My friend passed just before his 21st birthday but he was a talented aspiring musician and watching Roland is like seeing a future that he never got to live. The way he looks, the way he speaks and the way he used to sing. It's uncanny.
Curt Smith shows you how a rock star can age gracefully if he takes care of himself. No eye makeup, no hair dye, just the natural look of a man not insecure that he will never be 20 again.
They are using tracks though. There's a reason it sounds so good, this has been pre-produced, like all pro's do nowadays. Combined with incredible musicians and an amazing sound engineer, great gear and a fantastic room.
I'm 74 just turned, and I'm sitting here rocking out to them I feel like I was born and raised in England sitting here in Northern California.... what a great recording would love to give a shout out to Spotify great job excellent sound !!! It's a beautiful May Day in 2022' sure wish you guys would come to California would love to see you perform in person.....
although they were big in the States, they were underrated at the time. never really given their due, and yes I liked their music a lot, even though I was more into hard rock(at 60 I still am).
I'm a pro sound man and been a musician myself for about 15 years. Today I realized that, in this crazy world that we all live in, I haven't taken the time to listen to an entire album or live recording top to bottom in months, if not years... I remembered the old days where I used to listen to all 13 albums of The Beatles (plus Past Masters) on repeat about 10 times each minimum... no kidding... I would let each of them on the plate for 3 months and listen to the whole thing after class every day. Instead of increasing the volume, I would listen so quietly you could hear it spinning - I'm talking CDs, mind you! That's how I got ears able to hear up to 14kHz after years of live drumming. Today I found this... I closed the light... couldn't stream the image properly so I blacked out the screen... sat in my chair, got my best pair of headphones, bring the volumes down to 1-2 notches (youtube volume at about 1 third of the way) and this was enough, because great mix sounds huge without a lot of gain in your sound system or headphones at all. I forgot what it was not to had a single thought running consciously thought your head, not to look up the comments, not to say something or play or tap along the music of watch the camera work (which is quite nice)... just the sound, just the music... and they are performing for you right there in your room... the best mix I heard in years... transcend the soul... amazing!
I am also a drummer and in the Pro-Audio industry (recording studios). Nearly 64 and remember this LP stuff when it first came out (Roland actually lives nearby). I am enjoying listening to this live version with comments tonight (heck it's 3:42am and still 20 minutes to go ... need my sleep ideally but I will wait).
I was an 80's metalhead. These guys somehow got under my skin and now they are truthfully my favorite retrospective music from that period of time. Even during the spell when Curt Smith left and Roland Orzabal went on without him I thought it was great music. But together, not together, these two musicians are just absolutely amazingly talented individuals who were better together than apart--but still great alone!
Great point. In the 80s I thought they were just OK. Now 34 years later I appreciate them more than ever. Great musicians and they sound fantastic live. Songs from The Big Chair really do stand up well after all these years. They are classics!
@@jerryhuffar6561 We didn't know how bad we were going to have it for the next 35 years. The best of the 80s bands kept outdoing each other. The second act 80s bands like this are outrageously amazing compared to the radio grist we hear today - I liked TFF ok back then, but took them for granted, not realizing we were near the end of an amazing run of original pop music. These guys still sound excellent.
I think pretty much all their songs have an incredibly cool groove. That's what first drew hardcore metalheads to them. Drew my brother in, that's for sure. :))
I never realized how sophisticated their songs were till I saw them played live. Special props to the drummer creates the framework with complex rhythms, fills and sublime touches. wow!
Everbody Want To Rule The World is timeless. People could think it's a new song in 30 years if they were listening to it for the first time. Absolutely brilliant.
Jordan Smith I'm glad I grew up in the 80's listening to these guys when they just came out and all the other brilliant bands and musicians during the New Wave era,Will always treasure the memories,These songs just take me way back
So true. I am so fortunate to have been of an age (graduating from HS when SFTBC) was released to really appreciate this band and their genius. I really, really love Roland and Curt. So many of their songs take me right back in time to a place(s) I have very fond memories of.
Audio engineering is definitely an under-appreciated trade. Even listening to the audio on a crappy pair of Chromebook speakers is enough to give me chills!
I’m from the north east of England.. I’ve followed this band from 1982 onwards.. They were the first band I ever saw live.. Newcastle City Hall 22/3/83 The Hurting Tour. A concert I’ll never forget.. I’ve visited their native town of Bath on many occasions and may I say that their perfection and class is representative of where they are from. Absolutely amazing fantastic band.
