Dell Optiplex 790 smokers edition cleanup - this is disgusting!

This is one of the worst desktop computer cleaning jobs we've done. This was given to us after providing a new Dell Optiplex 5060. This old Dell 790 was cased in 7 years of dirt, grime and nicotine.
The grime was beyond a normal air blower clean up so we completely disassembled for cleaning.
Due to the decent 3.1Ghz CPU, we added some additional RAM and our next steps for this unit is to replace the HDD with an SSD. Even with the hard drive it still performs well so this will be donated to our local church for use.

I just cleaned a 790, the cpu heat sink was a solid wall of crust. check it the one I just posted.

Yep, agreed! The only way to clean the CPU fan was using an alcohol based solution. The fans now actually spin at the correct speeds again without the gunk! 🙂

10 year old computer. Appears it’s soon time for an upgrade since it will be too old to run Windows 11.

My plan for this is to add an SSD and install Windows 11 on it. It'll run OK once even with an unsupported CPU & no TPM 2.0. It'll then be donated to a local church charity. 🤩
