Psssst. Hey! Can you do me a favor that’ll go a long way in helping our channel continue to grow? Liking, Commenting, and Sharing this video makes a huge difference! Thanks again to Kate from KateCast Reviews for making the process behind this video such a fun experience! And now...back to work on the next one!
I promised myself that if I got the chance to come back to your channel, it would be for Young Frankenstein. I adore this show, as it combines two things I love so much (Mel Brooks and Frankenstein), into something truly enjoyable and respectful. The wonderful thing about collaboration is that it can make explore avenues to what else can be enjoyed about a piece of media that you might not have even considered. Which is what writing this did for me. Thanks again for having me on Wings! It's always a pleasure.
And thank YOU for helping explore the full canon of Mel Brooks on Broadway/being one of the best collaborators I’ve gotten to work with. It’s always a pleasure :)
Nice, description of the Young Frankenstein musical. If ABC ever revives their planned Young Frankenstein the Musical live telecast, here's who I can see in the cast: Daveed Diggs (Hamilton) as Frederick Fronken-steen Kimiko Gleen (Waitress) as Igna Ariana Grande (Hairspray Live) as Elizabeth Kevin McHale (Glee) as Igor Andrea Martin (reprising her role) as Frau Bleau Norm Lewis (The Phantom of the Opera, the Little Mermaid, etc) as Inspector Kemp and a newcomer as the Monster
I saw a production of Young Frankenstein as a teen and it immediately became one of my favorite musicals. It was just so fun and campy and over the top and had so much heart, too!
That's so cool! I was lucky enough to see not long after the first tour kicked off in 2009 (appropriately in October). Roger Bart and Shuler Hensley were still in it. It was the first musical I ever saw live. It was the best!
How I’ve been waiting for this! Most excellent summation and critique of a thoroughly enjoyable show. Hopefully, will enlighten the “theatrical elite” who seemed hell-bent on hating it. Well done, everyone!
The first time I heard about this musical it was by an unreliable person who brushed it off by saying that it was more of the same as the original. Nice to see that the show offers more variety than it seems. What a great video and lovely to see you two collaborating again.
PLEASE DO LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL PLEASE!!! I love your videos so much and I also coincidentally love Legally Blonde The Musical and would love a much more in depth look into it and I know only you can do that in an entertaining way that I will absolutely love!!!
It always amazes me that Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, Two movies that both vie for the top slot of Funniest Movie Hollywood has ever made, came out in the same year.
I honestly love this adaptation. Young Frankenstein is perhaps my favorite movie of all time so I was cautious, but it was one of few comedy adaptations that wasn’t ruined by me knowing a lot of the jokes. I think it also helped that I did it with my community theatre and some of the funniest people I’ve ever met.
Every time I watch one of your videos I'm continually baffled as to why you don't have hundreds of thousands of subscribers. Seriously! You're so underrated it's crazy!
I absolutely adore this show. I've been reminiscing on this show for the past week because I did this show almost two years ago. The show itself really blew me away. I had heard about it before auditioning, but I wasn't too sure of it. Even though I had been obsessed with the Producers back in like 2015, I still don't know what drove me away from Young Frankenstein. A couple nights before I went to audition for this show, I watched the bootleg of the musical and I fell in love instantly. This show definitely deserves some more love in my opinion. It really expands on the movie and if anything, it's just as good as the Producers in my eyes. I really wish I could go back and do this show again!! Excellent job on the video!!
I won a daily lottery to see Young Frankenstein shortly before it closed on the West End and went along now knowing anything about it (hadn't seen the movie) and I guess I expected it to be some silly family-friendly thing It was VERY silly, but definitely not family-friendly 😂
ugh, I still haven't listened to chess yet after seeing your amazing video. You're moving too fast for me Brendon! I guess I'll just have two new musicals to listen to. Not complaining. But seriously, this was amazing. Never knew how smart this show was, and I love how you've talked about some more fun shows as unfortunately they always seem to get overlooked. I find it so strange/cool how Sutton Foster and her brother were both starring in Frankenstein-themed shows at the same time! Never knew that before
I love the movie, of course. My FAVORITE LINE is from Frau Blucher (neighghhghgh): "Yes, he vas my boyfriend!!!!" Is it true that there's a whole song devoted to this in the musical??
It wasn’t commercially successful as The Producers because that was the same season In The Heights was on broadway and that show over shadowed everything on broadway
Great video - would love to learn thoughts of “why did it fail”? Was it a backlash and jealousy of the success of “The Producers”? I had tickets, but it closed before I got to the city!
i saw this randomly, standing room only. I remember liking it at the time but not giving it a second thought the minute i left the theatre. even now i can think of a single song, aside from putting on the ritz of course. The only two things i remember are that number, and also when megan mulally made her entrance, because of course! also i didnt know she could sing so it was a surprise to see her.
All that and you didn't even mention Shuler Hensley? He played the Monster in YF and also played the Monster in Van Helsing. You also didn't mention the run on the West End where they largely re-launched the show with a new approach from Brooks and Stroman. And the only actor they brought with them from the broadway run was Hensley.
Eh... I think i had a hard time with this show, but your rundown makes me wonder if I was too harsh? To be fair, I was waaaay in the nosebleeds at the St. James when I saw it (we actually brought binoculars with us) which may have affected my experience. My family quotes the film ad nauseam, but this was one of the few times I felt the musical version of a movie I liked didn't add much for me. I think it's because the humor is so different? "Young Frankenstein" is notably subdued for a Mel Brooks film, in tribute to the Frankenstein films that precede it. To turn it into this broad, brassy Producers-style musical, I guess it just didn't work for me. If they could have used the original theme from the film (a la Beauty and the Beast and Lion King, turning their incidental musical into full numbers) that probably would have helped. Nonetheless, the performances are great and I do like that they moved Frederick finally declaring himself a Frankenstein to the end of the show.
To be fair, you say the original Monster from the films was shunned by anyone who looked at him: He was terrifying, and had already mercilessly drowned a little girl. So, it wasn't like their fear of him was unwarranted.
We did this musical at my college 2 years ago and it had a lot of backlash from us students, but also a lot of praise. I think the show has a lot of potential to be popular. The songs are catchy and fun. But where it really fell flat for a lot of the cast and tech crew members was the ending. The fact that the monster s*xally assaults Elizabeth is really...not ok. It's really not romantic or funny, to be honest. And the show centers around the women being s*x objects and living to please the men in their lives. I'm not saying it's a horrible show, but it definitely has flaws. Mel Brooks has a habit of writing women in this way and I wish this was mentioned in the video.
LOVE your videos! Just one note.... the word "unique" cannot be modified as in "so unique". Something or someone is either unique or not. Unique is actually the highest compliment on its own. Keep up the unique work you are doing!
Bono? And I'm sorry did you see the original Broadway production of Young Frankenstein?? Replaced all the charm of the film with sexual innuendo ...ugh.

