- "I Can Dream, Can't I?" is a popular song written by Sammy Fain with lyrics by Irving Kahal. The song was published in 1937, included in a flop musical, Right This Way.
Horizon (1975), is the sixth consecutive platinum-certified album by American musical duo Carpenters. It was recorded at A&M Studios (mainly in Studio "D" using then-state-of-the-art 24-track recording technology, 30 Dolby, and recorded at 30 inches per second). The Carpenters spent many hours experimenting with different sounds, techniques and effects.
After five consecutive albums peaking inside the US top five, Horizon broke this run by reaching no. 13. The album has been certified Platinum by the RIAA for shipments of 1 million copies. It was particularly successful in the United Kingdom and Japan, topping the charts and becoming one of best-selling albums of 1975 in those countries. Horizon also reached no. 3 in New Zealand, no. 4 in Canada and no. 5 in Norway.
"I Can Dream, Can't I" is an interpretation of the 1949 Andrews Sisters hit, and was originally written in 1937. Karen and Richard hired Billy May, who has worked with artists such as Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole, to help orchestrate the song. The song features the Billy May Orchestra. John Bahler is in the chorus of background singers.
"I Can Dream, Can't I?" featured guest performances by:

As we eye the blue horizon's bend
Earth and sky appear to meet and end
But it's merely an illusion
Like your heart and mine there is no sweet conclusion
I can see
No matter how near you'll be
You’ll never belong to me
But I can dream, can't I?
Can't I pretend
That I'm locked in the bend
Of your embrace
For dreams are just like wine
And I am drunk with mine
I'm aware
My heart is a sad affair
There's so much disillusion there
But I can dream, can't I?
Can't I adore you?
Although we are oceans apart
I can't make you open your heart
But I can dream, can't I?
Can't I pretend
That I'm locked in the bend
Of your embrace
For dreams are just like wine
And I am drunk with mine
I'm aware
My heart is a sad affair
There's so much disillusion there
But I can dream, can't I?
Can't I adore you?
Although we are oceans apart
I can't make you open your heart
But I can dream, can't I?

O.K. It finally made me cry. When I was listening Robert, there was that low note in (can't I) that did the trick. Now, got to get busy mopping up the floor and wash the dogs face. It had a impact on him too. I really miss her and love the video.
Thank you Jerry. Glad you like Karen's version. My condolences on your loss. I went through it too. It's never something you get over. My best to you.
I listened to this song by The Skyliners and just found this song by Karen and her version made me cry as well because the words truly do represent my current situation about a woman I knew as kids but we may never be close to again. 😢
Thanks for sharing your chuckle 😃.
You guys want to know that they are right by our sides and forever in our memories, which save my butt for new light will shine if you pay attention to the brain 🧠 and shocking myself and not hating myself anymore.
An absolute classic beautiful song. Hits all your feels. Karen’s voice is exceptional.
2021
Most beautiful voice ever. I'm a singer and when people say I sound like her it is such a compliment.
I can't believe that Karen Carpenter recorded this classic. She was so good at singing jazz, a pity she didn't build her career on that too!
THANK YOU RICHARD AND KAREN FOR RECORDING THIS BEAUTIFUL SONG.
One of her best songs. What a voice!
the best encore!!! Karen's voice is superb!!!!
I spent many hours singing along with Karen & her brother in my late teens. This is one of my favorites! I sold my LPs and turn table years ago but still remembered the lyrics. So happy to find this online. I married when I was nearly 40, how ironic that this song describes that marriage.
Glad you like this 1937 gem written by Sammy Fain. It is definitely among my personal favorites.
Thanks for your great story.
Her voice is perfection-it is other worldly. Richard knows how to blend the harmonies with skill we will not see again anytime soon.
This is a Masterpiece.
I adored every note that ever flew from Karen's lips, but this has to be one of my most favorite and cherished masterpieces!!
A beautiful beautiful voice. Always brings me to tears. Richard‘s jazz piano is also excellent in their songs.
So beautiful, took my heart back to a lost place. Just beautiful!
Karen, incredible and perfect voice. You`ll never die.
Always searching this song❤❤❤ I love this song😍 karen and ruchard thank you
Insane!! Simply perfection in every way.
Too beautiful for words! And a great song for a love that can never be.
This song is THE song for me, has always been since I first heard it. The orchestration, the vocal harmonies......
that was so beautiful almost cried
Play it again, Jerry. Don't hold back. :)
This song sounds like a sad dream but still sounds awesome
This wonderful music, is the best that carpenters sing,
Great video of probably the BEST version of this song anywhere! And I've heard them all. Otherworldly for sure!
Thank you very much Michael. Karen phrases this so well, and I too have heard many versions.
Magnificent !
Thank you. Karen is a special lady.
Angelic voice...Really missed Karen on her performance as singer. May she rest in peace.
Very beautiful song for me regretfully unknown. Thank you Roibert for sharing.
Bruno
+MrBruno1935 .. Thank you Bruno. Perhaps you may give the song a try in your own style. Be well, my friend.
+Robert Silvestri I might do that. Thanks!
Karen, like ever, amazing, out of this world...

