The Los Angeles Lakers try to accomplish something that had not been done in the NBA for 20 years: win back to back championships.
A few days earlier The Detroit Pistons had the series lead 3-2. After the Lakers won a tough Game 6, it all comes down to this.
Nothing reminds me of my childhood more than the opening music for CBS!!! My life was so easy back then!
showtime was a great era. Thank you Magic, Kareen and Big Game James and the rest of the crew for giving us such great memories of a better time
With 2 seconds left the officials should have called a time out to clear the court. You had Laker bench players on the court. Could have been a Technical foul.

Rigged as hell. Everybody was ok with Lakers winning no matter what. Detroit deserved that title. Even with 15 points ahead one can feel how they got into the game in no time and froze the crowd. The fans felt it. Vinnie Johnson should have made it into the game earlier in the second as Isiah was a burden in the second half due to the injury.
The glory days of the NBA. Grown men basketball. The 80s, best decade ever, by far.

Teams win championships in the NBA, not players. Individuals no matter how great can't carry their teams to titles without significant contributions/stepping up from the team's auxiliary players. Doesn't mean they are any less great. If you think "nobody cares" then you don't care about basketball.

Sunday afternoon basketball literally brought tears of joy to my eyes.... I wore #42 in highschool because as far as skills he is Worthy to be praised.... I still wanna dunk on somebody Mama even at 48yrs old.

This crown was very sweet for our Lakers...all through the playoffs...every opponent taking our Lakers to the limit.
Especially the Pistons...good on you "Bad Boys" you had a great team and were as tough as an opponent could be.

A year before, the Lakers were the dominators. The 88 NBA Playoffs, their backs were against the wall as much as they had ever been (ala 1984) and then found a way to overcome and win. I get more satisfaction watching people overcome obstacles to win more than always dominating.
I was a Mavericks fan back then and they took the Lakers to the limit of the Western Conference Finals but collapsed in the second half of Game 7. The Mavs had no defense. Roy Tarpley was probably the best player when on the floor when he was out there.
Shit you Lakers always had a freaking CAKEWALK through the Western Conference bracket. Breeze through the weak ass western conf opponents every year then have all that extra time to rest and recover while Boston, Detroit, Philly beat the hell outta one another and were usually pretty well spent by the time they made the finals.
Even the Hawks, Knicks and Bucks were tougher than the Kings, Clippers, Suns, Nuggets, Jazz, Warriors, Sonics.
The Blazers and Rockets were decent but nowhere near the Celtics, Pistons, 76ers through the 80s.
LA doesn’t win 5🏆 if they were in the East. Maybe 2.
Pistons had to go through Celtics and Lakers in their prime to get a championship. Did Jordan? In 91, the Pistons were done, the Celtics were done and so were the Lakers. Not to mention the league had changed. Defense was taken out for King Michael to run the game.The 80's were the last best era of the NBA. Today's NBA is just a hollow shell.

There is still 2 seconds and Lakers bench were already on the court starting to celebrate. There was an obvious foul against Isiah when he received the inbound play from laimbeer. If these 2 scenarios were taken up, it could have gone into overtime and the outcome of the game would probably be different. Just 2 cents observations

@@WoodiesHoodies where was it fabricated? did you watch the last 2 seconds how the lakers bench, the camera men, other spectators stepped onto the court? there was 2 seconds still left and Laimbeer was inbounding a fast break ball to Thomas. Watch the game again so you will know. As I have said this could have been a different ballgame, if the game went overtime. This was just my observation.

I couldn't get enough of these CBS broadcasts, they were perfect. And the intensity of this era was unmatched! These were grown men doing battle. You play the Pistons, better put your big boy pants on.
Isiah Thomas (pre-injury) was the best player in that series. Magic did have the best reg. season. But Thomas caught fire in the playoffs.

My first ever NBA game in person. Flew in from Vegas after winning a bunch playing blackjack. Nobody was selling tickets and I started to leave when a guy had one nosebleed for $250. It was well worth it. Still recall Laimbeer missing with 1:11 left that would've given Detroit the lead.

I forgot about Dantley. Even though he and Thomas didn't like each other, i love how, on the very first Pistons possession, Isiah gave it straight to Dantley for an inside score.
God I loved it when fans used to storm the court like that. It was exciting to see. Big games James absolutely shined.

Magic's injury the following Finals had a much bigger impact. But I agree a healthy Isiah in Games 6 and 7 could have made all the difference in who won the title. This has to be one of the closest NBA Finals ever contested.

