously every 30k, this transmission will last you a very very very long time 😉

    You’re 100% right about the tried and true nature of the 6 speed transmission vs the 9 speed. I just traded my 2018 9 speed Odyssey for this exact vehicle. The 9 speed is a disaster. It’s an over engineered POS from Germany. The maintenance on it is excessive and I hated the shifting (I.e. jerking) shifts. It also tries to match your driving habits. I don’t want a computer guessing what I want. I want to know where the power band is and know where to get it when it want it.

    What a review. By a very very intelligent human being! Thank you so very much. I'm a Lexus guy and was looking to get the GX 460. I'm obviously buying used so a little apprehensive about a used Honda with 70-80k on it. Yes it would be at least 10k cheaper than a GX, but is it going to be reliable going forward? What attracts me to the Pilot is its actual usable 3rd row.

    13:05 2017 Elite here. Just wanted to piggyback here for anyone buying used. The Elite with the 20 inch and 9-speed transmission is amazing for speed. I've pushed high 4/low 5 seconds in Sport Manual on a newly laid road. The ZF9 transmission is made by reputable transmission makers so the Elite transmission trumps all the 6 speeds in reliability, speed, and towing across half the country (do NOT use cruise control when towing). The ATF cooler helps a lot. The only issue is that it feels very clunky when going into reverse. Sand mode + wet pavement is a potent combo for fun sliding. I still get about 21 mpg with everything factored in and about 27-28 mpg over some long haul trips.The 9-speed is standard on all trims for 2021.
    Side note: Let the car take a breather on extremely hot days lest you cook the blindspot monitoring sensors, the transmission, and the idle-stop system. Transmission put it self into neutral and engine idle-revved to 8000 rpm until it was manually shut off. 30 minutes of cooling and all systems were back, but the idle-stop system took over a month to work right again.

      Agree, technologies sometime can be annoying. Subaru has the options of turning of adoptive cruise control while maintaining collision mitigation system. For the Pilot, the only way to disable ACC is to turn off the entire sensing system, which will put a warming light in your face the whole time. LOL

    I own a 2016 Pilot and a 2007 CR-V - both bought new. This review is spot on. Both handle well.
    My Pilot handles like a sports car and corners better than high clearance suv's. I have owned and driven many 'off road' vehicles that were poor performers 'on-road'. The Pilot is an excellent 'on road' vehicle with some 'off-road' capability, and seriously good handling. (My older Pathfinder was a rollover waiting to happen). It tows well with smaller loads but it's more racehorse than tow truck. It runs through high mountain passes, and long winding roads with the best of them, and is able to go beyond the pavement when it gets there. The sport in this suv includes its on-road handling ability. Most suv lives are spent on-road, not off. If you want an suv that handles great on-road ? This is it.
    If you want true off-road buy a high clearance 4x4 vehicle that is Trail or Off-Road rated. It will not handle as well 'on-road', as it does 'off-road'. There's a price for that capability. My Pilot can handle a hot ride down a winding road, and still go off road and not get stuck.
    Watch the height to width ratio and center of gravity on these things. My Brother got scalped when he rolled his Blazer and tore the roof open. That's why they add roll bars to them.
    Pilot is low and wide, built like an awd race car. You'd have to work at it to roll it. I could have rolled some of my suvie's with a flick of the wheel at the right moment.
    I believe Honda has a safer 'on-road' vehicle here than most suv's based on that. I'd replace it with the same thing I chose last time.
    My 'off-road' vehicle of choice is a 4x4 Z71 Off-Road Edition. That's a different critter entirely.

    I hope I had waited for the 2017 Pilot before getting my 2016 model. It’s really true that you should never buy the first model year car of any brand. At 45,000 miles it just reported multiple warning lights, one of them is Engine System Problems. Lots of owners reported the same problems on a Pilot owner’s forum. They all said that all the injectors need to be replaced, and if you are out of the three year warranty, you gonna have to pay at least $1,600. I first owned a 2016 pilot exl...the dash kept lighting up after a year of having it. The dealership couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. After the 4th time bringing it to get repaired with no success they gave me a 2017 Touring in place of it. After 40k miles on the touring the dashboard lit up again like Christmas and more frequently but of course they couldn't figure out what was wrong. Well, come to find out the fuel injectors on these new models are flawed. They blame the eco mode because i was told a fuel injector would normally have 4 spray holes but with the eco option in this vehicle there are only 2 spray holes, causing them to clogg and easily breakdown. $3000 on 6 fuel injectors, 6 coils and 6 spark plugs and it hasn't been 4 years yet is outrageous. I would hope Honda does a recall on this part. Until they do i would NOT recommend this headache.

      I am sorry to hear you had major repair like that at such a low mile, especially with Honda!!
      I have 2017 exl and having annoying wind noise from front windows and high whining noise at highway speed(above 65 miles) whenever accelerating even slight acceleration at crushing speed. I visited dealer several times but hasn’t figured out yet. My warranty is about to expire so I am going back to dealer again so even warranty expires dealer has recorded of problems existed from new so if something happens related to drive train in the future I can reference to this problem.

