Hot off the heels of Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel's Black Panther just came out on digital download. I thought the character has a lot of potential, but to me this movie had one core problem which prevented it from reaching the level of quality it possibly could have... a problem I like to call the Superman dilemma.
I'll try to make more videos over the summer for you guys. Definitely about upcoming releases like Deadpool and Solo: A Star Wars Story. You can also tell me any ideas you'd want me to cover.

He takes a heartshaped herb that gives him superpowers, and as previously stated he defeats the antagonist at the conclusion of the movie with both suits disabled, having previously suffered mortal wounds, presumably making him physically less capable than the antagonist, despite his advanced healing so... I think the best way to approach overpowered characters is to make them vulnerable in other ways, risk of losing friends, family, social status, ect. Like with Dr. Manhattan. Or put them in situations that challenge their motives, like spiderman 2.

I disagree, the mere existence of the Superman dilemma is a trap that inevitably drains interest faster than watching grass grow. To write your character into this scenario is like taking a plane that can go anywhere (from a story perspective) and trading it in for a train that can only go back and forth on a track.
Take Superman for example, the only way his stories are any good is if someone has kryptonite, can destroy the world, or endanger his loved ones. Then they rinse, repeat, rinse repeat , rinse repeat again and again and again. Then at the point you have two options, keep raising the external stakes (collateral damage, world at risk ,etc.) or break the laws of the character you first put in motion. (Like they did in infinity war and end-game) but if you do either the audience is still not fully convinced ...it’s difficult for the audience to buy in once the laws have been established making them overpowered, you might be able to convince them eventually but it’s a trap that cuts your options down regardless... for example black panther will never have a high stakes battle without his suit. To have that be the case for your character is a problem.... or for Superman, the only way his battle is tense is if kryptonite is involved. It becomes way too constricted and boring.
Dr Manhattan was not a main character and was effectively separated from the main plot. Allowing tension to take place elsewhere. If they were to make more than one movie with Manhattan then his arc would be too much the same every time.
Spider-Man 2 has none of this dilemma however

@@ZEPR0FESS0RR The fact that Superman is so powerful helps to avoid another common pitfall in writers: thinking that a physical, violent threat can be the only source of conflict in a story.
I actually like Superman as a character because his pysical power forces the writers working with him to find more creative ways of challenging him. I remember one comic where Superman was wrestling with the thought that his prescence on Earth is somehow stunting humanity's growth, making them dependent on him for solving their problems. He is forced to confront this problem when he encounters a town full of farmers who are too scared to confront their brutal taskmaster, but are more than content to let Superman show up to potentially arrest him. In this situation Superman is faced with two bad options: stop the taskmaster and further fuel the farmers' apathy, or leave them alone to forever suffer under the taskmaster's whip. In other words, he has to save somebody while also finding a way of teaching them to not wait around for someone to save them. Its a paradox that makes for a wonderfully conflict ridden story!
Supermans relationship with Lois Lane has also made for some great stories. Before Superman revealed his secret identity to her he had a big problem where she loves Superman, but he can only be with her as Clark Kent since that is who he really is and because he wants her to love him for that rather than for being a big buff super hero. You can't just punch your way to someones heart! (Well, you can, but not if you want to marry them).
Last among my favorite stories featuring Superman is called 'the man who has everything.' It features a big bad monster that can kill earth like many other Superman stories. What I found interesting about it is that it features a parasite that can trigger a hallucination that grants a person their heart's greatest desires. In Superman's case, this caused him to dream that he was alive on an un-exploded Krypton. There was conflict in the form of the dream being everything that his heart could desire, but at the same time he also knew deep down that he needed to find the emotional strength to leave it in order to wake up in the real world and beat the badguy. He later equated waking up from the dream to "ripping my own arm off." You might argue that its unrealistic for a parasite to have any such effect on him, but we live in a world where microscopic organisms can kill beasts as big as humans so I wouldn't bet against nature's ability to find creatures that can challenge any living organism, even a kryptonian one.
There are pysical conflicts, social conflicts, and internal conflicts. Crafting great Superman stories, or just any story really, is about recognizing the different ways that you can test your main character and balancing them properly. Even non-powered characters like Batman or Spiderman would be really boring if all of their problems were external or physical threats. In the latter case, everything exciting about that character stems from the juggling act between his life as a Peter and his life as Spiderman, which is a distinctly non-combat based conflict.