It shouldn't have even gone to game 7 after Isiahs amazing heroic performance in game 6 and the refs decided to call a bullshit foul..that never happened to put Kareem on the foul line..and rob detroit of a a clear victory and potential (start of a 3peat) That is the history of the Laker and Celtics organization in close games in the playoffs ..Remember what they did to Chris Webber and Mike Bibby in Sacramento

The Piston were the 'bad boys', but they were 'tough minded' and refused to quite. They were also deep and talent-rich. Even when Isiah came out, they would bring in Vinnie Johnson, who was clutch and instant offence. And Rodman would come in for Dantley. That's some serious talent - a Hall of Famer (Rodman) coming in for a Hall of Famer (Dantley). If the Pistons had won this series, they actually would have 3-peated and been remembered more as a dynasty, rather then a transitionary team between the Celtic-Laker era and the Bulls Dynasty. It's understandable why they had the Bulls # for awhile and it was so tough for the Bulls and Jordan to get past them. The Bulls beat a true championship team in the Pistons to go on to their dynasty-era.

That Piston team with a healthy Thomas was just one of the teams the Celtics had to go through to get to the finals. Lakers got to play Eastern teams that had to go through absolute gauntlets while themselves costing through the weak Western.
Nba today would be better to watch if they combined the toughness, and rules of 80's era and athleticism of today's nba.
Unbelievable. Cameramen and Lakers players are ON the court with 2 seconds on the clock. Magic fouls Isiah with 1 second on the clock. NO CALLS. I’m a Piston fan and was living in
LA at the time and remember that vividly. Shoulda, woulda, coulda but the Pistons got robbed. Add to that the “phantom call” on Laimbeer in game 6. Amazing that the announcers didn’t even mention any of that. Different time, different game. SO glad the Pistons won the next two years. They rarely get any accolades for all they did. Ridiculous. Everbybody wanted the Lakers to win except the Pistons and their fans period.

That being said the people on the court with time on the clock was more than enough reason to stop the game and give the Pistons a chance. I don’t have a crystal ball so I wouldn’t profess to knowing if any Piston could have tied it. Personally I think Laimbeer had position. Being the most hated guy on the NBA won’t give you much slack with the refs. The Pistons got the Lakers the next year and in the 5 game “sweep” in 2003-4. Signed, unapologetically a Piston fan.
Carushow Once again we agree to disagree. As close as the Pistons came to beating the Lakers in 7 the previous year I would venture to say that nothing would’ve stopped them in 89. Not a healthy Magic, not a healthy Byron Scott. It probably would’ve gone 7.Of course we’ll never know will we? The Pistons repeated the following year and beat a very good Portland team in 5. The Pistons were a great team and rarely get the respect they deserve outside of Detroit.

I just hope that everyone that just watched this can really understand why we love being a Pistons fan for three straight seasons we had to beat magic bird and Michael Jordan and sometimes Patrick Ewing in the Knicks just to get through the playoffs all three of the Pistons championship seasons that we won championships in were hard and we played our hearts out defense first we should have one that game seven

This game is one year older than me.
Ratings are over-rated. If Worthy gets a great finger roll or Kareem makes a routine hook shot, Magic's rating goes up. You switch Magic and Isiah and who steps up for the Pistons? Meanwhile Thomas would dominate even more because he'd have inside weapons finally.

As good a defensive team as the pistons we're, the fast break and speed of the lakers was unstoppable!

They were fortunate that Isiah was not at full strength in the second half of Game 7.

This championship was definitely a gift to Kareem the game 6 phantom call then them on the court with tine still on the clock!!
I remember this was SUCH A BIG DEAL in 1988 as it was the first repeat champion in the NBA in nearly 20 years. Now repeats or threepeats are not uncommon and young fans have gotten jaded about it. But the Lakers ascended to the status of LEGENDS when they actually achieved the repeat guarantee which coach Pat Riley promised after they won the 1987 championship.
Magic was on his way to the Finals MVP award but James Worthy had a monster game here. I think he also topscored for the Lakers in every game they won in this series (Games 2. 4, 6 and 7).
Kareem only scored 4 points here (although he won Game 6 on 2 FTs off a phantom foul by Laimbeer), and there was speculation that he would announce his retirement after the game and retire as a champion. But no he did not, and he had to come back for a really bad final season in 1988-89.
I cant remember ever seeing worthy miss a shot or make a bad move.
