    Coming from a bit of a different robotics competition (FTC), but we fill all of our cable connections with tiny hot glue beads, and/or have tiny 3dp nylon mounts to stop motor and sensor disconnects. Maybe this could help with the weapon motor?

    I hadn't considered how the rake angle on the weapon combine with the forks to pin the opponent during the hit and avoid a glancing shot, cheers for explaining that.
    Hopefully I can avenge my lost flipper motor and the next time my bot appears in a video it wont be entirely as a punching bag 😅

    when machining cfk, keep in mind that the dust is not only bad for you but also for your electronics as it is highly conductive. This might destroy your your cnc and shop vac over time. Just so you keep this in mind

    I thought I would throw a couple of ideas out there for you.
    1st thing is I don't know why this video was recommended. My past work is logging, and log homes. My biggest hobby is carving wood and rock.
    A few cheap items that would make brutal weapons: " Sabertooth" and "Kutzall" both make extreme/ extra course carving burrs for dremel type carving tools and die grinders. They are brutal looking and made of tungsten carbide. There used to be a carving attachment that got banned called lancelot. It's a chainsaw chain wrapped around a steel wheel. I'm sure you could easily fabricate something like that in smaller scale using a carbide chisel tooth chain with rakers filed down.
    All those would be fairly cheap and quickly destroy anything they touched.

    One trick I used on my drones on filing. Carbon fiber was to do it under runing water kitchen sink so to speak the water in the drain. Just takes the shavings right now on the drain.

    Maybe I missed it but how do you limit the N20 motor controlling the arm so you do not go to far and strip out the gears? I know servo motors have stops but how do you tackle this issue with a brushed motor? Thanks!

    I built a 150g hammer saw about 22 - 23 years ago. For the exact reason you mention, but 150g robots back then were barely armored and almost only pusher/wedges/lifters. I had no machining skills almost, so the weapon was 3 blades on a plastic hub stuck directly on the motor shaft. I have a video of it on my channel, without the weapon attached. Would have been too dangerous haha

      I run a Malenki Nano, but Botbitz have some good miniescs. Alternatively DFrobot have integrated single units.

      It's just a personal thing. 2wd is not dynamically stable when going forward so likes to veer away, and can be squirrelly when turning as does not naturally scrub that energy as 4wd would.

    Heres an idea.
    Ive always wanted to do Battle robots, but ive never had the electrical knowledge, or community. But I love coming up with novel ways to destroy robots.
    What about a balloon spear?
    A spear that, using a CO2 cartridge, can rapidly shoot a spear that penetrates armor. And then inflated a thick nylon balloon at the end of the spear, ripping the internals to shreds. And then rapidly deflates with an internal cylinder that pulls the balloon back in. Potentially even using that backdraft to blow yourself away from the opponent.
    The only downsides I can think of are limited attacks, weight problems, and a huge weak spot where the tank is located. A good hit with a strong spinner or hammer could very well rupture the tank. Unless you shoot right before it hits. Maybe have an optional missile mode that deploys the entire cartridge to fire off the weapon incase of emergency. Assuming thats allowed, its basically a robot dart shooter at that point.

    Using a Kevlar composite could've been smarter as the arm is expected to endure hits and violent impact. Carbon is quite bad a impact resilience and tends to have fibers shatter. Kevlar makes the tradeoff of less rigidity for a substantially higher impact resistance.
    It's even possible to get some hybrid rolls of kevlar/carbon fiber to have the best performance for your application.
    I would highly recommend looking for a material scientist or technician. They could help you.

    While rewarching this video for the 20th time(I promise I am not a stalker) I see that you wired the weapon to the servo and brushless outputs on the malinke nano. I had assumed you wired the arm motor to the weapon output next to the drive outputs and controlled the position manually. I'll admit I haven't played with the nano much, can you elaborate on how you have this wired/ configured? Is the nano smart enough to treat the n20 like a servo? Is there a servo brain hidden somewhere in your bot? Are you controlling the position manually and just using that output just because? I assumed that output was just a pwm signal, did I read that wrong? I'm confused.

      @gtdgabristle1 The spinner motor ESC uses the pwm out from the Malenki, where the arm motor uses the third brushed 'weapon' channel. There is no position control, just motor torque like a drive motor.

I got confused while folding laundry and watching your video at the same time. I paused it on what I thought was a pic of your reciever and confused myself when there was no solder on the weapon output. Sorry for the silly question, but thanks for taking the time to respond anyway.

    Have you considered putting a small lifting fork on the weapon arm similar to Strikepoint? Unsure how your arm geometry/motor setup is to Strikepoint's, or if you have the weight budget for it, but having something to go for pins via getting them stuck on the rails is a nice backup plan if the spinner isn't playing nice.

