Interesting take from "big business" - income over the law. Written in 40s/50s, very similar today with Covid-19: some businesses can stay open like liquor and bars, while the neighborhood little guy can't, or houses of worship.
First occurence of William Conrad's iconic opening tag: "I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshall. The first man they look for and the last they want to meet. It's a chancey job, and it makes a man watchful. And a little… lonely."
Many celebrities were compensated to say that in L&M's magazine and radio ads in 1954- including Fredric March, Barbara Stanwyck, Rosalind Russell and Bennett Cerf. This was Patricia Morison's endorsement: www.jumpingfrog.com/images/ads-celebrity/54end028.jpg
L&M was Liggett & Myers' entry in the filter cigarette "sweepstakes" (introduced in late 1953). It sold well enough for other tobacco manufacturers to bring theirs to the market as quickly as possible. R.J. Reynolds made a big splash with Winston in late '54, around the same time American Tobacco introduced filter-tipped {Herbert} Tareyton. And so on.
Originally broadcast on July 12, 1954.
Is one of the best yet
thanks!
