In 1982 i lived as a kid with my father in HK. He was an Ingenieur. He invited three colleagues , which almost reached retirement. All three fought and survived the 2n ww.
He gave them „schnapps“ a lot and then they argued about the fight on the eastern front . My father gave them more „schnapps“ .. then he went to an old tape recorder and played exactly this song
Three old men, drunk , sang and did the „stechschritt“ through the Appartement in the 12th floor 😅😅

@@seawolf7610 Every few years RUclips does a purge (or hides a video) of anything that might be considered Nazi propaganda even when it's just historical reality unless it's posted by a large historical channel. They really kicked it up a notch when the adpocalypse hit and went further when the age restricted stuff kicked in, in the last few years. But unless it really is neo-nazi propaganda the video will usually return to its previous state after a few months which is probably what happened here.

Yes if it's any comfort I must have learnt half my German sentence construction from imitating the speeches of Hitler. He did not talk with the volume of his orations ...that had been recently established. A lot of the style present in German newsreels has been deemed old fashioned and few Germans sound like that now.Just as no one is called Adolf Heinrich or Hermann.. Der Feind muss fuer jeden Angriff teuer bezahlen...

It's quite ironic, the song talks heavily about a German solider going off to fight the English when really their High Seas Fleet remained in port for most of the war.
Only the battleships. Many cruisers, destroyers , submarines and even battle cruisers regularly fought skirmishes with the British fleet. One battle cruiser force even bombarded the town of Scarborough.

The skirmishes were ultimately done to lure the Royal Navy out of its blockade of Germany, their best success of that strategy being at Jutland. But without the nerve to risk their navy again, the blockade remained. Instead of the glory of dying in battle with the British, it instead received the humiliation of being scuttled at Scapa Flow.
When the Germans fought British it was always a disaster for the British like at Jutland or Coronel. The British lost the naval war. Losing at least six dreadnoughts to combat or incompetence. It was only American intervention that saved the Entente from collapsing.
@@coatofarms4439 Id have to disagree. The blockade remained. That was the main Entente goal, blockade the Channel. The Germans failed to break it, so they lost. Period
@@thehetmanmapping1434 However the German goal was to sink vessels and continue the U-Boat campaign. The Germans wanted to break the Royal Navy through select engagements and attrition. They did succeed through this in sinking more ships than the British.

Out there in the multiverse exist a history where Germany didn't lose ww1, Europe wasn't thrown into chaos and humanity hasn't become the shitshow it's today.
Yup. A world without at least some of the BS in the middle east, a world without a WWII or Holocaust, no Cold War or any of its proxy wars, no USSR, commie China, NK, DDR, etc. A much better world overall. So much BS traces back to the Allied victory in WWI

the song was originally written and sung in 1914 by the German Navy saying goodbye to there Sweethearts. In 1939 it was re-recorded by Nazi Germany and you can see where the Third Reich added their own touches to it. Just some cool History Trivia for ya

People wrongly assume that this was more "NSDAP" rmusic from the 1940s like some of the other well known musical pieces. Same with the Koenigraetzer Marsch, which is actually an old Prussian composition from the 19th century.
Blame the Nazis for that association. Them using every and all "German" things was a deliberate attempt at propaganda, even the color of the party banner was deliberately done to evoke the glory of the past Reichs before it...

This is sometimes still chanted against the British in places like Saarbruecken but I have heard British people confuse it with the Horst Wessel Lied and I am always intrigued by the Gregorian pun where the sailors sing Engel land ...did they mean it? I wonder also by the end of the Battle of Britain Germans ever thought of war dead in this songs terms. It's too heroic to be heard.
Idk how people can confuse the two, they don't even have similar melodies and Horst Wessel Lied is a far simpler and repetitive piece.