I was once of the fans onsite during this day. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity, it was all live (well mostly, a few songs had synth bass and some drum loops) the guys sounded this good (the mix is better than it was there) and I will be grateful for the experience for the rest of my life... a bucket list moment for sure.
NSLfreak It was a couple of months ago, September I think. I was laughing and smiling the whole time, as were most everybody there. It was very cool, and seeing this reminds me of how damn lucky I am to be living in LA. That's me at 25:28.
"You can hear a pin drop" That's out respect for such a outstanding performance! No phones, no screaming, just listining..... That what I like of this small perfomanches.
@@BassByTheBay probably because his voice is not as good anymore and with the music having stopped and all eyes and ears on him he was afraid to sing it and in order to resolve the tension cracked the joke about the pin dropping. I thought it was a really weak moment during that concert.
@@michaelleong1977 Apparently it was inspired by "primal therapy". John Lennon got into it before he died. It involved confronting your fears with screaming and, I guess, crying. They met the founder of the movement in the mid 80s and were really disappointed that the guy seemed to be overly commercial.
Roland is just off the scale for his musical abilities.. All of the intricate parts on Seeds Of Love just to watch him play his parts and sing with such power is just mind blowing.
It was 1982 and I was living in Bath apprenticing for a cool hair salon called Opposite. Every Saturday these two would serenade our clients. I remember those voices and harmonies like yesterday! Now almost 40 years later, I’m so happy to hear this. Those voices are still amazing! Thank you for the memories of your great music! Love from Victoria Canada!! ❤️
I was listening to Head over Heels without looking at the video here as Roland was singing and omg!!! He sounds EXACTLY like he did in 1985. Try it. Just scroll up so you don't see him singing and just listen. I could just a picture a young Roland in the library. I love this beautiful man. A true genius. With a beautiful accent too..
Head Over Heels and The Working Hour still make me cry today. Songs from the Big Chair is a phenomenal and a masterpiece album. Orzabal's voice it's absolutely incredible.. I love him so much.
When we listen to you at hospital, between helping fighting Covid and worrying what we might bring home, you give us joy and strength to continue our fight.
I’m so wishing I could have been in the audience. Curt and Roland are gods to me. A friend asked me today if I was “happy”. I said happy, what does that mean? I’m content, I responded. But as I listen to this, I can honestly say that I am truly 100% happy when I’m listening to these two sing. No question that for this brief moment, I couldn’t possibly be anything less than happy.
+Jonathan Cetti - The sequenced percussion track is nothing new to their live performance. Regarding the programmed bass part(s)....big deal....Geddy Lee does it all the time! One question... How do you "Hear" Auto-Tune?
+Greg Miller - The drummer, Jamie Wollam, is one of the very best drummers anywhere in the world. Not-to-mention they're playing in one of the most renown L.A. Studios. This combination has no choice but to sound great!
Yes, The Working Hour is not as flashy as their tubes but it might be their greatest achievement. It has a natural progressive rock feel. Amazing song !
Unconditional love and everlasting respect for those guys . I fucking love this band. And they still sound exactly the same. How old is Roland?? Man, Can`t believe those pipes !!!! His voice is still intact ! I wish he could do next time " The famous last words " ( one of my favs )
It is clear to see from this video why they split up and didn't talk to each other for so long as it is also clear that they need each other completely. What a class act they are.
An example of the miraculous happenings when entities of differences free their restraints in order to bring together the best of all perspectives creating an even greater whole.
They don't smoke and don't drink. There is no other explanation! How the hell you can manege your voice so well over the time. They sound as good as 30(+) years ago. Impressive performance made by impressive and, have this feeling, slightly underrated band.
I am of their generation and I also played and sung a lot in those years, and still do. Obviously, nowhere near their success or one might argue, talent. However, also a non-smoker non-drinker, my voice has got better since the early 80s, better technique, better control, better tone. Once upon a time aging was considered good for arts like for wine, then it became "it's for the young". Stil great music created by octogenarians McCarthney and the like... but the young prefer trap and the likes...
@@rawzpfeiffer5521 Roland was knocked out by the death of his wife and (in his own words) lost a year. It's not really surprising that he had some off moments on the first tour after that. And of course age gets to everyone in the end (except Glenn Hughes).
Compare CURT Smith to ROBERT Smith. Robert Smith now looks like someone's lesbian aunt. I like the Cure, but he should've taken better care of himself.

