- For no reason other than we were all there at the same time, we took our favourite off-road hoon-wagon, an Ariel Nomad, and the brand-new Triumph Scrambler 1200, and pitched them against each other. Which is better? Which is faster? Subscribe now: smarturl.it/aut...
The Ariel Nomad has a 2.4-litre Honda engine with around 240bhp and weighs around 700kg. Our driver has never seen the forest we're racing around before.
The new Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE has a 90hp parallel twin and weighs just over 200kg. It's being ridden by former British and World Enduros Racer, British rally and Cross Country Championship competitor, Matt Reed, who is a Triumph Adventure Experience Centre instructor.
Join us, then, as we pitch these two machines against each other and the elements. And if you like this, why not like, subscribe and turn on notifications so you never miss another video. Subscribe now: smarturl.it/aut...

The bike ridden was on the limit, kudos to the rider for his control. Imagine loosing control at 80mph in the dirt with those trees close by. That's why riding a dirt bike/scrambler takes more "cojones" than a caged rally car! 😉 Well done to Triumph too, the scrambler 1200 XE is a great bike 👍
"Off road." That track you are on is better maintained than most of the roads where I live.
Well, where do you live
@@naveengowda4327 namma kannadiga 💀🙄
4000 miles on my Scram12XE. 3000 of those are on gravel or 2 track roads. Simply the best big do-all bike out there and it doesn't look like something out of a Transformer movie.
I prefer the Desert Sled even though Triumph are my favorite company - it's too big and too heavy. The short fall do the Ducati is the smaller tank but it's not that small very manageable- triumph is made better but it's so beefy and over sized
@@jjames2162Triumph is only 10 lbs heavier, more HP and Torque and better suspension all the way around. I take it you are vertically challenged or haven't figured out how to Captain Morgan at stops.
Mark Jacobs that's pretty funny Mark! Thanks for the laugh. No way it's only ten pounds. It's much taller. I was on one the other day. Huge in comparison. It's a better bike for sure but not $$$. Thousands better. Triumph I my favorite brand but I'm still going with the DS due to the size and price difference. Ride safe buddy
Look up the weight yourself. Scram is 457lbs dry and Duc is 435lbs.
Having ridden the Scrambler i knew it was a capable bike but this win was down to Matt's riding skills and his huge kahones! 😎👍
Great riding skills of the biker!!...
I realize you are car magazine, but I would love to see more bikes
Up
Insane that Triumph's Scrambler (basically a naked ADV bike) whipped the Nomad. Noticed the scrambler had a proper knobby at the front and a different tire at the rear (looks like a 150?) - either way, would love to see Matt rip on a proper dirt bike!
turbo busa
I don't believe there was any whipping here, bikes don't beat 4 wheels in almost anything except fun factor and opposite-sex attraction lol
@@CandEAdventures Spot on lmfao
F1 teams would pay and arm and a leg for 20 seconds! lol.... Nomad £36k Scrambler £12k no brainer, go for the scrambler:)
I loved seeing the whole laps
the ariel is fantastic but for the money, you could have the triumph and 70K left over for a nice helmet and tires lol
Yes and you have money left.
Wow, I'm a big Triumph fan (I own 2, though neither are Scramblers!), but I never thought it would beat the Nomad around there. I love Ariel's too - but well chuffed the Trumpet got the win!
More than one lap and the Triumph would have broken down.
@@rharris8344 Why would that be then?
All car reviewers should ride bikes I imagine like driving it makes you better at it
I really thought the Nomad would win... that bike is too beautiful to be this fast offroad! That Nomad is awesome too :)
Both super sweet vehicles!
Matt Reed, he can ride!
Choosing the Scrambler is like throwing knobbly tires on a Range Rover and sending it round. That trail looks great for a T700 or a WR450
Pretty obvious the bike will win, but goddamn the Nomad is a cool vehicle.
Nice dirt bike... should bought one 🤔👌🏼
Entertaining video, but the only thing being compared here is the skill and bravery of rider vs. driver.
Superb video, loved it, cheers.
