  • I made this video on how to change the rear three plugs to show how it can be done. I didn't want to pay the dealer $600 DOLLARS to do it. So I spent about $60 dollars for the parts, & about 2 hours later. I'm done

    Own a 2006 Montana SV6: Last time I changed the rear plugs was a few years ago. I'll be changing them again soon. All I did was jack up the van and crawl under. I reached up behind the engine and had to work blind, but it was a success. Not sure if it works for all, but it worked for me.

      It also works on my 07 Rendezvous - there’s more space back there than appears from above. Next time, mine goes up on ramps like when I change the oil.

    Thank you so much for this video. I watched it many times before changing the spark plugs on my 2005 Uplander. I have a few pointers for those of you trying this. There is a hard plastic tube that is connected at the top of the flexible portion of the intake plenum and to the top of intake manifold. Be careful about re-attaching it and be careful because it could break.
    The high tension cables had nearly welded themselves onto the spark plugs and they were just hell to remove. The back middle one is the worst. In my case, there is a sensor line (probably an O2 sensor) that goes into the back of the engine. It will CONSTANTLY be in the way when you are trying to wrench loose the high tension wire, so be careful and practice deep breathing so you won't lose your mind and rip it apart!. One other thing I found useful was a flexible 3/8" extension piece. I picked mine up at a thrift shop and it looks like a thick piece of cable with the attachments for a 3/8" ratchet. It made it easier to guide the spark plugs in and thread them in.
    Get a decent tie down ratchet line that will rotate the engine. I used a cheap piece of crap and the ratchet bent all apart. It takes quite a bit of tension to pull and KEEP the engine forward.
    Thank you again. This video really helped me to get this done. Thank goodness I won't have to do this again for another 160,000 km (100,000 miles)

    • @pingpong9656

      I would suggest changing them every 60,000miles - I started having small engine power losses on highway at close to 60K...

    Just finished plugs and wires on my 2008 Montana (3.9), and I found this to be the best video out there. My engine had the "B" shaped intake plenum so it was not the same as the video. Here are my my thoughts, now that I am done: I did not have to take off the coil pack and was able to work around it. Give yourself lots of time. Thanks, Richard!

      How tough was it to get the leads off the plugs? Were they welded on or easy?

    • @johnvandyk8904
      @johnvandyk8904 2 года назад

      @@pingpong9656 My leads were not welded on but they were snug. Be careful not to pull on the wire; just get a firm grip on the boot and work it off. Of course you are going to have to feel your way to get the back three.

    These vehicles can be challenging to work on so I appreciate everything one who shares their methods. Just another perspective on this job, I did the plugs & wires on my 2008 Uplander 6 months ago and did the rears different. Front 3 are easy as stated but for the rear 3, I put it on ramps, scooted under on a creeper, and did them from underneath. It was much easier and didn't require all the disassembly/removal of any other parts.

    My dad and I actually changed it about 3 weeks ago. We got the engine set-up like you showed and it did roll forward but not as much as I was expecting even in neutral. But there was more then enough room to work and it would have been impossible without finding your video. My manifold was different with larger rounded ends and one of the top bolts on the module was next to impossible to remove but we finally got it. Following your video really helped, thanks !

    Nice video, only thing I'd add is what I do any time I'm removing a spark or glow plug: blow compressed air around it before removing to keep little nasties out of the cylinder. With the MAF removal as part of the process, great chance to use some cleaner on it too.

    I have an 2004 montana and this video made a miserable job doable.Rocking that motor forward and removing the coils gave enough clearence to feel your way around in the back of the engine and get the job done but it won't be fun.My plugs were in for 20 years and resisted coming out and needed a little time and some deep creep but they did come out and only broke the first one then learned patience.Just got mine back together and don't want that job again.

    If you're only changing out the plugs, you can do it by feel from under the engine. Crawl under the van, run your hand up between the exhaust manifold and the rear of the engine. This allows you to access the three in the rear without disassembling anything. Doing this took me about 10 minutes.

    never made sense to me why Chevy changed from rear drive to front drive, and put the motors in sideways, without some sort of access panel or something to reach the back, Dodge caravans are similar only on a Dodge you can reach the back and change plugs by feeling, using your fingers as your eyes. glad I found this video before I have to change plugs in my Uplander, just something I wouldn't dream of paying someone to do

  • @jimmy77611
    @jimmy77611 12 лет назад

    I'ts actually easier the way shown in the video. The exhaust pipe is in the way trying to get it from underneath, especially if you're laying on the ground. If on a lift, it's possible to get it from underneath, but I think it's still harder then the video method, and you may have to unbolt the exhaust pipe from the manifold. You risk breaking the bolts when you do that, since they're usually rusted out and jam up.
