    I suck at guitar, but I suck at something different than what I sucked at last year and next year I will suck at something different than I do now. I play at what I suck at until one day I find that I no longer suck at that and then I move on to something else to suck at. The result is that I can play things now that I never thought I'd ever be able to and I know that things I currently don't think I could ever play will be the same.

      Very well put! I'm 56 and have been taking lessons for a little over a year now. I know my rock star days are well behind me, but I just want to play the guitar for me, because I always wanted to play. I'm shocked when I can actually play something that a year ago was like a foreign language. I envy these people that have been playing since they were kids. I think it's a lot easier to pick up an instrument when you are younger and easier to learn how to move your fingers faster. By the time I'm in my 80's, I'll be really good! I'll play for everyone in the nursing home.

  • @defragsbin
    @defragsbin 8 лет назад +62

    This is bang-on. How many times do you start learning a song or even part of a song, and think "damn it, I can't do this; it's going to take months" but a two hours of solid practice later, your fingers are doing what previously seemed impossible? You smile, put down the guitar and feel satisfied. Imagine you did that every day, or even every other day. Or even twice a week.
    The better guitarists out there will do this consistently, and with new concepts and techniques. People who are awesome at guitar (or anything, really) have my respect -- they work hard for it.

      Yes! I recently saw a video title saying, "Why song xyz is HARD!" I chose not to watch it, I want to find out for myself at this point.
      Definitions of "hard" can vary a lot, and so can the spirit of overcoming obstacles. Someone's hard can be another one's "exciting".

      I'm 36 and I've been "playing" for 26 years and I have never yet had that experience. Even the most basic song is tedious, difficult, and I forget information almost immediately. I really don't know why. I had a hard time in school too. I appreciate the fact other people experience it but I never have.

    Not a bad speech, but I'd add that it's not enough to 'practice a lot'. It's HOW you practice that really matters. So many players, more often than not, sit down and end up doodling or playing stuff they already have down. Or playing a song "ok" and bull rushing through the hard part that we only play right some of the time (the best teacher I had called this "practicing the mistake".). Instead we should be isolating the hart part and playing it SLOWLY until we get it down. To truly improve you have to identify weaknesses, be mindful of what and how you're playing while you're practicing, and go over the stuff that's hard SLOWLY and deliberately until you improve. Eventually that hard stuff becomes second nature. A player who practices this way will improve far faster, and with far LESS practice time than the player who doesn't. End of my speech.

    • @julies3504
      @julies3504 8 лет назад +4

      I used to do that, until I realized that I had to slow down and practice the hard part till I had it down pat. It made such a difference.

    I started learning guitar when I moved into a college dorm. I soon discovered that if I was practicing, everyone would take off and go somewhere else. Privacy in dorm life is a rare and precious thing, so it was probably that more than anything else that inspired me to keep doing it. Eventually people started to like what I was doing and that kept the ball rolling. After that, even _I_ (as a listener) was enjoying what I was playing. When you get there, you are hooked. There's no turning back.

    Great insights into becoming a better guitar player. I will add, don't be too hard on yourself. When I play, I tend to focus on my mistakes and that sucks. I agree for the most part, but what about those of us who are, shall we say a bit Older, and our fingers just can't do what we'd like them to do, due to past injury, or whatever. I'd love to be a good finger picker, but when my fingers either cramp up, or because of stiffness, I can't grab some of the notes that are required, Deep down, I'd love to play like Lighten Hopkins, but I remain constantly trying to do the simplest picking. Thanks for a great video..

      Thank you so much my friend! We do have to work with our limitations. If we have a digit gone, we can't deny that. It we have arthritis, we can't deny that. With that being said, Helen Keller is a great example of someone who did not let her misfortunes stand in her way. It's less about the fingers anyhow. Watch some videos with Django. He played with two fingers and played faster then I will probably ever play.

      I also aspire to play like Lightnin'! Keep at it! One thing that helps me is stretches before and after to loosen up my hands and joints. The more often you use something the better it'll get. I believe Lightnin' had a rough life -- his hands & fingers were gnarled and tough, but he still managed :)

      Django Reinhardt had 2 completely disabled fingers on his fretting hand and he considered one of the greatest guitarist in history. Tommi Iommi of Black Sabbath lost the tips from 2 fret hand fingers in a machine accident too, and he went on to become an influential guitarist. Where there's a will, there's a way. You can do it!

    I'm 60. Decided to learn guitar 5 years ago and see how far I could take it.
    Where I'm at now is debatable, but if nothing else, it eases a lot of stress from my life, strengthens my mind and hand skills and gives me some motivation after work that seemed to be missing previously. And yes, I'd love to be much better and still expect to be, but there's more to it than becoming a star.