This is just like that scene from “the man from U.N.C.L.E”
Nice video, but from my humble opinion it doesn't make much sense to compare a "car" like this that is not approved for road use against a bike that is. The Ariel must not be subjected to any discharge bottleneck with relative approval, mapping of the control unit and gas supply, and the additional weight that it involves etc ... I would have seen more of a comparison with a Husqvarna FC 450 motocross bike or with a KTM 450 SX-F.
Awesome video! Kudos
I wasn't expecting bike to be faster... All kudos to the rider
he leaned in with his heavy pair
It wasn't lol
That was good fun to watch, thanks gents
11:01 that was wonderful
That Nomad is such a cool rally car /Mad Max ripper.
The Nomad could smoke the Scrambler through there, just about any bike I guess. Still, great to see a big dollop of Triumph getting caned on the loose. Fun video. Do it again with a 500 2t. Put the driver on the vintage bike and Matt in the Nomad.
the driver in the atom was scared in the race was barely trying..
Something wrong with that bike frame - it's clearly twisted front to rear and very noticeable in some shots.
“There is no winner here”.... yes there is, it’s the one that went the fastest in the race... the bike!!!
oh boy.. lol... beating a 2 wheel drive track car with bald road tires only by 13 seconds is definitely LOSING lol. If that Atom had a set of Maxxis it would have ass-raped that bike. But that goes for anything 2 wheel versus 4 wheel on a course. 4 wheels will win as long as the laws of physics are still laws lol a 1990 mustang would lay waste to a 2020 Bussa on a track lol
Ohhhhhhh. Hit a sore point with Travis. Lol! What an over reaction. It’s just a bit of fun Trav 😢
@@cp4512 at least I'm not liking my own comment replys lol
@@cp4512 ok I lied now were even lmao
@@nighttrain1565 the triumph's rear suspension was visibly undersprung. Ultimately, the scrambler is an exercise in styling and a real properly set up adventure bike would probably show a better lap time
Un paramètre à aussi prendre en compte au moment de changer de lessive: Avec Ariel, le slip reste plus propre !!
Can’t you do one with the atom and the rage buggy please?
Surprised the bike won. Thats a car made for performance vs a bike made for looks. Imagine if they actually used a KTM 500EXC or even a Husqvarna 701. You know, bikes actually made to go fast in those conditions.
the driver in the ariel was not even trying.....
@Richard Golonka that bike is a tank. I know enough about bikes to know what a huge difference weight makes. The XE is 500lbs. That's 240lbs more than a KTM 500. And even a 701 is 150lbs lighter. Thats an enormous difference for performance, especially in the dirt.
@@mocioclistu the rear suspension on the scrambler was severely undersprung and slow rebound.
@@mocioclistuTriumph NEVER has claimed that it is a pure DIRT bike like the ones you boast about...but it DID take 5th overall at the Mexican 1000 in 99% stock form. I beat many 450s with pro riders on them. Funny that lots of them were KTMs and Huskys that it left in it's dust. Baja 1000 is next. Do you think KTM will have the balls to race an 1090R in it in stock form....doubt it. Your serve.
@@markjacobs6294 how does anything I said have anything to do with your reply? You sound like a Triumph fan boy but hurt that I called it fat. This bike weight basically twice as much as a KTM 450/500. All other things being equal the other bike is far superior. Period.
Next: On track pls
cool vid but I don't think we needed to see the full individual laps.
I love them both, even though I am not a biker and the Aerial seats are a complete joke.
Where was this filmed. From there being an instructor I am curious to arrange a visit
The Triumph Off Road school in South Wales at a guess. It's part of the Walters Arena complex iirc
@@WylieCoyote45 thank you
Excuse me - but your “off road” video was all done on a gravel road?
WHY is it.....that so MANY car reviewers.........go INTO...... Quentin Wilson mode.......as SOON as......the camera IS....... switched ON????
I can't believe they speak that way normally, and I really wish they wouldn't do it on video!
(And I'm not referring to the part where he is driving, just watch the first 22 seconds.)
I’ve got bad news for you buddy, Superman isn’t real.
@@samrit123in they don't need Superman, they've got Rachel Burgess but she never seems to get chance these days. Maybe she left?
In the Nomad you're bound to loose some fillings offroad.