My sister bought their 1989 "The Seeds of Love" record and i was kinda embarrassed with myself for digging it because i was totally into GN'R, Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc. These guys know how to make pleasant music, that's the fact.
Back in the 80’s, this was what I played in my car when driving. Both sides of the cassette, over and over. Years back I bought a remastered gold disc on CD and it is just impeccable.
the working hour is for me one of the most beautiful songs by Tears for Fears, really underrated, unfortunately they don't sing it in their shows! Still, we loved it!

RUclips suggested this during COVID-lock down, after I had viewed Curt and Diva's unplugged version of Mad World about 50 times. I graduated from high school the year Songs from the Big Chair came out, and the Tears for Fears singles could be heard everywhere. FF to 2022 and I bought a re-issue LP of Songs... and it is just magic. This Landmark concert is every bit as magic. Hearing the back stories and the songs is a fabulous experience. I hope Spotify releases on either a physical media (Blu-ray etc) or download and includes the full material (like the Get Back documentary), including outtakes etc. That would be a great way to kill a weekend during the winter.
I grew up as a teenager in the UK in the 80's. Tears For Fears were one of the best UK groups ever, they ruled the 80's in the UK....amazing live show there too...
Curt & Roland... I cannot express the gratitude i feel for you both for having made my life a better experience. Being a source of happiness, inspiration, support and comfort. You two are eternal and occupy a big and important part in the history of music, culture and, specially, many lives all over Earth. Simply... thank you. 💓💓💓💓💓💓
A defining moment of my youth. Songs from the Big Chair came out in the same year that music changed the political landscape and crossed boundaries globally through the event 'Live Aid'. It was a remarkable year for music and this album remains one of my favourite ever. The nostalgia with each note, each bar comes flooding back and tangibly evokes memories of my 18th year. Listening to it again now and hearing the stories behind some of the songs brings those memories back again. Thanks for posting!
this bands songs defined the 80's for me, young married woman with little kids, trying to do the right thing, enjoying life, and wow did I love to dance to these guys songs.
I first heard Everybody Wants to Rule the World a couple months ago on the radio. I saved it on my notepad to look for later on youtube, so glad I did as it led to their other works! So in love with TFF now, topped my other fav. bands, purely amazing!
2005 was my first ever concert, and it was Tears For Fears at the Britt in Jacksonville, OR. I had no idea who they were, but a live concert sounded fun, as I had never attended one before. It was the summer after 5th grade - I had just started learning how to play guitar that year. Since then, guitar has grown into my primary hobby. T4F has never been a massive influence on me, but I can't help but love the energy of their music. Such full, rich sound! Here I am 17 years later finding brand new inspiration from them!
I think the key with them is that they did not waste thier voices and abilities to play on drug addiction etc.which is pretty rare and I am grateful to be able to hear this great band still sound as good as they did 30plus yrs.ago.
Are you 100 percent sure of the opinion you state as fact? I am a bit skeptic of the sound being presented as recorded livevas same as the video...simultaneous? Darylrs house is one of the best if not the best recording places . what Im saying is that the clarity of sound is way to clean to be recorded as you observe a so called or pertrayed live performance.
Saw these guys last week. They are so adorable, professional, and talented. They still look and sound fabulous, no special effects, no plastic surgery...so natural and good=