      @jasonberryman1035 3 года назад +3

@KAI PHAN I think another problem was none of the threats he faces asides from Kilmonger are actually a real threat. A character being powerful isn’t bad in of itself, for example most people would agree someone like Thor, Dr. Strange and Wanda are stronger than BP and there are many other superheroes ranging from Spiderman to Aquaman who have similar levels of durability and strength to him however the difference is all of the characters I just stated face serious stakes and threats appropriate to their own strength throughout their respective movies. That’s why both a Batman film and a Thor film could have equal stakes and dangers to the protagonists despite the significant power gap between Batman and Thor.

The point isn’t that Black Panther is too strong of a character compared to his allies, (aka Thor, Hulk, etc.) it’s that he has no enemy capable of really damaging him in the movies he shows up in. Thor still gets beat up, the Hulk still gets thrown around and hurt, Iron Man constantly has his armor destroyed and is injured. It isn’t a matter of being too strong, it’s a mater of being too strong compared to their established threats.

Everything is linked to vibranium - so if Wakanda never had a resource that accidentally dropped in their laps, they would have been unable to exist. Wakandans have been totally isolationist (apart from warriors and spies going to the outside world). So exactly how and where was all this "super-science and super-knowledge" created? Did the vibranium whisper it into their ears? Telepathic contact with super-sciency aliens? Centuries of scientific experimentation? The movie was very vague on the particulars of this "utopia". (not trying to be a wise-ass, just pointing out some plot holes that was really necessary to have included in order to make it seem realistic in how it become what it did). Also having access to advanced technologies doesn't make you smart, it just means you've got better tools to learn on - accelerated learning is a natural byproduct of that. Being smart and having a lot of knowledge is two very different things. She froze up when she was introduced to 2 set of problems at the same time, which shows that despite what she knows, she still needs experience in how to handle certain problems, especially in situations she hasn't faced before. @@animeking830 Yes it does, from what I remember of the movie Carol is very overpowered and can do nothing wrong, the only thing holding her back are men who are mean to her. But the movie also has storytelling issues with pacing and general tone, like fury being the comic relief when his character was set up in multiple installments as a very serious person not to be messed with (don’t get me started on the eyepatch backstory screw up) and the very heavy handed obvious political allegories about immigrants (the aliens being the immigrants) it just comes of as not well thought out and inappropriately sided instead of a neutral depiction of a heavy topic like a good movie would. It alienates the audience, talks down to them.
But to me the worst flaw the movie had is that it was incredibly boring and had absolutely no fun superhero movie antics at all, I went to see it with some friends and we were really exited ready to give it the best possible chance and it just sucked we almost fell asleep, luckily Shazam was also showing that night and we snuck in right after. Well, kinda true, but with the Superman dilemma, it's extremely easy to slide into the little brother argument, like "I'm invincible to anything in the world!" - "And I have bullets from another world that pierce everything!" - "And I have a psychic shield that stops all bullets from all worlds mid-air!" - "And I have the ability to turn off all psychic shields!" - "And I...", which is a huge problem for superhero plots, since they've already established the character's powers they have to invent stupid reasons why they don't work. Or the other way around, find dumber and dumber ways to make their power work in a challenging environment. It's called "plot armour" or something of the sort. It's better to create a character with no real OP superpowers, just powerful enough to compete with other characters, and always with some weaknesses. The "Superman isn't invincible to a special green glowing rock from outer space" shit isn't that impressive IMHO. And thus, basically all the showdowns between superheroes resort to that little brother argument of whose power works better and whose doesn't. To make it interesting, you really need to be creative. That's why kryptonite is stupid, because green isn't a creative colour. MARVEL has the OP problem with basically any character, with some plot devices they can defeat anyone and everyone. Like, for example, Quicksilver. He's so fast he can kill everyone before we even blink. So, to make him not OPAF, the writers have to make every villain be able to react as fast, or disable him somehow. I honestly feel like the superhero lineups of MARVEL and DC are just competitions on "who can make a cooler OP ability" that have turned into just stacking new OP shit on top of each other. Like stoneless Thanos, he's stronger than the Hulk, no one can basically hurt him, and so on. With stones that literally give him abilities to bend reality to his will, go anywhere, pull down a fucking moon, reverse time, control minds, and do whatever the Soul stone can, he's like a 6-time OP champion, so in order to beat him, Thor gets a new toy, and it somehow can push through all Anus' defences. See my point? Let's put it this way: how does Thanos with the green stone even get hit? How does Thanos with the red stone or Loki with his clone power ever get hit? Can't he calmly stand somewhere, while everyone think he's in another place and try to hit the clone? How can Spider-Man get hit physically, if he has slo-mo reflexes and literally the power to predict the future? See my point? That quickly turns into basically a pp measuring contest, and only a good writer can make it look reasonable and justified

