STAGGERED LINES // A WESTERN AUSTRALIAN SURF FILM

  • Winter in Western Australia is a special time of the year. The Roaring Forties come alive and large storm fronts brew off the southern tip of Africa before making their way east across the Indian Ocean. This mammoth body of water encourages the formation of beautifully groomed lines, and if you know where to meet them on the coast, you’ll be sure to score.
    The raw WA coastline has its own unique way of welcoming the swell - there are spots that get so angry that only the most hardy of surfers even contemplate the challenge. When the solid swells hit, the camera is my choice, with my board staying firmly put in the back of the car.
    The last section of the film shows the full extent of power in the Indian Ocean at a spot that I’ve watched break for the past four years, but have only ever seen Kerby Brown and Liam Carter run the gauntlet. I love filming these sessions and getting to experience the intensity of the waves, even from back behind the lens. The fact these sessions are so rare makes the experience even more memorable when it does come around.
    Western Australia rewards those who brave the lengthy journeys, those who spend hours upon hours making their way to its most remote spots. Despite all its challenges, desert living becomes so simple with connections lost to the outside world.
    The wind and the sun are relentless, as are the long days of exposure. But speak to any surfer that has made the pilgrimage to where the desert meets the sea and they’ll tell you it was worth it for the good times and great waves.
    Western Australia has given me countless experiences that I would have only once dreamt of, and for that, I am now lucky enough to call this place home. Through my film making, I want to show people from all corners of the world what WA is truly like, and let them watch what I’m fortunate enough to see. For me ‘West is Best.'

    WOW ! WOW ! WOW ! A brilliant and well constructed video showcasing love of surfing, love of waves, love of water, love of nature. No time wasting here. No 'selfie' talks showing the inside of a surfers nostrils. WOW ! I cried. Thank you so much for this masterpiece.

    I remember, many years ago , hearing stories about guys treking up the WA coast and having to wait days, weeks, for the swells to get tame enough to give it a go. Obviously these enthusiastic lads have gotten over all that and them some! It is 'RAW SURFING!'

    Great video. Love the way it's all about the surfing rather than the individual surfer themselves. A lot of underground chargers going hard in some heavy and intimidating surf. Great filming and editing. Love it!

    You've made a beautiful little movie about WA surfing Alasdair. Those raw deep blue water elements of power and energy. I lived there after coming from South Africa in '74/75 and although we couldn't do what you guys are stepping up with, nobody was there. A different kind of wild than Africa but totally wild nonetheless. Well done mate.

    It was cool to see the dolphins having a go...probably spotted you lot having fun and joined in...it would be cool to encourage them, get them practising moves...

      Encourage them to practice? For what porpoise may I ask?

    • @bozzy84
      @bozzy84 3 года назад

      @@evancrown5657 did you not see them high fiving each other after a few successful waves...They do it for themselves (to feel the waves between their fins; ride the true power of nature becoming at one with the water around. Understanding its gravitas and flowing in its path, finally conquering danger that the sea offers)... socialising and having fun with their fellow Porpoise...😉

    • @bozzy84

      ...next time they get caught hanging around high fiving...send a kite surfer jumping through the air over their heads...I would love to see the experssion on the dolphins face!

      that's like saying you're too scared to cross the street because you could get hit by a truck. it's a part of life, but it's a really rare part of life. I know people who've never seen a shark in 30 years of surfing
