It's a good line, but not 100% true. There's more with the hit on Denzels character and how the 3 "wiseman" can be bought whether proven right or wrong. I take Alonzo line in this as a manipulating tactic to force Jake into doing his schemes. He wants Jake to believe that he can't beat Alonzo in this game, which was false at the end.
"Control your smiles and crys..." epic line. This movie was very representative of the military police state of Georgia and California with policing tactics in the late 80's ERA... Definitely an age focused film that created a narrative that many adults whom grew up in that violent police era could easily relate too...
Also the fact that Jake earn respect of two gangs in the movie by just being good police officer meanwhile Alonzo only had the bloods and mexicans under his control due to fear but jake earn their respects by saving smiley cousin from being rape and the bloods by helping them not take Alonzo bullshit anymore

Denzel Washington plays an incredibly convincing villain. Normally, before I see a film, I'll read up a little so I'll have some idea what's going on. For some reason, 21 years ago, I went to see this film with zero foreknowledge of the plot or characters. I simply thought this would be a case of a veteran detective showing a young protégé how to police the streets. Imagine how surprised I was to see Alonzo Harris slowly reveal himself to be much more than an avant-garde unconventional detective, ultimately committing murder and rationalizing his reasons.
I really think Alonzo started off as a good cop like Jake. But started to be groomed into the business by the higher ups. Proably had financial troubles and wanted to make more money. I do believe the 3 wisman that he had a meeting with at that high scale resteraunt most likely groomed him into the business over years of having Alonzo do things off the books that don't sit well with real law. Working under guys like that with that position of power could easily influence a rookie cop to turn bad.
@KshonDaModern They making me do it, I'm just a loanly civil servant 🤣. The drug dealer cop has been in the business long enough to know how the 3 Wiseman operate
Alonzo was a cerebral/malignant narcissist. He love bombed, devalued and attempted to discard Jake. He gas lit jake when all else failed. I can point out all the scenes where this behavior takes place. Ive watch this movie 50 times or more.

There’s no message other than a sociopath who got caught up in too many schemes and feared for his own life was so cocky he thought he would somehow weasel out of it as he had his whole life

What I took from the movie is you can be a wolf in sheeps clothing all Lanzo kept saying was it takes a wolf to catch a wolf he thought Jake was a sheep but he was wrong
Hoyte and Alonzo’s relationship is similar to that of Lt Hunter and Ct Ramsey in Denzel’s other film Crimson Tide, I can’t help but think Training Day was heavily influenced by the mutiny on the SS Alabama where two characters are polar opposites of each other in terms of morals, ideals and overall character. One character is a by the book, well educated Rookie (Hoyte/Hunter) whilst the other an experienced veteran.
Honestly, did you watch this whole movie? He was a detective, so he wore street clothes, and the reason why he got smoked because he killed a made Russian guy in Vegas.
Jake was never a wolf he became the sheep dog alonzo was on the same path yet in a deleted scene he witnessed something and im sure a lot more experiences that made him a wolf
After reading a few comments, it occurred to me that this film has universal appeal like the game of Football 😄. Deep thinkers are drawn to the game (and the film) because they enjoy figuring out and analyzing subplots and character traits. Those not as deep are drawn to the game (and the film) are drawn to surface elements like violence and style.
When someone already has you at gun point already, do not challenge their resolve. Yes, they may not kill you, but they can fire a bullet in your ass and that should be more than enough to make you reevaluate your choices
I took a criminal justice course at LACC some years back and the instructor, a retired LAPD officer, spoke about how he trained Rapheal Perez at the academy. He spoke very highly of him at first. He knew something was odd when Perez had his own private office. After talking about the scandal, you could sense the disappointment in his tone..
What bothered me is Denzel and Halle both won Oscars that year. A crooked cop and an uneducated struggling single mom who has to sleep with a guy for a place to stay. I didn't bring color into it but those two performances were not proud moments for the black community.
You are looking at it the wrong way, Oscars are given for the best performance. These actors got the awards because they could act the best, it's a testament to their skills and not a social commentary on race.
The real movie is based on Special Investigation Section or currently known as Detective Support Services. It was called "S.I.S." Most of those guys were taken into the CIA as OPS people.
The movie was inspired by the Rampart Scandal involving C.R.A.S.H. in the '90s and Alozo was based on the corrupt police Rafael Perez who had a big part in it. The TV series based on the movie is what featured S.I.S.
@@SuperMoss15 You have severe comprehension problems. Alonzo character is based on Special Investigation Section Detective Armando Gutierrez who left LAPD to work at the CIA.

Obviously Jake earned the respect of these guys, he was useful to them and people close to him, and not because he was a good guy.
@@rishtsakhiba he earned their respect because of the actions mentioned above. this being useful to them is not a factor anymore.