I didnt see blacks versus whites... I also think you are wrong in the point about Age of Ultron; Ultron doesn't want a proxy race war, in the sense that he is not making arguments about robot superiority, he simply thinks humans are the cause of all their own problems and wants to 'save them' by wiping them out. Joker as a physical threat is highly inconsistent from interpretation to interpretation, as it seems no one has really been able to come to an agreement on what he is physically capable of. In some interpretations such as in Endgame he's actually a highly capable fighter who fights in a highly chaotic and informal, but remarkably quick manner, that is uniquely unlike those of other characters. It comes off as the fighting style of someone who has exceptionally fast reflexes and a wealth of fighting experience, but never actually received or listened to lessons on any formal techniques. I personally prefer this interpretation better as it seems consistent with his slender frame and overall chaotic nature, and gives him a stronger presence when in the same room as Batman.

In a Game if you are invulnerable you take out the joy of the game... just like having a character like this one (or Captain Marvel)
if you think about it as a Video Game, for example in the case of Captain Marvel, you could fix the character by simply giving her stamina and each time she uses her powers, she gets tired, and has to rest for a while.... instead of being able to shoot lasers all she wants... that will make her actions more strategic and you know that if she uses it a lot she will be vulnerable again.

He can use repulsors, but only if it is powered by the ARC reactor. The ARC reactor also seems to be like a battery - it needs to be changed from time to time. THAT'S the Black Panther. No ands, ifs or buts about it. However, they then try to scale it back and give him an origin story and show him becoming the Black Panther. That was a poor move. Tell me one enemy in all of Black Panther that actually was able to harm him in his suit. Hell, not even Killmonger could do it.
All in all Black Panther was a good movie and with the „no tech involved“ battle and the mirror battle they were able to work around this issue for most parts. But it is definitely an issue in the movie.
Captain Marvel is a bit similar, but more in line with Wonder Woman: right when the final battle starts, she becomes invincible. Not even a full hit by the Kree killteam can even harm her anymore. That is a disaster as it kills tension. Why? The movie was good before and none of her powers demand complete and utter invulnerability, so why was it necessary?

