The OG Tower of Latria is what hooked me into FromSoftware. The remake's Latria is fun and looks great, but like the rest of the game, they missed big on the atmosphere. Heck, Fromsoft, themselves couldn't quite get it back when they tried with Irithyll Dungeons...though, it's amazing, on it's own
The remake is absolutely stunning, one of the best games of its generation still, but its visuals are too busy and consequently a lot of atmosphere is lost. It doesn't feel weird and dreamlike, like the original does.
@@BenPlaysGames I personally don't think the atmosphere was lost, I think we have just already experienced it and went into the remake with a different perspective from how we all did originally.
And what an absolutely fantastic game it was too. I remain amazed that the only way to play it is on PlayStation at 1080p/60. Whenever it gets a re-release or similar, if that ever happens, I'll definitely dive in and write a few bits and bobs about it.
@@BenPlaysGames you mean 30? Or are you running a jailbroken ps? Maybe you're emulating on pc - havent watched the vid yet heheh. 30 max too, for sure not consistent. I'd pay a full $60 for 60fps versions of both OG Demons Souls & Bloodborne running on PS5. Its wild all the crap they've repackaged over & over but these two classics remain trapped in time
Ah man I'm so glad you're getting into From Software stuff. Dark Souls became my favorite game ever back in the days. I was a huge Halo guy, but Dark Souls changed my life. looking forward for more !
Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are both absurdly good. Along with Bloodborne, they're the best games From Soft has produced. Demon's Souls is my personal favourite, there's just something so bleak and lonely about it.
I was currently replaying the game on ps3 making a fresh character with pure black tendency "using the archstones server to set everything to pure black in all worlds" and no weapon upgrading and i literally just killed the idol only for RUclips to recommend me this and i cant stress how insane the red phantom mind flayers are... If you havent been in latria with pure black you should try it they straight up one shot which makes it insanely horrifying
@@dragonslayer3552 no, rather that you can't get help if your stuk in pure black or the fact that is difficult to progress in this level. I got killed there so many times just by the mindflares alone. Welp atleast it wasn't ball torturing then the swamp.
Really great analysis! I started playing Demon’s Souls this spring, and while I haven’t made it that far, I am looking forward to going back and finishing the game. This level seems like a fantastic addition to the game, and I’ll be on the lookout for all of the small details you pointed out in this video.
Nice one, Joe! You're in for a treat mate - it's a little mechanically simplistic in places compared to From's newer games, but it has bucketloads of personality.
I spent so much time getting absolutely destroyed by the flayers back in the day. Of course, once you realise they basically always do the knock back then the stun over and over again they're easy, but man alive did it take me ages to realise that!
I'm not sure if there will be many, if any, more individual video like this, but I'm seriously considering creating one long piece from beginning to end. Having played it through twice over the last week, there's just so much to talk about!
Excellent video. I especially want to applaud you for making an interesting, informative and well-paced 15-minute video that is well-narrated WITHOUT the use of the grating speech pattern known as upspeak. You have no idea how much it means to me. 👍
Demon's Souls in probably my favourite From Software game honestly and I've generally enjoyed their newer releases (especially Elden Ring) a lot less than Demon's and Dark Souls especially. Bloodborne slaps too.
@@BenPlaysGames Yeah Elden Ring failed to grab me like the others did. Sekiro remains my personal favourite, though I haven't had the chance to try Bloodborne due to a lack of Playstation console
DeSR, removed the bugs buzzing, the noble wife sings the old ones lullaby, yes we dont want the modern audience to feel discomfort. Also des's fool's idol looked divine, like she really could be the salvation for the tortured prisoners, while desr's looked insane with her crazy eyes. Same with fat ministers, des looked like they revel in torturing and doing the r word, while desr's looks like theyre the victims of circumstances. Naw, DeSR's art direction looked like final fantasy
I have a love/ hate relationship with Prison of Hope. I love it for its Lovecraftian theme, setting, and atmosphere. I hate it because of its labyrinthine design and those bloody mindflayers. But hey, all the best games have at least one level that players hate and love simultaneously
I played the entire soul series from the very beginning and can without a shadow of a doubt tell you it was one of the best fucking games ever. I absolutely loved the original demons souls, as well as the remake.
Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne are three of my absolute favourite games of all time. Demon's Souls is an interesting one too, as it's obviously less mechanically robust than later From Software games, but at the same time quite possibly has the best atmosphere out of all them. It's so wonderfully dreamlike and lonely in a way no other Souls game is.
I enjoyed this. I'd love to see you revisit other FromSoft titles, and tell us what you thought were the scariest levels in them. DLC included as bonus content!
I'm glad they changed the music to Return to Slumber in the remake because the Tower of Latria is too scary and as a member of the modern audience I really needed a lullaby to calm me down so I can finish the level.
Good journalistic instincts here. Appreciate the use of examples over opinion and conjecture, as well as a clear script rather than endless waffle. Keep it up.
Literally the first time watching your vids and subscribed half way through. But I gotta disagree with you when you said they couldnt replicate the atmosphere in any other title. IMO they definitely did with bloodborne and far surpassed it. Not to take away from demons souls Latria. Its still awesome
Which version is better is completely based on which you play first. I played the remake first and it was the most terrifying and sad level I have ever experienced. Then I played the OG two days back and felt nothing. And I have heard many arguments about the opposite.
@@BenPlaysGames lol defenitly, especially the first time, when you have absoloutly no idea what is making these breathing sounds when they are all fucking skeletons
Cheers mate! The remake is a gorgeous game - in fact, it remains one of the most graphically impressive PlayStation 5 titles - but the visuals are very busy and I think the starkness of the original fits the dreamlike atmosphere and bleak tone far better. The remake is beautiful, but the original evokes much stronger feelings of melancholy for me.
I 100% thought this was gunna be about some Bloodborne shit like YaharG'ul or some shit like the hypogean jail. But nope. Now I am reminded of some of the scariest shit in all of from's repertoire. Sorry if this seems mean, but this video really doesn't deliver IMO. Or the video title was a huge disservice. I was expecting a major emphasis on why the level was scary, but I feel like you only spend a minute or two convincing us. Most of this video feels like explaining random moments of gameplay and they don't reinforce the theme of scary. It feels like a bunch of average well-designed FromSoft encounters but not any scarier than average. --- I love your prior videos. Halo is amazing and From Software is pretty good, but I hope your can maintain your video quality >_>
It's all good mate, I appreciate the feedback regardless and sorry you didn't enjoy it - can't win em all, right! Edit: Having watched this again a couple of days removed from the making of it, I'm not sure I necessarily agree. In order, the video talks about the unsettling sound design, the rarity of mind flayers making them particularly creepy, the disturbing moral choice with the prisoners, the survival horror layout and horrid sense of place, traps and how to avoid them, and finally the bleak story. Some of those may not be considered overtly scary things by some, but I think throughout there's a focus on horror and often on what Latria does differently compared to the rest of Demon's Souls.
I have a feeling he has never played bloodbourne. How can you compare? Every inch of bloodbourne's dna is like a horror movie. Demon souls was the OG from Mizaki, but bloodborne was the official horror/nightmare game. That scared you almost from the beginning too the end.
