How quickly we've forgotten the lessons of the Dust Bowl in the US and (where I'm from) the Dirty Thirties of the Canadian prairies. This is a darned good reminder to protect our topsoil. Thank you, Melissa.
The work that John Kemp's group at Advancing Eco Agriculture... has found that the fastest way to build Soil Organic Matter (And Soil Health) is to first: 1.) OPTIMIZE PLANT HEALTH...... To 2.) Optimize Photosynthetic Efficiency.... To 3.) Optimize Root Exudate Production. They achieve this OPTIMIZED PHOTOSYNTHESIS using Frequent Timely PLANT SAP ANALYSES... to Formulate a Targeted Mixture of Nutrients for Foliar Spray Applied Nutrient Solutions. Long Story Short: This typically raises Photosynthetic Efficiency from 10 to 15% to 40 to 60%. That puts MORE CARBON from the Atmosphere into the soil than is feasible using compost or manure applications... AND... it Feeds the RIGHT MICROORGANISMS for the plants.... the Organisms that Actually Feed the Plants Optimally. Compost helps...but feeds mostly Microorganisms the DIGESTS THE COMPOST....NOT directly feeding the Organisms working around the roots that EXTRACTS AND DELIVERS the needed micronutrients. As a BONUS... This method of Soil Regeneration Also OVERCOMES 100% of Pest and Diseases. Every "INCURABLE PLANT DISEASE" has been controlled completely (so far) simply by optimizing Plant nutrition...no Pesticides or Fungicides or Herbicides are needed to control ALL DISEASES. THIS SYSTEM is the fastest and allows for Crop Yields.... DURING THE 3 TRANSITION YIELDS....... to maintain(OR INCREASE) Financial Returns due to Reduced Input Costs and Sustained or Incrrased Crop Yields. Each year as the Soil Health Improves... less and less Foliar Spraying of Micronutrients is required as the Soil becomes SELF SUFFICIENT at providing all the nutrients plants need without substantial annual inputs. Peak Optimization of Crop Yields can benefit from targeted inputs (above what nature naturally provides).... but that becomes a financial decision... not a decision needed by necessity to keep crops alive and productive.
Gabe Brown's book Dirt To Soil explains 5 of the soil health principles. He does not explain context in the book. He does online in more recent videos. Allen Williams, Ray Archuleta, Jim Gerrish, Alejandro Carrillo, and others explain many of the regen techniques, too.
I completely agree with this. I've noticed some small improvements using cover crops in more large-scale ag fields. Still, they till the Earth before planting, and undo any benefits those cover crops previously offered. This is why I have turned my property into a food forest using the methods outlined by DavidTheGood. I'm sure many here are already acquainted with his channel.
I've just found this channel and watched a couple of the videos and got some great info. I'm a one acre perma wannabe. My little garden is on a hhot humid very tropical rock of an island, underneath the soil which composes easily is coral, not Hawaii. Curious what you think of the "back to eden" garden (wood chips, no watering, also creator-morphic? Eden farm is on the other side of the mountains from you in Puget Sound somewhere I think.
That top soil that is blowing in the wind has to come down somewhere. If we create our property with permiculture in mind that soil will be caught on our land. 😊 although what is in that soil.????? 🤷♀️

foliar feeding of any and all plants with nutrients is key to rapid repair of damaged environments.
You are so great! I dont often comment on your channel, but I just did a loop through Wash. St. Much love from Kelowna BC

Great video! Thanks for sharing!