They do the same in Luke Cage and Superman and it doesn't really make the story more interesting or compelling.
The stakes in the movie we're mostly "Can he beat (insert opponent)?", but if the forces of antagonism targeted his flaws as a character, his family/friends, his standing as King, or his morality more that could solve the problem with tension or stakes and make a better movie. You mean like.... say.... antagonists who cause him to interrupt his love interest's special mission and inadvertently put her in danger because being royalty has made him selfish and bull-headed to the point where said love interest has a conversation where she explicitly says he needs to change? Or.... maybe... an antagonist who causes an internal conflict on how Wakanda should be ruled which divides his nation between those who support him and those who oppose? Or.... say.... an antagonist whose actions make him rethink everything he knows about both his father and his kingship? Or.... even.... an antagonist literally challenging his throne, and T'Challa bypassing both cultural ritual and conventional wisdom by rushing to accept the challenge? Part of what I struggled with was just a lack of context. I'm a white, non american, and when we hear about Killmonger's history, and what happened to him, hearing that he grew up in Oakland or whatever doesn't mean anything to me. I don't have an understanding of how awful or not awful this particular place is. All I see is a kid pissed off that his dad was killed, and that he was kept out of wakanda. And I could understand his rage at the people of wakanda, but that doesn't explain to me his hatred of western civilisation, which is what it seems like he's really focused on. Revenge on wakanda is an afterthought to him, what matters in his mind is destroying america, and the rest of the western world. And I don't have the context on how those things would be related.
I watched the wire recently, which funnily enough also stars Michael B. jordan, and in watching that I think it helped me to fill in the blanks and get an idea of what sort of environment he's supposed to have grown up in. But that's not made clear in the film, and unless you're aware of the context, killmonger's motivation just makes no sense whatsoever. Even then it feels like a stretch, but at least I have some clue what they were going for. Ultimately, if Killmonger had been focused more on destroying Wakanda, or his backstory had focused more on the evils done to him and others by white Americans, I would have gotten his character far more. In the film, we only see the bad things that happen to him done by the previous black panther. He kills his father, and abandons him. That's the conflict that's set up in the movie it's self, and it's just not focused on.
Other then that, his lines and direction just felt off at times. Micheal is a great actor, and I've loved him in plenty of other works, so I absolutely blame the director, not him. Just felt off. Black panther seems like a film with an identity crisis, torn between africa and america. And whilst that's likely pretty indicative of the real experiences of African Americans, it also makes the film feel disjointed and messy to me.

He's the son of African royalty that grew up in the ghetto around endless crime and poverty. Losing his father, and finding out about his true identity, but abandoned and left behind is his character. The movie establishes that. He may not have grown up in Wakanda but his father told him stories about it, left his journal about Wakanda, and taught him the language. He's connected and disconnected from he's father's homeland. He resents all those things, being left behind, growing in place that doesn't feel like home (the US), Wakanda for not helping black ppl outside of Wakanda, etc, etc.

The reason I believe black panther is one of the strongest films in the mcu is because killmonger did what no other villain in the mcu did, he changed the hero. In every other mcu film the villain has an evil point of view and the hero's just need to overcome something internally. With BP t'challa has to deal with a villain that is in many ways correct and by the end of the film changes his views to become more inline with the villain and no mcu has done that since.

The Heart Shaped Herb is basically a naturally occurring Super Soldier Serum. That's why it was so effective in Civil War for him to constantly be fighting Bucky and Cap. They were all the same caliber with similar advantages. T'Challa has Vibranium armor, Cap a vibranium shield, and Bucky has a cybernetic arm. Black Panther has always had the Vibranium suit in the comics. To take it away would be tantamount to taking away Batman's cape, cowl, and utility belt. I usually like Filmento's videos (he's gotten better throughout the years), but this one in particular shows bias, ignorance and misinformation. No one's calling anyone racist, but not understanding this film's motivations shows a close mind and a strong detachment from certain cultures and the past and present struggles of some people around the world.

