It is interesting that until this past decade you never saw Dobermans in their completely natural state, with long tails and floppy ears. To me that just doesn't look like a Doberman but the look is getting more popular. Kind of silly to cut the tails off, I guess, but it does keep them from knocking things off the coffee table. As for ear cropping, an upright ear improves sound location and prevents ear mites and ear infections, so there is some logic to the practice.
You are completely right about the ears - the Doberman was a pretty healthy race, but now with the floppy ears a future owner must be prepared for multiple, painful eat infections that require treatment... So while I'm usually against doing things to your pets to make their look "better" I believe that cropping ears of Debermans should be the norm - not for the look. For their health and happiness.
My two American Dobermans are both all natural. I just like the looks of it. We don't need to get all in a twist over this subject. The breed is great dog cropped or natural. Just opinion. Everyone has one. The tail can indeed be brutal to a man, it's so strong and just at that height. I can understand about the tail!
@darrenoat Okay, what's the reason then? In nature there are NO wild canines with a floppy ear that covers the ear canal. Floppy ears have been the result of genetic mutation that occurred during human-inspired canine breeding programs. But if you love your dog the way he is, that's fine. My own dog at the moment is a big beautiful Golden Retriever with the characteristic floppy ears and long tail (which on Goldens looks great) and I wouldn't trade him for any dog in the world.
@Taud Scientific evidence? How about common sense? An upright ear collects sound waves and channels them into the ear canal. A floppy ear actually covers the ear canal and impedes sound location. It is interesting to note that the further back in time you go, the more robust the dogs appear to be with much thicker necks and bodies. I do like the elegance of the modern Doberman but I think it's been over-done to the point where far too many Dobermans appear spindly and weak and obviously incapable of performing their original task of personal protection dog. [Footnote: I've found the females are even more alert and protective than the males are.]
Prefer personally the breed between the 1910-1970, it was a total different dog. Sure you had also than different types but what we in general now see is such a shame. Where is the athletic, fit for funtion, noble and trustworthy dog.........I'm to young so never experience the breed from the past but I'm not blind and allthough I never own such a type I do believe and feel there was a huge difference. For the future of this noble breed I'll do hope that there will be breeders who also prefer the more old and steady types not the heavy ' hypertypes ' from these days. Let not start about temperament, drives and health issues that is the main challenge because else there will be no future at all. It is a quest to find the will keepers of the breed with knowledge about history and a goal for the future and not because of EGO, STATUS or MONEY.......NO just because of respect and the fact they have experience their spirit and want to behold that also for future generations.
Regardless of the cropping docking argument, just look at the pictures to see the history of the development of a beautiful breed, until it starts going wrong towards the end. People will say this modern thing is the European Dobermann, Great Dane sized, uglier than a Rottweiler, completely lacking in elegance, slab sided. We who were in the breed in the 70s, 90s and 90s in the UK know otherwise.
...these pictures are mainly from copies of copies... which were copied from old books, magazines or aged photographs. The media (paper) they were on as well as the original prints were not that good in the first place...the ensuing years took a toll on them too. But, if you look real close, you'll see the evolution of the Dobermann, in all its twists and turns. The Dobermann is probably one of the better photographic documented Working breeds, of all the guard breeds. Most other breeds were Documented by oil paintings, hand drawings. What I like about these slides is you can see the many twists, turns and changes that breeders introduced into the breed - before coming to the still unfinished product we have today.
exactly!!! When I watch dog shows I think sure they look good, but can they still serve the purpose for which they were created in the first place? F! no! then again in today's society the original Doberman would get the same bad rep as pit do now, and even then they still get some bad rep here n there.... my dobies don't meet the "AKC STANDARD" but I bet if someone ever broke into my home they'll be on it in seconds, doing what they were bred to do. :)
Ahhh... but then - it would NOT be a Dobermann!.... Unfortunately, the many breeds, cross-breeds, out crosses and timing - required to formulate the Dobermann breed are so intricate, that changing one thing can easily disturb the end product. In the early years of the Dobermann, they crossed in the greyhound... it so affected the breed that it took decades to recover the signature head, 'muzzle' and 'stop' which marked the Dobermann.... the good thing - was the incorporation of speed in the Dobermann breed - but even to this day - we occasionally see a throw back to the greyhound head ... narrow muzzle and jaw line. There was a movement to open breeding to bring in genetic standing ears and natural short tail. But, they found that caused a lot of instability to the temperament of the breed - that was in the early 1900's. The particular "happy accident' which brought about the Dobermann is a lot trickier than you might think. Maybe today, with 'gene-spicing' and other technologies, we may see another try at bringing these two traits into the breed? But I would wonder if that would be accepted as a true, Dobermann or a GMO aberration - Genetically modified organism?
lmao, cropping is illegal in my country, and has been for many years, and docking in the last 10-15 years. I fully support the bans, and I not only own dogs, I own a dobie. So...........maybe think before you type? Most people in the UK who own dobies are in full approval of the bans. Look outside your own country maybe.......
... Most people in the UK who own dobies are in full approval of the bans. Look outside your own country maybe....... - I disagree!! The whole premise of banning cropping and docking was advanced based on a lie. The police were unable to regulate street dogs being used in crimes, so they attacked the visible signs of fighting dogs....allowing them the convenience of killing any dogs (good or bad) which "fit the profile", summarily - without proof of any intent or participation in criminal enterprise. What I hear, see and understand is "most" of the people who approve of the ban are ignorant or are reacting to the "Larger Louts", and street hoodlums who infest the back-waters of London ghettos. This is in reaction to the malevolent anti-social dregs of society who account for the resurgence of Pit fighting, dog fighting and street crime in the EU. Those dogs are seldom, if ever, pure bred, pedigreed or documented Dogs (and even fewer of them are even actual Dobermanns)! The street scene for those aggressive louts tend to be more interested in Dogos, Corsa Canarios, Pit bulls, Tosas, Rottweilers, American Bull dogs (mixes)... etc. The dogs you see engaged in these crimes don't interest criminals - they are too expensive to waste in the pits and too smart to use as fodder - 'cause it takes years of training to produce a good, effective guard dog. Not something you would have "shot on sight" by some trigger happy cop. So, the real point goes the heart of the matter - trained working dogs, guard dogs and show dogs are regulated - while the street flotsam is unregulated and free to breed these mix breed, mis-begotten monster dogs.

We who were in the breed in the 70s, 90s and 90s in the UK know otherwise.
European Doberman 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I will have them
@aronsthebest i disagree
I agree....breeders took a well bodied able working dog and ruined him for conformation reasons. IMO the working breeders should take the Dobe back.
Dislike for the way you made this slide show. I wasn't able to see a single picture.
artiyom This dog was made in the old days which means there's black and white pics and in the old days they didn't have good camera
...these pictures are mainly from copies of copies... which were copied from old books, magazines or aged photographs.
🥲
lets breed dobermann to malinois so they can enter knpv
Ahhh... but then - it would NOT be a Dobermann!....

Ziggy Coxon I have a Dobie with his ears not clipped he so sweet and protects me
Lmao, if We follow suit with everything that Europe does, We would have been ruled by a king, taken over by the Nazi party, and now run over by the middle east. Just keep believing what your government tells you. We can choose and think for ourselves here. It's called freedom.
it's very important for me to know by fotos the history of dobermann.thanks
