About the therapy session, I also got very similar advice from my own therapist. When I was still a student, I often felt that taking time to prepare and eat meals and complete house chores as taking time away from studying and "being productive". And she told me that "it sounds like you think taking care of yourself is a waste of time", so yeah I've also worked on that.
Also, I relate so much to the whole not devoting everything to content creation because it really strips away the fun of doing things. There are some activities games that I keep to just my personal time and other stuff for my streaming time and it's helped a lot.
Edit: On personality quizzes, I actually love taking them for my OC's because it helps me put my personality concept for my OC's into digestible words. I do like taking MBTI quizzes for myself, BUT it is easy to put oneself into a box and put too much stock into personality quiz results. At the end of the day, MBTI and other things are not that different from star signs and horoscopes and should be taken with a big ol' grain of salt.

I’m currently my group’s forever DM, but I have many, many character concepts in my head. The two I’m currently most interested in playing-and thus the two I’m most likely to do the challenge for-are Songbird, a reborn College of swords bard; and Delphine, a dragonborn Pact of the Fiend warlock. I’d infodump about them, but I’m pretty sure nobody wants to scroll through all of it.

It's always lovely to get Crispy updates, love hearing them! It can be so helpful to hear others are struggling but working on it, hearing their strategies to work on things, etc. I like your view on things. And it is just nice to hear how you are doing.
If people don't like it they can use the chapters to skip forward really.
And props to your therapist, she sounds awesome! And gotta thank her for Tavern Adjacent existing, its a great one!

I did Ginny's character challenge. Had so much fun making the backstory playlist that I listen to it a couple of times the day before each session. Since my character is a cowboy-flavored gunslinger, there’s a couple of bluegrass covers and southern gothic songs. I really love The Barefoot Movement's cover of Don't Fear The Reaper, it has this gorgeously haunting fiddle solo in lieu of the electric guitar.
ETA: mad props to your therapist, she sounds like a mental health keeper.

Heh, with my current DnD character I started on my own having him write letters to his npc friend about his travels as a more interesting way for me to keep track of events in a more dynamic manner and get in his headspace. It's pretty fun exploring how he expresses himself through writing. After defeating the BBEG and earning a lot of money he got a journal. I thought on and off about him attempting to write and epic poem about the events, thinking it was probably too much for me to try to get right, but then one night I sat down to a word doc and he indeed attempted and epic and it was very amusing and not at all well written. At the end he got annoyed with it and scribbled on the page, then drew some pictures of the events. Very simplistic. And this was all me writing and doodling in my sketchbook, then posting for the others to read between sessions. I enjoy being in his headspace as he has so much to express and such child-like wonder and constant good humor masking his inner trauma that he's trying to cope with.

I might actually try that challenge with my character that I’m writing about in my novel. She’s a tiefling in a home brew world. Her origin is quite similar to DC’s Raven, though I’m my world tieflings are born from a union between a mortal and a demon lord (there are 7 each of them impersonating one of the deadly sins) and her father embodies wrath. Every tiefling has a specific gift that correlates with their parental traits, hers being able to change and manipulate fire just by being near it which she will learn to control fire completely but in the beginning of my novel she just changes the color and temperature of fire just by being near it. Her personality is being naturally curious and adventurous leading to her being trained by the former guard captain in the fundamentals of swordsmanship even though she works as a blacksmith along with her mother.

Funny thing, Crispy, I listen to your videos often when I have to do boring chores and it makes it much more enjoyable. I also have the opposite problem, I spend too little time working on my channel and often just choose to play games instead. I have huge lists of ideas for my channel that I never do, plan or implement. I have even stopped streaming my Overwatch games and even trying to make interesting content for that part. I have trimmed down my main channel to just my weekly D&D actual play and not much else. I need to stop procrastinating and put in some time on a weekly basis to expand my content and figuring out how to promote and expand my reach. My channel is stuck at

  • @ArcCaravan

The character challenge sounds cool. I've actually done some of those to get an idea of how my characters look or what their motifs would be. Might try the rest, particularly the letter to get an idea of how they'd talk to someone beyond speaking my thoughts in their voice.
One thing that helps me is figuring out a character's go-to expressions. I usually got to a list of emotions and pick specific variants of them to prioritize, like "alertness" or "tension" instead of fear and "frustration" or "confusion" for sadness. Shows how they uniquely respond to things.
I also tend to keep track of inspirations while figuring out at least five differences my character has, preferably related to how they inspired me. Gives a good idea of how they'd be without just being an obvious rip-off.