@@HowdyItLovll 1. He first mentions the villain, and how it "didn't click with him, personally", which says absolutely nothing about the film or the character's motivations and development, only about Filmento's detachment from the situations presented, which is a fair statement, not everyone will relate, but doesn't really put down the movie or the character himself in any way. You can present a case on which Marvel villain is actually the best, but there must be a reason why so many people like Killmonger so much, so saying "he's not a good villain because I don't relate" doesn't really mean anything.
      2. Stakes. This video spends most of it's time obsessing over Black Panther's vibranium suit. Talking about how it lacks tensions because Black Panther is never in any real danger, but it's such a close minded view. This movie is not about the suit, and the villains' motive is not specifically killing Black Panther, they are beyond that. I never felt Black Panther was ever in danger, but the tensions was there, the stakes felt real. Internal struggles on how to lead Wakanda and manage it's resources, ideological tension between characters that ultimately cause a civil war, opposing views on what justice looks like, I could go on. Black Panther was invincible and yet was ultimately defeated: not only was he bested in combat by Killmonger, but he actually changed his position on how to best lead Wakanda after learning Killmonger's story. The movie has more layers than Filmento gives it credit for, and Black Panther's vulnerability go beyond face value.
He uses Batman as an opposing example, yet the scenes that were presented in the video weren't that strong to being with. The best part of Dark Knight is NOT when he gets shot by Harvey. Heck, I didn't even remember that part. Not once did I think anyone would kill Batman, because that's not what the movie was about. Yes, he's human and can technically die from a gunshot, but I don't think anyone ever thought "oh no, Batman could die from a gun wound at anytime during this movie". The idea that Black Panther is lackluster because he's invincible holds even less ground when you actually think about the fact that most superheroes in superhero movies ARE invincible. Not because of their powers or their suits, but just because the story never allows it. Before Infinity War, the heroes are always assumed to win, so in the audience's mind, they're never in any real danger anyways. The stakes are in their friends, family, the people they try to protect, the ideas they want to represent, etc. So to judge Black Panther solely on his vulnerability, or lack thereof, is not only to judge it on different standards than any other superhero movie, but to misinterpret what the movie is actually about.
3.Emotional and cultural investment: The following condescending lines from the video also support the idea that his criticism of the movie isn't him having a problem with the movie itself, but rather simply being disconected from the themes and characters presented in the movie: "When the Iron Man armor is gone, we will still have Tony Stark being Tony Stark, but without the Panther suit, all that's seem to remain... isn't anything too special" "To be fair, Black Panther isn't completely devoid of emotional stakes" "everyone can only watch in extreme sadness, and me, I mainly have a couple of different things going through my mind (...) who exactly is this guy again?". They could very well be honest opinions and reactions to the movie, but in the video they are presented without much evidence to back it up, and comes off as simple disinterest and nothing more. He doesn't explain why he finds Tony Stark interesting but not T'Challa. He doesn't explain what scene (or lack thereof) or what cinematography decision made him not care about Zuri. He doesn't explain why he doesn't care at all, he just says he doesn't care. Talk about telling and not showing.
You can have your opinions about movies, you can like and not like whatever you want. It doesn't make anyone racist or not racist. There are many good videos in FIlmento's channel where he studies in-depth many issues in many movies, but that's not the case here. I don't think it's a perfect movie. I thought the 3rd act was weaker than the rest of the movie, and the cgi was subpar compared to the impressive visual effects of other Marvel movies. There can be objective criticism pointing out actual flaws of this movie, and I'll gladly listen. However, this video is nothing more than FIlmento saying "I don't like it, can't relate".

His weapon is supposed to be based on vibranium mining tool, which means it can inflict direct damage on anyone wearing a vibranium suit.
But Claw got pushed aside to put Killmonger in the main villain role.
I wonder if leaving Claw as main villain is too much a metaphor of colonialism times (claw steal and harms african natives)
But that would make Killmonger vs black panther...black on black violence

Eh, I'm not really buying the Superman thing with T'Challa. I understand what you're getting at, but the suit isn't invulnerable. What you recommend they do is typically the arc that heroes go through as well, the first villain they fight has some kind of mirror quality, and the second villain they fight is typically a direct counter to force them out of their comfort zone (which is why I was so sad when Klaw died). Explosions, sonics, etc can damage the suit, and that will most likely be driven home in the sequel, as the world learns about Vibranium, counters will be devised.