    Good video. I love my 2017 Pilot EX-L (28,989 miles). The Lane Departure and Collision Avoidance were not standard like they are now. I am guessing that the reason there isn't a left-side blind-spot camera is because it would mean looking to the right at the monitor before gliding left. Was there a lot of service due at 30,000 miles?

    • @bebe0928
      @bebe0928  4 года назад +1

      Thanks, at 30,000 miles the dealership mainly will do the oil changes and filters and most "inspections". I did all that myself, plus the transmission fluid change. At 60,000 miles there will be something that i would need the dealership to work on like the rear diff fluid change, and do other things myself

      Bought out my 2017 Honda exl and I love it. I have heard issues with touring models because they are 9spd transmissions. The exl is 6 spd. I would stay with 6spd as there is no need for 9spd.

    You are so concerned with the trailer hitch then you compromised with the running board for off road , well and you payed a lot more for installation. The after market hitch is $250 with the wire. I found that the after market hitch is way more solid than the Honda . Well said on the situation. Great video and I bought a few months ago a pilot and loved it. 👍😎

    Good point about the transmission, but with the technology that's out there I am hoping the 9 speed shouldn't be a problem. However you are right about the vehicle having to figure out that many gears to shift down. Either way great choice.

    • @rickhansen7417
      @rickhansen7417 3 года назад +2

      The 9 speed is also more expensive to change the fluid. It’s worth finding out the price difference before you purchase. It’s recommended to do every 30K miles.

      Just FYI, the 2019 EX-L still has the 6-speed transmission that he references in the video and their were some refresh improvements for 2019. I purchased mine used & am pleased with it.

    If i discover you are going to start shilling for EV's or hybrids, if you shill for anything but internal combustion engines, we are through. You know how i feel about EV and green energy, they are downright un-American. I fell in love with you because you are practical, down-to-earth, a combustion engine type of guy. Don't change that.

    I have two Honda Pilot EXL. My first one is 2006 and the second is 2019. I could say that my 2006 model is much much better. First is the leather and the sidings of my 2006 is much much better. Secondly the windshield of the 2006 is much better. It seems that the newer generations of Honda Pilot EXL’s sidings and leather look cheaper. I only had my Pilot 2019 for 2 months and hit by small pebble and left a crack. My 2006 Pilot had no problem with those small pebbles hitting the windshield, Also just 2 weeks ago my car is starting to jerk at acceleration so I’m taking it to the dealership on Friday.

    Superb review. Thank-you. I am also considering a EX-L Pilot, as consumer reports and most reviewers don't like the nine speed transmission and I like a traditional shift gear. How is your leather wearing? In my prior Accords the leather seems to get this shiny look to it no matter how I take care for it.

    The only con I felt about the honda was the choice of the tires honda chooses for there car the bridgestone duelers worst tire ever.i love my 2020 exl with nav and res I bought it with 27k on it and the first thing I got rid of was the tires and bought 4 new michelin defenders tires what a dream to drive now with nice tires.i love the car .can't wait to drive it in the snow

    • @easyedmtc
      @easyedmtc 11 месяцев назад

      Yes original tires are the worst. I have the same 2017 EX-L with Navigation and purchased the Michelin Defender LTX and love the ride. I purchased new and have 68,000 in 7 years and the only thing the dealer didn't mention was doing the rear differential service. That service will eliminate any transmission issues that you think you might have. Preventative maintenance at the dealer is the key to the longevity of any Honda vehicle. This is my 3rd Honda and had a 91 Accord that i sold after 19 years with 360,000+ miles.

    • @pilot2020

      @easyedmtc I had a 91 accord cb7 I sold it with 490k.seeing this was 1 yr later lol.still love my michelin defenders ltx m/s.i live in Massachusetts.the pilot has seen no shop time besides tires I do all my own work.i bought car at 27k .by 30k I put new tires on did rear diff,transfer case,and 3x drain and fill on transmission.i have 36k on car now also did s vcm muzzler by pass.and do oil changes at 40%.I have had all hondas .I had 86 accord with 450k,91 accord sold at 490k,99 accord with 350k sold ,2000 accord with 310k sold.had a kid got a 08 crv traded in at 130k they gave me $7500 then bought 2020 pilot exl nav res for $30k

      Not really regrets, but sometime i do wish I have the van for trips that don't involve AWD situations, which is majority of them lol. But the sportiness of the Pilot do make up for more than I miss.

    great review. Many thanks for the effort. couple questions; any issues you facing with the 6 speed transmission? am reading that some models are having a problem on the pilot 6 speed trans. the 2nd question, how is the honda maintenance care program? are they any good ? expensive?

      @bebe0928  Год назад

    Do you still have the pilot? I just bought a 2016 exl with the 6 speed for the same reason as you. Although i just found out about all the issues the pilot have had with their trasmission. Now im scared. I didnt even research the transmission becaise i thought Honda would never have this issue. Just i was wrong. How often are you changing your transmission oil? Thanks