Much love to your therapist! Your project of an unpublished 5e revision reminds me of an art project that was given to me once. My obsession with the quality of my final product had been so overwhelming that I was no longer enjoying the process. I was told to draw a picture and then burn it. This was repeated about 10 times. Since these pieces were never going to survive, I started being less meticulous and more focused on the pleasure of the process. I still draw burn pieces to this day.
Have fun making your 5e revision!

I really hope I've never made weird parasocial comments that have weirded you out! I usually agree with your takes or have some alternative ideas that I enjoy bringing up. I think there was only like one video in which I was critical of something you said, and I tried to be constructive about it; hopefully I succeeded. You're good people, Crispy, and I always enjoy listening to your thoughts, even when they don't line up perfectly with mine.
And if someone did make a callout post about your channel, I think ultimately you'd just get more followers as people check you out and realize you're just genuinely really creative and nice. Don't worry!

About the character playlists I’m the same way I can not make them but my friend group loves them. And sometimes songs make me think of my characters a lot of the time they make me put myself in a fantasy setting (because real life sucks) but OST just yes! And the reason why I think they make you think of dnd is that some OSTs go hard and it’s just so easy to get pumped for the killing blow when that crescendo happens and it all comes crashing down. Also a lot of medieval music is instrumental so it puts you in the mindset of a medieval world or at least I think it does.

one of my DMs does these "Inspiration Questions" at the beginning of each session that reminds me a little of this challenge. It's always a question about our characters like, "What does your character fear?" or "What is your character's favorite food?" and sometimes it's a question I haven't thought of that helps me develop the character better which is great 😺

Loved this episode. I love seeing how other people create and get into character. I think I'll have to try this character challenge. I've got a 5e tabaxi druid that I've been playing for several months, but I just can't seem to get a handle on him. When I created him, I forgot to take nature as a skill. So I have what my husband jokingly calls a "city druid", but that does seem to be what he is. I joined the game to help out a friend who's the GM and she had three players and they were just having a rough time of it. They're doing Tyranny of Dragons and they were at the very beginning, two paladins and an artificer. So the GM suggested I do a Circle of the Moon druid as a character that would be helpful. Now, I usually play bards and an outlier of a berserker barbarian, so I said, sure, I'll try a druid. I'm not really enjoying the class, so I think that's probably part of the problem. So I think this challenge could help me a lot to really help flesh out this character.

    regarding character socials:
In cyberpunk campaign some years ago Ive made social media posts (offline, just fake screen of posts) for my character.
    like:
asking people what cybernetics he should install.
I was planning to run adventure, and make post for him, and party gets notification during tense scene, something along the lines:
"Beach, Sun, Drinks, wonderful weather, whats U l00zeeers up 2??"
With pic of tropical beach attached :PP
Campaign ended sadly ended up as horror story.

Character Playlist is a hard thing for me too.
I like fleshing out my characters, they tend to have a mind of their own and it definitely is a process so I like to try new ideas to give them more depth. And when I startet playing The Dark Eye with some friends (GM was a horror story of her own) some friends started talking about character playlists. The idea to me did sound alright but also rather strange. A good friend does one for every character she makes and loves it.
For me, it is really situational. Like, Jibrail is a bit of a playboy but it is the result of his upbringing which led to him thinking he can't have love. He believes he brings misfortune to those he loves and that he doesn't deserve love. His backstory is pretty fleshed out and there are loads of songs about conflicting feelings and self-doubt and such. So I had an easier time finding songs that resonate with my idea of him.
Carisia (my Dark Eye character) had a list of love songs when she fell for our party's equivalent to rogue but I found it rather hard to really put down a good playlist for her. It's not that I didn't have a backstory for her, she came quite easily to me. But it just didn't feel right to reduce her to some songs.
Sometimes songs inspire me and become a base for a new character but doing a whole playlist is not for every player and not for every character either, I think. I love my characters and sometimes I first have to get a feel for them before I can flesh out their backstory but the process is different for every character.

    • @ArcCaravan

Definitely true how it isn't for everyone. Best I can think of is different songs for different facets, but that can either only go so far or make the problem worse.