I agree with you about Killmonger. This character probably wasn't written to be invested enough in his own revenge saga. Killmonger never felt like a proper threat, because most of what supposedly made him 'formidable' was explained away by other characters as expository dialogues. We never actually got to see his pre-movie journey from a small orphan to whatever Everett Ross later describes him to be. Also for a cold, calculative government-destabilizing, elite-forces veteran, the character surprisingly behaved far more like an angry jacked-up teenager throwing hissy fits and trying too hard to fit in with the cool crowd. Hence the threat felt entirely manufactured, and not organic as the story wanted the viewers to believe.

I believe his “angry jacked up teenager” personality was intended to be that if someone who grew up around the streets and in the hood but eventually left that environment for something else, evident by the middle ground he stays in between proper speech and AAVE. I think the main issue comes with the fact that it was very politically motivated. Sure, it's an action movie, but the main hype behind it is the ethnic culture, diversity, and political correctness. And there's nothing wrong with that. The issue is that a lot of people dislike the politics in it, so since the politics are mainly racial, to a lot of people, saying you dislike the politics is saying you dislike the diversity, and you're racist.
I know at least I've been called racist for not liking it. There's not a lot of people who say that, but it's definitely enough to be mentioned.

Black Panther is what Superman would be if someone in real life could achieve absolute - but MEASURABLE, AUTHENTIC - power on every single level.
Absolute physicall prowess, absolute intelligence, absolute technology development, and absolute governing status (what can be more empowering than being the sole ruler of the most advanced nation that ever existed?).
Tanehisi Coates's run in the Black Panther title mirrors this perfectly because it truly puts you in TChalla's shoes. The line between firm leadership and fierce dictatorship is scaringly thin.
His status as undisputed king makes him suffer in ways that not even his Vibranium-laced suit can prevent.
The weight of all the Wakandan lives on his shoulders. The series of existencial risks he runs through his head at all times. Should he keep Wakanda isolated? Or go global?
Every single thing he does brings a macro-existential risk.
Not even Superman has that weight. His dillemma is on a different level. It is on a more profound basis. One of principle.
His decisions are on the "global life preservation" side. Not on the geopolitical, "nation maintenance" side.
In truth, he can't even make such decisions - that's a running theme in his stories. With all his power, he can't defeat dictators or interfere with the national sovereignty of each Country. Each time he does it, he is considered a risk.
They both are different sides of "the Superman" concept.

Black panthers suit is not invincible I'm sure the next baddie will have some sort of disrupter much like in the train attached to his suit. The real issue with black panther is the motivations. Why is the king the protector. He has an army and protectors every movie would almost basically have to be someone overthrowing the kingdom for any real tension. You would think the king would turn that suit over to a family member or most important guard. No kingdom would allow a king to fight. That makes no sense. That's the issue. The suit is not.

Personally, I think the main focus of the film is how ones socioeconomic reality influences their power, and it makes statements regarding if it’s the duty of individuals with the power to help others. It’s a very similar message of Spider-Man with great power comes great responsibility, but in the context of black culture in America. The film sets up T’challa and Kilmonger as foils and runs them on parallel narrative. T’challa has inherited power and wealth and is shown to be reluctant to use that power to help others because he fears the repercussions of getting involved. Kilmonger on the other hand grew up with out the wealth and power and is enraged that people, like T’challa, who have the power don’t help those without. Kilmonger’s desire is strengthened by the fact that he is related to T’challa and feels that he was abandoned, and thus champions the cause of the downtrodden and seeks to steal that power in order to give power to the powerless. In the end, Kilmonger’s plan to start a violent rebellion on a global scale is stopped, because it’s extreme, but he’s a villain in a superhero of movie, so that expected. But, like any good foil Kilmonger exposes a character flaw in T’challa, and the culture of Wakanda, of failing to provide assistance to people in need because of greed, and T’challa learns from that and starts to use his wealth and power to help others. I think this narrative was incredibly relevant to black culture in America at the time when the movie came out. The first black president had just left office after 8 years and there was still a large amounts of racial inequality in America, and there seemed to be a question of whether Obama presidency actually reflected a positive change in race relations in AmericaIn. I personally loved this movie, but I understand the criticism of the over used parallel villain trope in Marvel movies, but I think Black Panthers use of it was the most nuanced and culturally relevant. Furthermore, Black Panther also flips the trope and T’challa is shown to be blind to his greed instead of the villain. I do respect you argument on the suit however, but I don’t think it’s really over powered it just focuses more on defensive capabilities rather then offensive abilities, as Black Panther was shown in Infinity War to be no where near the strongest when fighting Thanos. But, as a human, you are entitled to your opinion and if you don’t find a superpower set that focuses more on defense interesting, I respect that opinion.

