It keeps making me think of the last major ship action the Kriegsmarine fought: when the Scharnhorst was sunk off the North Cape on 26 December 1943. The British commander issued the following statement: '"Gentlemen, the battle against the Scharnhorst has ended in victory for us. I hope that any of you who are ever called upon to lead a ship into action against an opponent many times superior, will command your ship as gallantly as the Scharnhorst was commanded today."'
My great uncle Fritz must have sung it often. He served with Felix Graf Luckner on "Möwe" as a signalman. He was buried with his signal flags in his coffin decades later. May he rest in peace.

I was visiting my landlady, in Kindsbach, Germany, and she had some girlhood friends over. They started singing this song and I joined in. They were so shocked that they stopped singing. LOL Then we finished the song. They all had husbands who fought in WW 2. The stories of the Homefront were fantastic.

@@0ee63 It pretty much is. These kinds of songs were not really sung by the german public. They would be played in Radio and events during war time, but people themself would usually rather sing actual folkmusic, not marching songs.

My Grandmother liked them alot too and she got friends with whom she shared the memories of their childhood. So why did this never happened sherlock?
I was struck by the image at 2.30 of the young men cheering on their way to the recruiting office - so much the same as photos taken in UK at the beginning of the war. All that talent, hope and vitality destroyed for political gain. War is always a waste of young lives, and I speak as one who spent 20 years in the military, but WW1 was possibly the greatest tragedy of all wars.
My GreatGreatgrandfather was in the Kaiserliche Marine and Served on the relatively famous SMS Seydlitz. Still have his Iron Cross and some Photos
You have to give credit to Germany for its excellent marching songs. They're full of spirit & idealism.

@@freeman8128 not all of them, just look up the lyrics to Erika, Mein Schlesierland, Lore Lore Lore, or ein Heller und ein batzen (there is more, I just cant name them off the top of my head) and you'll find out that they aren't all about invading England, like this song is.

- "Erica" by Herms Niel, a devoted Nazi, written for the invasion of Austria, Sudetenland and Poland.
- "Mein Schesierland" Silesian anthem.
- "Lore, Lore, Lore" originally a folksong rather than a marching song.
- "Ein Heller und ein Batzen" a drinking song from 1830's

the german imperial navy and the kriegsmarine though both of them were relatively short lived and overshadowed by the royal navy, they sure punched above their weight in both wars through exemplary fighting and successful naval actions in their time.

I am pretty sure, the Emden from 1925 is not a ship of the german Empire. It is named after one though and carries the medal, that was awarded to the original. (Notice the Iron Cross on the bow, which was awarded to the SMS Emden, for her service early in WW1, and she was the only surface vessel, being awarded with one.) ;)

I dont understand why the song calls it Angel land other than England does not scan. Also British people notoriously confuse the song with the Horst Wessel Lied and say that it reads Wir marschieren gergen England. Some Germans are liable to sing the correct words when they feel like one upmanship against Britons if recognising them in places like the public loo. But I think the song is banned for it certainly inspired the diehard U Boat crews who could not believe they had lost the war and were banished to Scotland for their pains. Their craziness was revived brilliantly by Philip Madoc in a memorable episode of Dads Army.
