What makes grapevine a more ideal licking branch than other tree branches? About what height would Ted suggest for placing the horizontal rub branch?

should the licking branch/vine be directly over(parallel) the end of the horizontal rub or 90 degrees(perpendicular to the horizontal rub)
What is the advantage of a horizontal rub? Do you use any scent to get deer started using it?
Can you just use three old fence post? I have 3 posts that are 3 inches around and 7 feet long would that work?
How did you come up with using the scotch pine for the rub and grapevine for the licking branch?

So far the only takers on my rub post have been a black bear and an elk. I may have made it a little too big for the deer.... on the bright side, this is the first time I've had elk on camera.

I put four of theses out on four different farms the last week of Sept. 2020 , all of them put by long time heavily used mineral sites and even hung a grapevine liking branch . I done every thing the way Ted said right down to the T and mind you these or heavily used area's right next to bedding areas. it is now10/29/20 and none of these have been touched . I can set on a stand and watch 20 deer go by and they just walk by them like there no there . Been hunting for over 60 years so whats the hell is going on.

Wyatt Michaud Ted prefers Scotch pine and likes to set them up in the middle of bedding areas
If you did not have Scotch Pine available what would be your second choice of pine?

We don't have scotch pines in south Texas... would something like this work with mesquite?
Tim D potentially. The trick is you want a tree that has tons of sap. That keeps the limb from drying out quickly. The sap holds scent better as well

Dusty Bowhunter the actual rubbing tree yes. But Ted is doing all his prep work now so he can slide in there and install the rubbing limb in late September without disturbing more of the woods.

He's not putting any scent on it. He learned it from watching elk rub horizontal trees out west.

Should the rub tree be freshly cut so it's still a little sappy or can you keep the same one year after year?
fresh. Once they dry out the bucks quit using them.
ok thanks. I don't have scotch pine but I'm assuming anything that is a little aromatic and sappy will work. I have some white pine and hemlock I can use.

What was the sand and top soil for? I have never seen that for making a mock scrape.

He did not say why use the Sand though. There is Zero Sand where I would put one up at. Ugh.
That's why he put sand in this spot...sand + loamy soil makes for easier scraping and it probably holds more scent. You can get 50# play sand for a couple bucks at any hardware store.

The sand keeps the soul from compacting too much. Also helps keep vegetation from growing too well.

No
Would Cedar be the best tree to use in the South?
Michael Gammill it works but not nearly as well as pine
Is there anything besides scotch pine you can use. Here on the east coast don't think we have that. Maybe cedar?
cedar works OK but not nearly as well as pine. Any sort of sappy bark is best.

I used Willow and they work Awesome! My Set up is a little different though. I go Horizontal but down then up at an angle and use Three Horizontal Limbs. They Love it but it has to be Fresh Willow. I put mine in here in Mississippi first of September. First of Oct I change them out. I also do not do a Mock Scrape. Just put them on the fringe of a Bedding area close to where an old Scrape was. The place is by a ditch and is a CRP field with 15 Foot Oaks.
I have used Cedar and it works but the Willow really works here.

Why add sand to scrape underneath top soil??? Why make a horizontal rub instead of just making a vertical rub ?
They seem to prefer rubbing a horizontal limb.
every thing hes done the deer here do on there own and have for 1000s of years.

Jon St. We do most of our stuff on RUclips but some things on Facebook and Instagram as well. We record many of our podcasts live on Facebook. Then we edit them and post the shorter versions on RUclips after the fact. We record them live over there so we can answer questions in real time as we’re having the conversation. You still shouldn’t be missing much by following solely on RUclips

The dog must be for watching your back with spring bears. Not applicable for public land unless u r making decoy for hunters to get false hope over in a marginal spot. I hang woodvine/grapevine with paracord over travel routes on public land in spots that r very thick & most people don't know they exist.

i willing to bet this is a high fenced property there's no way this is an open property with deer like that around?!! if this is an open range, damn who ever is his neighbor is one lucky neighbor to have deer like this around, but i doubted it.. it's most likely high fence property, this is the only video i doubt, cause so many monster deer in it to be open property unless it's high fence.
Now ppl will start using wire and such.The deer will get tangled,well then you can just go shoot them😞
