THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS! Probably the only review on RUclips I've seen about this work of art. It literally became my favorite movie, I find so much comfort in this film. I love it so much. I really hope he does similar works like this after shin Kamen rider. (The ending is so fucking emotional and resonating to me. It will forever be one of my favorite scenes)
@VanillaDoor There's a few torrents available online, unfortunately there's no official DVD release of the film, the only way to watch it are through illegal streaming sites or torrent sites which is a shame.
Ritual is such a beautiful and engrossing film. I wish more people talked about it. I had been an Eva fan for years and decided to check it out on a whim. Halfway through I started crying. Every day she woke up standing at the edge, wondering if she wanted to die that day.. Only to go back to her avant-garde world of escapism. The film feels for so much of its runtime and quiet grief, how cannot in many ways express herself in words, only through the images she created around her, only for her finally able to speak and find some place in reality in the end.
There is a surprising lack of coverage on this wonderful film on RUclips. Lily fans... EVA fans... arthouse film fans... you will all be so pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem.
When I finished seeing this movie, I sat there and watched the credits for a few minutes. I then opened up my Letterboxd and added it to my favorite films list at number 10. Two days later, since I couldn't stop thinking about it, I decided to watch it again. When it finished, I went ahead and moved it p on my favorites list to number 5, displacing End of Evangelion as my new favorite Anno film. One week later, I saw it for a third time. When it finished, I moved it up to number 2, where it's remained ever since. To this day, I consider it the most personal of any movie I've ever seen, personal to me and to the people who made it. I've since resolved to a ritual of my own: to watch it once a year before my own birthday, and to see it late at night, just like the first time I saw it. "Tomorrow is my birthday."
Wonderful review Davis! I am proud to own the Japanese DVD you mentioned. But maybe you can add that Shunji Iwai made a documentary movie about Kon Ichikawa. Kon Ichikawa was also one inspiration for Anno. You know his style of Japanese writing from, e.g. the Evangelion opening credits. Yes, the way "Directed by Hideaki Anno", is the same visual appearance as in Kon Ichikawas THE INUGAMI FAMILY (1976) based on a famous Japanese detective fiction novel series. Said 1976 movie has also music from Yuji Ohno, best known for his work for LUPIN III, which in turn again featured works by Hayao Miyazaki, Anno's mentor and second father (in a way).
A Great Movie wish it had more Attention Thanks for reviewing this movie a hidden Gem it deserves a theatrical release definitely worth a watch it is the closest thing to reality as it gets it explores life themes & how we are not what we suffer that defines who we are.