One of the best stories in music of forgiveness, reunion, and humility. The struggle they had trying to redeem their past failures is an inspiring story to all who know it. The thing I love about these guys is they don't sound too much different when they sing live then when they record in the studio
This is one of the tightest, cleanest, most beautiful performances I've ever seen on film. Bravo.
I absolutely agree, on point.
No more words to say about 👏👏👏
Amazing performance for sure !
and this guy knows what he's talking about, surely!
"Shout" gave my goose bumps. They (in particular Roland) are incredibly talented. Musical geniuses.
Curt Smith shows you how a rock star can age gracefully if he takes care of himself. No eye makeup, no hair dye, just the natural look of a man not insecure that he will never be 20 again.
But still a bit pissed with Roland. I don't think that is ever going to heal imo.
@@niceguy235uk1 What do you mean by "heal?" Has he been a substance abuser or something?
@@martysmith5260 "After The Seeds of Love, Orzabal and Smith had an acrimonious falling out and parted company in 1991."
@@martysmith5260 Their brutal recording schedule making _The Seeds of Love_ that Roland insisted on caused Curt's first marriage to fall apart, IIRC.
Lovely post!
How on earth does this sound so perfect? How have their voices not changed over the decades? MIND. BLOWN.
When it comes from the heart it never goes away.
I love them but the answer is sound engineer, they sound suberb though
Rolands has gone a bit when you see some of the newer live stuff, but I agree they sound great on this.
They are using tracks though. There's a reason it sounds so good, this has been pre-produced, like all pro's do nowadays. Combined with incredible musicians and an amazing sound engineer, great gear and a fantastic room.
Listen to The Cure. Robert Smith has physically aged badly but his voice hasn't changed whatsoever and is as amazing as ever.
Im almost 60 myself. Great guys. Sing on, dance on, rock on. But overall love on and live on and live with love.❤
Surely one of the most underrated bands on the planet!!!!!!
No way, they were the shit during the 80's, at least here in Brazil.
no
they were big lol, most new wave artists were even through this day, since they are mainstream.
Were you asleep during the 80's? They were huge.
although they were big in the States, they were underrated at the time. never really given their due, and yes I liked their music a lot, even though I was more into hard rock(at 60 I still am).
I forgot what it was not to had a single thought running consciously thought your head, not to look up the comments, not to say something or play or tap along the music of watch the camera work (which is quite nice)... just the sound, just the music... and they are performing for you right there in your room... the best mix I heard in years... transcend the soul... amazing!
@Keegan Racey Did someone hit you with the dumb-stick Keegan. He knows it's Tears for Fears, and he's enjoying it. Go play Minecraft.
@Keegan Racey Ha! Fair. Sorry, I misunderstood your comment. You have not been hit with any dumbsticks. I apologise.
@Keegan Racey Thanks for not attacking Rock School. Very cool move...we all need more people like you ;)
True listening! Seems to be a lost habit nowadays...
Amazing how that happens. Beauty of music
Yes! Elemental was a masterpiece!
I never realized how sophisticated their songs were till I saw them played live. Special props to the drummer creates the framework with complex rhythms, fills and sublime touches. wow!
I was admiring the drumming too.
Starky?
I totally agree what a great sound.....
Everbody Want To Rule The World is timeless. People could think it's a new song in 30 years if they were listening to it for the first time. Absolutely brilliant.
Jordan Smith I agree with you.
Jordan Smith . Any relation to curt. And yes i agree with you. Not keen on it by lorde. 👍
Songs like this in the 80s are definitive and memorable.
Shout out to the engineers on this live session, particularly with regard to the percussion. That snare tone on EWTRTW is spectacular. 10/10
I strongly agree!
Audio engineering is definitely an under-appreciated trade. Even listening to the audio on a crappy pair of Chromebook speakers is enough to give me chills!
Exactly! A very "nutty" woody kind of tone to it, that was warm and pleasing but with a nice refined attack to it. Yum!
@@EgoShredderYou're a wino SAY IT! Lol, good description though.
This is easily one of the best sounding bands out there. It's incredible.
Well said - excellent choice of words 9n your part too!!!🙏💋🙏
Amazing, Hughes from Brazil
I was once of the fans onsite during this day. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity, it was all live (well mostly, a few songs had synth bass and some drum loops) the guys sounded this good (the mix is better than it was there) and I will be grateful for the experience for the rest of my life... a bucket list moment for sure.
When was exactly this?
dude, so lucky. in "Shout" I'd probably cried.
NSLfreak It was a couple of months ago, September I think. I was laughing and smiling the whole time, as were most everybody there. It was very cool, and seeing this reminds me of how damn lucky I am to be living in LA. That's me at 25:28.
Lucky man.

Thanks, George.
"You can hear a pin drop" That's out respect for such a outstanding performance! No phones, no screaming, just listining..... That what I like of this small perfomanches.
Respect... plus everyone waiting for Roland to sing "Time flies." 😊
The song is incomplete without "time flies". I sing it every time I listen to this version because I can't stand the cliffhanger. 😅
@@wennierockt7209 Ha! I was imagining it in my head as Roland just stood there waiting. Why in the world wouldn't he sing it?!
@@BassByTheBay probably because his voice is not as good anymore and with the music having stopped and all eyes and ears on him he was afraid to sing it and in order to resolve the tension cracked the joke about the pin dropping. I thought it was a really weak moment during that concert.
Love this song ^^ ♥♥♥
Tears For Fears will never get old! ♥♥♥