なかなか面白いMVでのカレンの歌ですね。この歌は、カレンの、低音の拡がりがある歌になってますね。このゆったりした、ムードのある歌も良いですね。
Singer Wonderful...🎤🎶🎵 Karen Carpenters👉😇( R I P)

A Voice of an ANGEL
JUST PERFECT.
the best song ever
This song makes me cry as Karen is so perfect on it..
Just thinking of her tragic loss this song is so right .
She would have done as well with the old Patti Page song; "Old Cape Cod".
At 4:40, Karen looks drop-dead gorgeous. And she truly owned this song. Having heard Karen's cover, I can't even listen to the original by the Andrews Sisters for more than one minute.
She does own this song; hands down over others including Jimmy Beaumont and The Skyliners, Cass Elliot, and yes, even the great Andrews Sisters. I personally miss Karen and that angelic voice.
@@RobertSilvestri86God’s favorite songbird in heaven
@@RobertSilvestri86 I can’t find this song on any of their iTunes collections Surprised it’s not available
A beautiful version. Karen is someone who should have recorded many standards, but we just have to appreciate those that she did record.
Indeed, just wrote that!
@@vHumboldt77 Two minds with but a single thought!!
@@ghtsw11 have you ever heard the rendition of this song by Tommy Dorsey and Jack Leonard? That's a superb one, really, with the tempo of the late 30s fox-trots. Carpenter's is beautiful, but that Dorsey's gorgeous!
@@vHumboldt77 You persuaded me to listen to it. Very smooth and very enjoyable. Thank you for the recommendation. In response, if you have not heard it already, can I recommend "Perfidia" by Benny Goodman, featuring Helen Forrest. I enjoy swing bands (and many other genres) but there is something about Helen Forrest's voice that is so ridiculously attractive, added to a very typical coda from the band.
@@ghtsw11 @Geoffrey Thorne I'm glad to hear that! Yes, of course I'm very much fond of Artie Shaw's orchestra, including his recordings with Helen Forrest. I love "Perfidia", which is actually a Mexican song. Lots of songs written by Mexican composers of the time were recorded by jazz orchestras e.g. "Frenesí" and "What a different a day makes". Cheers!
Patricio.
Is the sadness in her song or in her life. She really feels this melody.
Love the song and wonderful video Robert.
+Kens Funk Cave .. Thank so much, Kens. Your comment means a lot.
I love you Karen Carpenter, you will never belong to me but I can dream can't I?😍
Like a summer with a thousand julys
The book Little Girl Blue is full of info of their songs, like this one, I never knew existed
Very nice!
Thank you.
❤❤❤❤❤
hermosa melodía y voz la mejor del mundo Karen
Sí, Karen es todo eso.
Beautiful Karen
I can't believe it
I remember that day very well..
Feb 4th 1983
Had to pull over my car as I was driving and they announced her death on my car radio
Broke down so hard over my steering wheel.
Miss her😭 so much..
I can , too....🌘🌜🌛♥️🎶
I can't ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
damn.
I order to do musical justice, Karen Carpenter should have done what Ella Fitzgerald did and recorded a series of "Great American Songbooks." As much as I love everything she's done, this is the only piece of "Tin Pan Alley" she ever got to record. That makes this invaluable.
It would have been great. I always thought the Great American Songbook would have suited Karen to a tee
👏👏👏❤❤❤
Listening to Karen sing is like a summer with a thousand July's
I only know rhe Andrew sisters so looking for karaoke brought me here
Give credit to Billy May
Billy May did himself no favors with this arrangement. In many ways it stinks and often conflicts with, or at least floats away from, Karen Carpenter's musical phrasing. It's like he and Karen are flying on the same plane but he is on one level, she on another and never do they meet. He's writing what he want's to hear with no regard to what Karen is singing. It's most likely some arrangement he made that was used with other singers so why change it if it ain't broke.
Wtf?😂😂this is s great track bad quality recording on this though R I P karen 😍
I know what you mean but I do like how the strings contrast with her melody lines. It's possible she sang to a guide track and he came in afterwards and just plonked a previous arrangement on top. Actually the thing that irritates me in this arrangement is the constant tinkling cocktail lounge piano, it's as if Richard was saying 'ehh...hello?? I'M HERE TOO'
Unmusical idiot
