I also wanted to add , before I'd tear that head off , I put a water system on that engine and run it a while, especially if it was sitting for awhile, I'm a retired Chevrolet mechanic and it could be a valve sticking a little. Good luck and keep up the great work ❤❤

Just now getting to see this episode. Love the 55 project and really enjoyed this. I would like to point out a few of things that I noticed: 1. If you look at the distributor drive gear on the one you pulled out, it looked like a bronze gear. I couldn't tell if the one you installed had a steel or iron gear. If it is iron, take it out and replace it with one recommended by Summit. The roller cams are steel and can eat that distributor gear or cam gear up really quickly. This actually applies to all roller cams and distributor gear combinations, not just BBC 2. It appeared that y'all have a rectangular port intake and the stock heads are oval port. Maybe the gasket mismatch you noticed. The mismatch will likely cause power and tuning issues. That can be solved if you decide to get some aluminum heads just order the rectangular ports. One thing to consider when buying heads is that the Marine engines are very low compression. They had one on Engine Masters and the guys said it was around 8:1 so you would want to consider that when sizing combustion chambers and if you replace the cam. Good luck and I can not wait until the next 55 episode.

an idea for 1st start up for any engine that you guys may already know but just in case you dont know, before you put the distributor in the engine, install the oil filter and put the oil in the engine then get a high torque/power drill with a distributor shaft and put it down the distributor hole and prime the motor of oil then install the distributor and temporary fuel system and start the engine

Okay guys, you absolutely right about boat motors.... the engine operation temp is usually 160° or lower. Oil does not get hot enough to bake the additives in oil to cause the crusties, or tge carbon build up. Now to keep engine clean, you will need to run a good synthetic oil to keep it that way. If no on the oil, run the 160° thermostat to keep it clean..... UNSOLICITED ADVICE FROM OLD BOAT MECHANIC!!!

Before adding anthing additional, making the headers harder to take off, you might want to consider getting rid of that silicone. I can't tell you how many exhaust leaks I've had to fix due to people either trying to use it as an exhaust gasket, or putting in on exhaust gaskets. I've never seen any of the "high temp" silicone hold up to the temps, even the old stuff that was infused with copper. All of it burns up, cracks and degrades usually within 100 hours of run time causing exhaust leaks. Just something to think about from a 30 year mech.

Most marine engines run a cam that allows the engine to run high rpm for a long time. A automotive engine runs a cam to go between 0-3000 rpm multiple times during one drive

    • @69castellano
      @69castellano Месяц назад

I knew someone would say it. That my knowledge of a boat engine is the cam is the only thing different. As brianwills2532 said, to run high RPM for a long time. Typically these are called "RV" cams. Like something you'd find in a big RV going down the road. People use RV cams for the street. Do a little research on them to find out where they make their power in the RPM range and see if it's a good fit for the 57 project.

Then dropping the boat engine into the Camper with a new 4L80. Some where in your shop is GTRoxy's old heart. She woulda fit without an adapter kit. LS engines still have the front engine mount holes the SBC had to mount in the 55 originally

Yeah, just the torque of a big block alone will rip those dated mounts in a few launches. Chevrolet had a recall on them back when they used to be factory. You basically got a cable strap that went from the exhaust to the left front A-arm. Most people put a chain on to keep them from breaking.

I don't know your plans for the car but most hot rodders I've know like to rev it out from time to time. If you two have that in mind I'd suggest a pair of oval port heads. They make great mild to medium build street heads that will let you pull 5500+ rpm when the itch hits. Keep up the good work.

That's an awesome engine. I did something similar back in the early 80's. I took a 283 Chevy engine that was packed away in 1957. It was a spare for a boat but was never needed. I bought it off the owner, stripped the marine gear off, put a bunch of Go-Fast goodies on it and put it in a 1975 Nova. It was a fuelie engine but I couldn't get my hands on the mechanical fuel injection stuff so ended up carbing it. Ran great.

With the marine cam this is going to be a fun daily. Idle to 5K it's a torque monster! I predict a cam change down the road.😁

For the boat engine, let's see...you need a GM so the drive components adapt, want good torque and reliability so you aren't having to work on something all the time. I know, a 292 straight 6!

My guess is the boat will get a large displacement LS or a diesel. I'll watch and see. Love this idea for the 57. Very cool! Be safe!

Junkyard-Digs also built a boat engine in his dad's F150 a few years ago. It's great that you are taking the time to complete this project, the engine sounds good.

Make sure that you have a melonized gear on your distributor with that roller cam in the big block, the regular gear will get eaten up it’s the hardened cam

Valve covers are on the wrong sides, the sheet metal towers are for plug wire looms. Great little build with the marine engine. Many people think marine engines are a completely different engine but they just have different accessories for fire prevention.

The reason why that motor is so clean is it because it is a boat motor boat motors don’t see dirt and dust and stuff like that they’re out in the middle of the water. What a boat motor blows up it blows up really clean.

I love your little dog. It makes me miss my little peanut. I had to put them down three days before my birthday so I get to get depressed three days before my birthday every year because he was suffering and I couldn’t stand to see him suffer anymore, so I had to put them to sleep, but yours is really really cute and it reminds me of him may ask how old he mine was going on 12.