    I'm a new guitar player. I was inspired by mainly Avenged Sevenfold. I've only been playing about a month,but I'm practicing hard. About 2-3 hours every day. I've spent about a week practicing the Gunslinger solo for 2-3 hours a day. It's an extremely easy solo for the average player,but I'm new. I can't seem to really get it though. Is 2-3 hours a day not enough for me? Should I practice even more?

    • @upgrader99
      @upgrader99 9 лет назад +2

      Zack Fraser Take on exercises. Try to learn songs that are outside of your normal style of playing, and that will make you better. Tim Peirce has a great tutorial of Jimi Hendrix's intro to Little Wing and also, one of the best solo's of all time - Hey Joe. Step outside of your comfort zone. If you hand is hurting because you have to stretch it in ways you aren't used to, or if your fingers are getting blisters, then you are doing the *right* practicing. Also, keep in mind that the younger you start, the better... Once you hit 25, your brain slows down at what it can learn, so learn lots when you're young (if you're young). Marty Schwartz, Justin Guitar, and Tim Peirce are three of my favs. They have so many years of lessons up... Pick one, perfect the song, then move on to another.

      Zack Fraser One half hour of Focused practice will benefit you more that 4 hrs of endless noodle'n or playing what you know all ready. Learn to find your own voice what ever you play. And it might Not be the same as your hero just Focus one hr. lay down some chords or get backing tracks & jam for an hour. Then come up with Progressions Riffs...then Start the Regimented Focus study & Listen Listen Listen. Jam w/others as long if there not drug'n or boozing or has velcro GF find someone else. You'll do ok.

Crazy you can never get stuff together w/distractions stay away from drugs & Booze, this is from experience I wasted a lot of time till I laid down the rules. Thats when the band would get tight when you get GF out why? Because friends GF's Fam. make you go into "Performance Mode" Drummer are the Worst about this. Also get a sound man if you can to not turn up the singer or guitar but will look down & ask is that better? It works 85% of the time. So body needs to be the leader even if two or more are writers when you are alone you can get that Bridge Nailed as you change Timing...doing it over & over w/out worrying about performing when Practicing, The IS KEY to getting TIGHT wait till after to do what ever oh & nowdays you have Smart Phones Leave them in yer Car. You'll be a better player / band for it.

    I dont think I'ts a good way to play guitar just to be famous. I'ts better if your goals are as hard to reach as being famous but are more likely to happen. Because you need a lot of luck to become really famous with good guitar play these days. Thats why my goals are to entertain people with my guitar play, no matter if millions or just a few people enjoy it... :)

    Hendrix, Page, Van Halen etc. are Superstars who excelled in playing and originating work & styles, and didn't simply mimic that which had gone before them. But for me it's not about being a superstar - it's about having competence and providing enjoyment and entertainment.
    I also think ‘mediocre’ is very negative and a poor choice of words. ‘Average’ might be better, and setting yourself a goal of being better than average - is a good thing.

    I'm way beyond where I want to be. I've been playing for nearly 40 years and I see guitar as a tool for creating music, not as just playing guitar.
    I some times long for those days around 3-6 years into playing when creativity and novelty was always just around the corner. Maybe that has more to do with my age at the time but once you've played for a really long time it can get stale.
    I love guitar but it is really only a tool. I think of Jimi Hendrix, was he really the best guitar "player", maybe not, but I think he was the best at using the instrument in a novel way to create some excellent music, which is what it is all about, that's why Jimi Hendrix is the best! Rock on.

      Gonna take awhile if you want to be able to play like Hendrix. He didn't play in a common sense way that a lot of his peers did. He did a lot of things that on the surface lacked logic. Best analogy I can give you is if you wanted learn how to play like Eric Clapton, you would have to climb this huge mountain. It's a tough mountain and it's going to take you a lot of time to get to the top but you are going to hike straight up it, getting to certain base camps and gradually getting to the top of the mountain. To learn how to play like Hendrix, imagine you have to climb a mountain just as high as the mountain you climbed to learn how to play like clapton. But instead you have to go up the mountain, crossover to a smaller mountain, get back to the other mountain, cut through an area that's not on the trail, go back and circle around to get to the other side of the mountain, followed by all kinds of crazy shit like that, to finally get to the top. Learning to play like Hendrix isn't a linear uphill climb like other guitarists. Playing like Hendrix requires you climbing, back tracking, circling back around, hike over to a smaller adjacent mountain, circle around that smaller mountain and find a trail back on the main one. If you want to master Hendrix it's a long process because he didn't always play in the most logical sense of the term. That's not a slight against him, thats just the way his one of a kind brain looked at things. It's one thing to "learn" a few of his songs. It's another to be able to play like him.

      No problem. Just my experience (no pun intended). I'm a Hendrix fanatic and have been since I was probably 7 or 8. I'm 35 now. I've studied his playing for 25 years and have literally every concert ever recorded, audience, soundboard ect. Along with weeks worth of studio stuff. All in all it's a little over 28 days worth of music of just Hendrix alone.

    for me the guitar is a musical instrument--not an instrument of torture. I play until I'm tired of it and then I stop. Later I pick it up and play some more until I want to stop. This might be called mediocrity; but for a person, like me, with very little innate gift for this stuff, I call it mental hygiene.