How did the name Tears For Fears originate?
@@michaelleong1977 Apparently it was inspired by "primal therapy". John Lennon got into it before he died. It involved confronting your fears with screaming and, I guess, crying. They met the founder of the movement in the mid 80s and were really disappointed that the guy seemed to be overly commercial.
thanks for the great playlist!
Roland is just off the scale for his musical abilities.. All of the intricate parts on Seeds Of Love just to watch him play his parts and sing with such power is just mind blowing.
You took the thoughts right out of my head! His deep, powerful voice is like no other!
Year of the Knife and Badman Song are the two songs that really showcase his vocal range
They are responsible for great moments of the background track of my childhood.
Christomb Charcot you mean when Mtv was cool?? Oh yes...
What awesome beautiful memories Carina...
What a great memory
You're quite privileged indeed. I'm from the Philippines and I lost the opportunity to attend their concert in 2010!
Now THAT's a memory. Oh to be a fly on that wall. Nice memory Carina. Be well
OMG!!! Seriously, what were they like in person??? Omg tell me more
It's unbelievable how good their voices have remained after all these years...
I agree with you
Doesn’t get much better than this. What an amazing performance. They still sound amazing after all these years.
Must be said - this is a masterclass in live rock 'n roll - Tears for Fears with a mind blowing backing band
I'm 45 and I grew up listening to them . I still have chills listening to their songs.
+Ms. C. 44 and the same, right in the feels.
They played here in austin Texas but I was oversees on vacation in 2014.
Love this band, what quality, I'm 67 I've liked them when I first heard them a thousand years ago, great music is timeless.
"A thousand years ago" haha, I like that! Agree.
Yeah, I was 29 when that album hit the market and they are as great today as they were back then. 😎
Head Over Heels
and The Working Hour still make me cry today. Songs from the Big Chair is a phenomenal and a masterpiece album. Orzabal's voice it's absolutely incredible.. I love him so much.
When we listen to you at hospital, between helping fighting Covid and worrying what we might bring home, you give us joy and strength to continue our fight.

I pray you are Ok now
A living proof that good music never dies....simply amazing !!!
They are absolutely brilliant song writers-if I was a krillionaire I’d pay them a fortune monthly to just write and record forever. 👍😃
Unmistakably awesome 😅!!
So so so very wonderful, twoderful!??
Orzabal's voice is spectacular
Has not aged a decade!!..Both sound great!!

What a voice Roland has! His ability to Improvise and express emotions is incredible!
Damn these guys still sound at the top of their game.
+timrs2001 indeed
+timrs2001 That was unbelievable!
+timrs2001 I think it's the sound mixing, everything is so so clean
+Jonathan Cetti - The sequenced percussion track is nothing new to their live performance. Regarding the programmed bass part(s)....big deal....Geddy Lee does it all the time!
One question... How do you "Hear" Auto-Tune?
+Greg Miller - The drummer, Jamie Wollam, is one of the very best drummers anywhere in the world. Not-to-mention they're playing in one of the most renown L.A. Studios. This combination has no choice but to sound great!
Roland's voice still gives me chills. What a legend❤️
Fuck, these guys are even better live, 30 years AFTER they released these songs. Amazing.
Their music has aged like a good wine. Perfectly. Curt and Rowland are such wonderful musicians and beautiful souls. Bless you both 🙏
It’s 2021 and still listening to Tears For Fears. The Working Hour is so underrated.
It's a GREAT song !!
Mother’s talk is awesome
FACTS.
Yes, I am obsessing with the working hour these days, the whole album in fact
Yes, The Working Hour is not as flashy as their tubes but it might be their greatest achievement. It has a natural progressive rock feel. Amazing song !
Conclusion of the video: Tears for Fears is simply timeless
Yep. Sounds great in 2019.
Truth!

Unconditional love and everlasting respect for those guys . I fucking love this band. And they still sound exactly the same.
How old is Roland?? Man, Can`t believe those pipes !!!! His voice is still intact !
I wish he could do next time " The famous last words " ( one of my favs )
Mr. Marino 57
Watch the concert in France July 2019, then rethink what you think.
Underrated? Are you a aficionated to music? That Band its a exquisite and sofisticated band!!! Very apreciated for a lot of musicians.
Best 39minutes and 42 seconds of my life

My sister bought their 1989 "The Seeds of Love" record and i was kinda embarrassed with myself for digging it because i was totally into GN'R, Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc. These guys know how to make pleasant music, that's the fact.
The performance for "The Working Hour" had me in tears. Nothing short of incredible!
I must agree! Better than the studio version , I love it!

Seeing these guys play live so accurately makes me respect an admire them even more. Huge thumbs up for this one. It’s inspiring!

YES waited a long time. Hopefully Tears for Fears will all still be alive when they get in.
Yay me to
There's something very rotten going on at the Hall. Lots of good bands are missing.
And who are you to say if they eere on dope or not? Are you their new publicist? ..????
Absolutely🎉
Saw these guys last week. They are so adorable, professional, and talented. They still look and sound fabulous, no special effects, no plastic surgery...so natural and good=