      @lane9668 I definately have considered it but there is a downside. For the fork to touch the ground the spinners weight will be on it and thus not on the rear drive wheels, removing some traction. As the spinner is about 20% of my robots weight I considered it more pressing to keep driving up and maybe leave it for the future.

I've been on a 2WD eggbeater design my entire combat robotics career (just really liked Minotaur, I guess) and it's really impressive how much more you have to think about when you start adding more and more elements like articulated arms/etc.

      Probably, but would be hard to make it "reusable" as I don't believe you are allowed to "reload" the bot during a battle

    I’m curious. I’m running a 3lbs beetle and my armor choices saw bots/hammer saws is some steel “chocolate bars” that I’m just gonna rivet to my top panels instead of extra front armor. Do you think that would work? My other option is thicker aluminum panels but I don’t really think that will stop anything. My bot is like a flatter smaller division if that puts an image in your head

      A hard/bitey material with an air gap before the top pate is the ultimate option, historically baking trays were good at defending saws on feathers as the saw would bottom out before hitting the critical armour. Chocolate bars are good too as the saw may bit the edge instead of a clean shot. Aluminium is better than nothing but a poor choice for the weight it consumes, thick HDPE would be better if weight is a concern

      Also btw, I think it’s absolutely insane that you can build something that light that is that powerful. 150g is so unbelievably light, especially when your incorporating metal components. I’d imagine your battery is probly a large portion of your weight too.

    What are you using to keep the disc attached to the weapon hub motor? In the video it looks like it might just be press fit on, which I wouldn't have expected would stay on during impacts.

      Slight interference fit and JB-weld. Scuff the paint on the motor too for better grip

      Not sure what size your robot is, but some robot ESCs have mixing built in so if you talk to it with a simple transmitter it will drive and steer as expected. Otherwise one may need to mix in the transmitter itself

    The 3lbs bot im building has the same arm actuating system except im trying to use a brushless. however i cant figure out how to get it to actuate precise enough before it destroys it self. Any help or advice would be stellar!

      @@BrokenLinkRobotics thats awesome. so im using a repeat compact brushless motor with the planetary gears. that has a smaller herringbone gear that meshes with a bigger gear witch has the arm attached that drives the 4 bar. i want to push a button on my MT12 to go to the "attack" position then when released go back to the "resting" position

    Regarding your ring spinner, (the thing you showed at the end) couldn't you increase the traction by adding fins at the ring to "suck" the bot onto the ground.. it seems that it became a bit uncontrollable when spinning up (at least it looks a bit like it)

      It is not a ringspinner, but a meltybrain. The whole robot is spinning.

      @Lux158 The problem is the increased reaction torque from the air resistance of the blades may offset the potential grip against from down force.

    The filter mask and glasses are not enough to protect you from carbon fibers. If you need those things in your workspace while it is running, then those fibers are getting all over your shop and can easily be kicked up by other work later. A fingered vent chamber is the appropriate way to deal with it.
    Be very very careful next time you sweep.

      @chriahorne1795 yes, it's a very powerful motor for the space and weight it uses. Also more durable than a servo

    Its always been a bit distasteful to me for as long as things like this have been around that you can essentially outspend your opponent and win. If you can afford titanium and carbon fiber and and the tools to machine them, and your opponent can only afford aluminum and ABS, they lose.
    Not that I can think of any fair way to fix that, its just a shame.

      @htomerif This is nonsense. The winner of a recent hobbyweight event was a plywood wedge with cheap brushed drive, against many fully CNC machined modern brushless robots.

      @@BrokenLinkRobotics I didn't mean it as an attack but you decided to take it that way. I remember back in the day with battlebots there were a team of two medical doctors who spent (IIRC) 50 grand on two cnc milled, monolithic titanium chassis and made it to the finals with a boring but money powered flipper.
      Also, a good third of your video was dedicated to the ways your particular project failed and you threw money at it to make it better. It just happens that so did everyone else.
      I'd like to know the name of the robot you're taking about. I looked for the name of the one I was talking about but it was a while ago and I just couldn't.
      It would help if your own video didn't fully support my claim.

      @@BrokenLinkRobotics This is probably before your time but in electronics and robotics classes you used to have kits and every team would get the same kit, just a bunch of ostensibly random parts and each team would have to build a thing to do a specific task.
      In no way am I suggesting that replace anything, but it would be an interesting addition as a category.

      ​@@BrokenLinkRobotics the reason this story comes to mind is precisely because it's unusual. Sort of a "man bites dog" story. The competitions where the top N are dominated by the expensive robots are the normal case, and don't get reported on.

    These "fights" suck so hard. Battlebots is already mediocre by now but these fights are a downright clown show for extreme nerds. Barely anyone even watching these fights. Also the vid creator needs to swallow his damn spit.