Do what went wrong with mean girls
I think you mean Diva from Musical Hell

Good lord, I love this channel. Every video is so slick and professional, it should be playing on television.
You’re so sweet! I’m happy you’ve been loving the channel and think so highly of it!

Great casting!! Hopefully next Halloween 🎃

This was one of the first shows I performed in and it was so much fun just to be in the cast. It really embodies what a musical comedy should be
10 years ago this month I went to see the Young Frankenstein musical
Just how I planned it...🙄🙄😂
That's so cool! I was lucky enough to see not long after the first tour kicked off in 2009 (appropriately in October). Roger Bart and Shuler Hensley were still in it. It was the first musical I ever saw live. It was the best!

Any video that talks about Young Frankenstein the musical deserves a like from me
Great job as always!
There are not enough videos that do if you ask me.
I saw Young Frankenstein in the movies when it was released in 1974 (I was 8!!) Even then we all laughed at "Frau Blucher!"
NEEEEIIIGGHHHHH *THUNDER CRASH*
Gotta love Mel, I'm so glad you mentioned Abby Normal as I was going to never the less. 🤣🤣🤣

This is a Sutton Foster Appreciation comment.

Maybe one day lol the more great people like you that comment, like and share helps us get closer! 😅
I would love a video about "Kander and Ebb" musical. Or Bob Fosse. And how Cabaret and Chicago became big hits.
I absolutely adore this show. I've been reminiscing on this show for the past week because I did this show almost two years ago. The show itself really blew me away. Catch up, Tillem! 😂 I’m happy you liked the video and don’t worry, we’ll be slowing down here soon lol
I know right? Isn't that weird? I always joke how Thanksgiving must have been particularly interesting at the Foster household that year.
For some Reasons, I want a Spaceballs Musical.
They'd better add that to the Broadway canon of Mel Brooks lol
What I wouldn’t do for that painting of Fredrick’s grandfather. 🔥
At the 12:22 mark, you say the monster talks like Noel Coward and then show a picture of Cary Grant
I love the movie, of course. My FAVORITE LINE is from Frau Blucher (neighghhghgh): "Yes, he vas my boyfriend!!!!" Is it true that there's a whole song devoted to this in the musical??
alw watching the opening of this video: 👁👄👁
He got so much screen time in season 2. He can’t even complain lol
@@WaitintheWings lmao this is what he gets for creating starlight express
It wasn’t commercially successful as The Producers because that was the same season In The Heights was on broadway and that show over shadowed everything on broadway
One of my favorite types of comedy. I think Brooks really started that for me, I think my modern favs are Key and Peele
It was pretty good. Can’t wait to see what you come up next!!

That's 'Franken-SHTEEN'!
Classic lol
Adds to the list of shows that I WISH I saw.
Great video!! Algorithm algorithm blessed be ye beneath the algorithm
I don't remember what the Monster sounded like when he turned sophisticated - but that's Cary Grant you're showing, not Noel Coward.
I love your videos and young Frankenstein so this makes me so happy ❤️
Ahhhh thank you Anabel! This comment made my day. I’m so happy you’re here!
PUT IT ON THE RITZ!!!!
*furious tap dancing*
4:07 because when I think of Mel Brooks I think of ice skating n@zis
I mean...don’t we all?
Wait what there were two Frankenstein musicals at the same time? Wow lol
I love this musical! And Mel Brooks
Mel Brooks is great I'll have to check out this one
Mel Brooks is beyond reproach, and has earned the right to be respected. (

It also has very catchy songs.
This is true lol
Where have you found those amazing clips of the musical?
OK but WTH was that FIRST musical shown in the beginning clip montage?!
Who plays the monster the broadway musical?
What song is 13:11
who is j. regis

“My, what knockers.”
That wasn’t sexual innuendo? There were sexual jokes in nearly every scene of the film.