The suit is both defensive and offensive. The suit absorbs attacks into a power he can use as an offensive power. He’s invulnerable to attacks making his super powers even more powered up. It just makes his offensive capabilities doubled. So his suit both offensive and defensive, and as this guy says he’s a superman dilemma

The suit is the only weakness of the movie. Like he said civil war black panther action scene is really good but in black panther movie we see the suit is too powerful. The theme is phenomenal and feel original rather than just a superhero movie.

I thought people realized the primitive guns part was a reference to hand to hand combat being more of a dance than allowing technology doing the work. Same with Kenobi’s line of him saying blasters were uncivilized- even though lightsabers are brutal explosive weapons. Hand to hand, or weaponry based combat is often times more complex and sophisticated terms of the facets of the subject and scenarios the techniques can be used on, making it cultured, or a civilized art.

I don't like how the technology of Wakanda was the main focus of the film, should've been the main plot point of the sequel. The main focus of the movie should've been on the actual BLACK PANTHER culture and religion and what Wakanda means to T'challa, for example he hates Klaue with a burning passion but we have never seen him interact with Klaue beforehand or see Klaue actually inflict any harm to Wakanda or its people, all we get is that this one character, who we don't care about, his parents were killed by him. The same drive that T'challa had in Civil War is no where near as strong or investing.
We never really grow a connection to these people and explore what they all mean to T'challa. The Black Panther feels strangely disconnected from the film and country, I mean Christ the Panther God is blissfully mentioned once through narration and there is little no visual asphetic of the architecture and clothing which at all relates to their God and leader aside from a statue.
Also I hate how Vibranium is used here. I can understand them making more advanced weaponry but making a whole car of vibranium and clothing too? it pretty much becomes a deus ex machina. It would've been a much more tonally gripping film if wakanda was portrayed to be much grittier and primitive with the vibranium mainly being used for weapons and having advanced computer systems. Have the tone be more akin to an African Dark Knight.
Also Black Panther himself was boring, no energy, no chemistry with anyone, no authority, no cool lines or strikingly intimidating or badass moments
Action sucked. CG was awful at times, we never clearly see Black Panther claw anything, and the sound effects were pretty cheap at times and recycled more than once

The problem is that what little exploration they did with the normal traditions of Wakanda was basically thrown out the window for the film's third act. They spent the first part of the movie showing us the importance of trial by combat and how only certain people could challenge and what it would mean to the entire nation.
But when T'Challa gets beaten like a dirty rug by Killmonger, all the natives of Wakanda seem to just forget all about that tradition in favor of an all-out coup on the RIGHTFUL monarch, who won the throne fair and square. I felt like that basically invalidated all of the opening narration that set up the "rules" of the story.

I know that this is 2 years too late but I would love to see in the next film he gets his suit taken away and wear some sort of tribal outfit that still somehow looks like his suit but also looks very African, maybe a carved wooden panther mask. And I love the claws as weapons so I think they'll be cool if he kept that maybe as in gloves with the last of the little vibranium on it so he still has very strong weapons. But they would have to give a good reason why he couldn't get his suit back. Maybe he's cut off from wakanda

His weakness is his ego. He is struggling with how to be a king to his people. Putting on a suit & kicking ass is the easy part. He could have put an abrupt end to the Killmonger stuff, seeing as how he committed treason just to get to Wakanda, but he let his ego push them to the battle ritual, putting Wakanda at risk.