I found it very concerning that you are going around this track without any gear on you and you’re talking to the camera
Didn't go full send in the Ariel.
I feel like it needs more nobly tyres
I reckon a moto crosser like what absolutely destroyed the nomad on the other nomad vid could be so rapid on here. Cr500!!
I'd take the car any day every day and I love bikes and cars in equal measure.
I'd take the bike, main reason is beating traffic on the roads. Nothing would feel better than filtering through traffic on a heavy rush hour.
@@Otherdave008 I was talking about on that track :-)
he should really be wearing a helmet
Nice car. Do they make a road version?
Yes it's called the Arial Atom and is a bit mental
Nice
Nice video - any idea where I can get that handlebar bag??
You should visit your
nearest Honda dealer
Bring the Stig
Pour accélérer dans une voiture....c'est le pied droit... Pitié !
I will take the family SUV
Top gear just did the same race with the same bike/rider but against a Jimni [lol] and the bike lapped in 3min20sec. Almost 10sec faster still.
Is that off road? Really?
The guy can barely see out of Ariel..wtf
Triumph Scrambler isnt a real off-roader , if you want a real off-road motorcycle there is one thing that could tackle everything , a bloodey motocross
I see your view and completely agree with it. Only thing is that they are both street legal. I know you can get plates for a motocross in some places but not everywhere. Both of these vehicles will be suitable for getaways on dusty trails or road, not for heavy off-road use .
Motocross tracks are more groomed than most public roads.
Enduro is more suited
I'm surprised the nomad hasn't gone to a dual clutch.
Weight
The Ariel nomad is not a family suv
just as well it wasn't against a proper off road bike then, that one is a road bike with appearance based additions
@Richard Golonka take it around a motocross track and see how it gets on against a real offroad bike, or more to the point race the car against its equivalent vehicle an enduro bike and see what happens
@Richard Golonka you again miss the point completely, the car is a proper off road racing vehicle, the bike is a glorified road bike
@Richard Golonka and that car could go around a motocross track, that bike could not
@Richard Golonka yeah it does, you are finally getting the idea, they are not real off road bikes
@Richard Golonka and how would you define that car then? And you keep contradicting your own argument and agreeing with what I said earlier, honestly couldn't make it up
The Triumph is cool and all, but hardly the bike you'd pick for an offroad race. I think something like a Husqvarna 701 or even KTM EXC500, would have been spot on for that setting. Still, fun race, the Ariel is cool, but offroad bikes are so much fun, plus you can take them on single track.
Roman S Agreed, But this” test” was on the Triumph “Off-Road Experience” track in Wales. If you want to do it against a KTM you probably need to be at “Sweet Lamb”, where the KTM off road school hangs out. Les
no helmet
Of course the Bike would be faster!and yes, if you had a few practice Laps you’d be faster, maybe ten seconds faster, but, the same goes for the Bike, the person riding it looked like you in some parts, tentative, good video though.....
The guy on the bike works as an instructor ON THIS VERY TRACK. 2:00
why does that atom have bald street tires from a Geo Metro?
Great advert. But no real comparison here. Love the car. Love the bike. Meh
The Triumph beats the Nomad by 30 seconds and there is no winner!! lol, rhetoric and excuses are not winners.
I was ‘Like’ 289 😃
Ariel driver is nowhere near race pace. More like a spirited weekend jaunt.
Forza Horizon IRL
Not saying the video is not cool, but the race was rather pointless given one of the drivers does not know the track while the other works there as a mfkin instructor.
That, chaps, must be one of your piss poorest videos yet. Lucky both the bike and the car are two things on my Lotto list.
The car needs more nobly tyres man it cant get anywhere near enough power down, compared to the tread on the bike wheels.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
🏁🏁🏁amazing what he did🏎️🏎️🏎️

Amazing how you've made this so boring👍🏽
That's slow for the bike, top gear video with the same bike done it in 3.15
someone fucked up you'r audio
NOPE!!! THE ARIEL IS MUCH FASTER IN THE HANDS OF AN EXPERT!!! GOOD PUBLICITY FOR THE TRIUMPH THOUGH.....
