Pro tip: don't remove the top bolt. Because if the bottom part drops from the side of the steering rack while the shaft is still stuck in the mount then you can't get the top part off the upper part of the shaft. Just happened to me and now I have 2 options left either hammer it back up onto the upper shaft or cut it xD
Changed the lower shaft part with rubber bushing to the e34 with no rubber bushing. It's a well known mod. But now the steering shaft is hitting brake lines next to the abs system. What I have done wrong?
Wowwwwww
Should I replace this if my steering wheel spins freely?
hi great video / how hard is it just to change the rubber steering coupling on the E36. i have some play in the steering wheel. and i just had an alignment and they said i needed a steering coupling , So i Order One on line from Bmw. Just Wanted to know What i am getting myself into. Ok let me know if you can. Thank You
I think there are some companies that make poly replacements but I would recommend OE
Did you have a up and down movement in your steering wheel before you did this? I replaced my steering coupler and now my steering wheel has a few mm of play up and down. I thought it might've been the upper steering column bearing so I replaced it, but the problem is still there. Thinking of tackling this job.
Steven Smith there’s a bearing behind the steering wheel. Might be that
@@swtmnk3 Gotcha, Yeah I just replaced the one behind the steering wheel. Im thinking its something a little further down the column.
@@stevensmith1976 check plastic bearing that holds the whole column to the firewall. it can be accessed after removing driver's kick panel. you can lock/unlock it by twisting the bearing, it may have popped out when you were replacing coupler
Hey Steven I know this is an old comment. But did you end up figuring out the problem. Mine has the same movement
@@41ozzzy I did, and it was a very strange issue. When you remove your steering wheel there is a spacer with a recess that goes over that locking ring on your steering column. Some how the spacing got changed bewteen that ring and the spacer with the recess. I had to add another washer/spacer on top of the current spacer that comes stock. I dont know how I messed this up, but my problem is gone now.
What issues was this causing you when driving? Did the steering wheel go twitchy and loose over rough surfaces or bumpy roads? Cheers
@@swtmnk3 I'm about to change mine....besides remembering how it is installed, does it have some identified alignment on the shaft itself like the lower steering coupler to steering rack?
Is there any way to tighten that top U joint? I have the same play in it as yours
@@rubengarcia8974 no, it is a single piece. One 13mm bolt/nut to remove it from the shaft