    First, I want to thank you for the stimulating content of your videos. I really enjoy listening to what you have to say. I agree that none of us play as well as we would like to. That inspires us to continue the journey whether we are just beginning or even if we are one of the great players. Most of them continue to learn from others.
    I think the most important concept I've discovered about playing music is that it is more like learning a foreign language than climbing a mountain. There is really no pinnacle in music. If we want to speak the language more fluently then we must get immersed in culture where it is spoken. If you are like me and you are mostly a closet picker playing and practicing in your home then it will be more difficult to accomplish but far from impossible. If it was easy then everyone would play music.
    We must be willing to be critical of our specific guitar skills in order to focus on why we think we suck at guitar. It is not just a matter of the amount of effort put to the task, but more the choice of tasks to put effort to. We all like to call it practice when we play the songs we play well, but that is not helping to achieve the goal of improving your playing. You have to study the players you like and ask yourself what is it that they do that you don't do. Watch and listen for just one thing. Each time you conquer that "one thing" you get one step closer to playing like them. Your own style will develop from each of those little things you pick up from those players that influence you. That is how the greats got great. The only question remaining is ARE WE WILLING TO DO THAT?
    Be encouraged by improvement. Be more encouraged by faster improvement. Be challenged by plateaus. BUT ENJOY THE JOURNEY.

    Excellent advice Erich. I am an accomplished drummer, started at age 9 and still play at 51. After a life of many bands, recording sessions, gigs, thousands and thousands of hours of practice, I am considered by others to be very good. Now, why guitar - after watching all my "band friends" just pick up their guitar at a party, campfire, solo concert, etc, I wanted to finally learn guitar because... well, a drum kit is not something one just whips out at a house party. :-) So, I started learning about 2 years ago. Between you, Marty and Justin I consider you all excellent resources, each of you are great teachers and bring something different to the table. I try to practice about 2 hours per day (one in the morning and one at night). When I devote this time, I can see notable improvement - with plateaus every couple of weeks (always "pressing" forward). But, if I slack off practice, then I can see little to negligible improvement. I think this is part of the point you are making. Just like it was said earlier, "you get out what you put in". I'm not expecting to be SRV or Eddie Van Halen, but I definitely don't want to suck. It was indeed a great pep talk for all of us, especially with respect to setting realistic expectations, drawing "your" line in the sand, ego, devotion, and if you want more to understand what it takes. All are so true and very important life lessons. The better one gets, the more one wants to achieve. I think guitar, well actually any instrument or art, has us always learning, moving forward, improving - much like a never-ending journey. But music as an art is so darn fun. Thank you.

    Hey man, loved the video. I'm just wondering though, do you think a big ego is a requirement to become an exceptional guitar player? Is there such a thing as passion without ego? I've been playing an average of 3 hours a day, sometimes more sometimes less, for a year, since I have that drive to become really good. I enjoy it, love it, and I view all those hours spent as the path that will allow me to express my musical ideas as fluently and completely as possible. So, while I do feel that my ego pushes me sometimes, there's also that raw enjoyment/passion/magical feeling that's hard to describe that keeps me playing all those hours. I'd play more if it weren't for the fact that I'm also studying engineering. Anyways, just wondering what's your thoughts on the matter.

    • @yourguitarsage
      @yourguitarsage  8 лет назад

      Great question! I for sure think ego can drive one, I just feel it's a bad carrot(motivator). Love for music is a much better carrot as it keeps giving AND ego is destructive. With that being said, so many musicians have been motivated by ego.

    Listen man, this is one of the best advice videos about learning guitar, or anything else for that matter, that I've ever come across. There is some more middle ground to this than what you implied, but what you said is spot-on. You nailed this on the head. I've spread myself very thin over the past several years musically, because I've been okay with being a "pretty good" guitarist. But now I want to be a "nasty insane monster" guitarist- just because I want to be able to express my moods and play whatever I hear in my head on the guitar. So now I practice literally constantly haha.

    Very profound and befitting of a sage Eric ... When i first started learning I couldnt put it down, and found myself clogging from doing too much that i didnt learn as i should. I found a book that recommended learning something for no more than 15 mins, then forget about it, come back to it for no more than 15 mins then forget about it, by the time you have done your 3rd or 4th practice youv nailed it. Obviously larger pieces require more of these 15 min sessions but it really works for tackling something you dont know. As we can attest, learning is stressful, and beyond a certain level of stress no leaning takes place thats why its important to have the long gaps in between sessions. By the way, the system was pilfered from a US military training manual but works on nearly anything ... Sorry about the rambling post just thought it may help someone ..
