In 1905, psychologists Alfred Binet and Théodore Simon designed a test for children who were struggling in school in France. Designed to determine which children required individualized attention, their method formed the basis of the modern IQ test. So how do IQ tests work, and are they a true reflection of intelligence? Stefan C. Dombrowski explores how the tests have been used throughout history.

More like teachers and not schools themselves. I used to love physics until high school. Before i had a teacher that would explain things almost like telling a story and with a bunch of curiosity facts; that made want search more about the subject and consequently study more. When high school arrived, the teacher was so boring that I lost complete interest; probably the only reason I still had good grades was because of solid physics foundations from the previous teacher.
Teachers are people. That’s the sad truth. They don’t love what they do, and they don’t get paid much to do it. Especially effecting is this: there is no competition. There isn’t a surplus of teachers competing for the best, but in fact not enough

Literally no one from the school system thinks that people are categorized only by IQ. Grades in school are a very useful tool, not only to determine a student's conscienciousness, but also to find who has difficulties learning. BUT WAIT, that is not to say that it is the sole factor for the value of an individual, as there are many other aspects that make someone unique. You are simply misrepresenting the school system, which I don't find to be noble.
@@henrilemoine3953 I think that everyone is born in a different way therefore not everyone has the same type of intelligence. For exemple a brilliant writer that has a very good creative type of intelligence might be bad at math because despite his creative genius he has a lack of logical type of intelligence which is the type of intelligence that (for some reason) is privileged at school. This system doesn't measure emotional intelligence either, for exemple as long as a person with low emotional intelligence (like for exemple a bully) is good at solving problems this person will be rewarded by the school system anyway. This can be easily explain by the fact that "creativity" and "kindness" can't be objectively graded, so the system put a number on the only thing that it can put a number on which is "problem solving". This is an extremely unfair system that I definitely did not misrepresented in my comment.

@@henrilemoine3953 I also disagree with this. Grades do not measure learning deficiencies as you like to believe. And if you watched this video, you will find that trying to grade learning deficiency has no scientific backing and is difficult to measure with consistent results. Tests have to be rigorously designed by industry professionals to produce whorthwhile results and I guarantee no shool makes their staff do this every year for every curriculum. At most they'll do it for the standardized tests, but I refer you to T.E.D ED's video on that subject to learn why that is also ineffective in its current state and why it should change.
I’ve got a low IQ, I’m going to uni in September to study nursing, I was told I would never be able to do my GCSEs, I did them and passed. I’ve been tested loads for “issues” and disabilities, I can however excel at non-verbal reasoning though. 😊

Congrats, this proves that you don't need to get a freaking 140 on a MENSA IQ test in order to succeed in life the way YOU want to succeed.
Work hard, and stop worrying about your IQ. It doesn't matter if you have an average IQ, or a genius level IQ. You can still do whatever you want with your life.

In no way does that make one with a higher IQ smarter than one with a lower IQ
When I was 7 my school forced my mom to take me to an IQ test because they wanted to prove I have a learning disability. I scored 139. They decided on their on I have some sort of mental disability and I had regular meetings with the school psychologist where I just draw and played with a hamster, until my mom figure out what they are doing.
I didn't have any disability, I was just really bored in class so I didn't do any homework or participate that much, and I was a very sensitive kid so when the teachers got mad at me I used to hide under my table and cry.
This treatment caused me a lot of problems later on and some of them still effect me to this day, mostly mentally.
The school system is messed up. They think that if a kid doesn't learn like everyone else, it's because he they have a problem. I learned faster then most of my class, so I was bored of doing things I already knew over and over. Now I find it hard to finish assignments and learn properly because I never had to, and now that I need to I have no learning skills.
If instead of taking me out of class to play with hamsters they let me learn faster, I would most likely do better at uni now.
If I was bored I just drew cartoon characters.Most of my teachers were cool with me so they let me get away with it.After awhile of being bored they let me skip 9th and 12th grade. I just realized how lucky I was thanks to you.

@@blackpepper2610 My parents were not the problem. I don't know what I wrote that made you think that, but they are fighting hard for me every day, and they always had. Of course they are not perfect, my twin sister and I were their first daughters and I admit they made some mistakes (which they didn't repeat with my little sister btw), but they are both great parents.
Its challenging to raise twins as your first kids. I think I didn't mention my twin sister in my original comment because I didn't think it mattered, but she went through a similar thing.
Right now my parents and my sisters are my only family, and I couldn't wish for a better one. I'm sure you didn't mean to offend me by your comment but it's very important to me that you'll understand it wasn't their fault. They always supported me and I've seen them yelling at teachers and embarrassing themselves to make sure nothing like what happened at elementary school will repeat itself.

If you feel curious about math, my advice is, dive into it. Her "opinion" is just as valid as yours, you have genuine interest, wich is extremely valuable. Don't let another person's words crush your motivations.
What exactly are you trying to prove? Most of this video is bs. IQ scores have crazy validity, its just that some are good and some are bad.

this video is telling what people want to hear by sugar coating the truth, IQ is the best modern indicator of intelligence we have until today. This is backed up by a lot of sicologist and professors like Jordan poterson himself. But people don't want to believe it cause its not a pretty thing to believe

Yeah I had to do an "IQ test" for part of my depression diagnosis; it actually tracks visual problem solving, audio comprehension, short & long term memory, and comprehension. The point is to look for underlying factors that may contribute to my depression and past. As it happens, instead of having average values across the board, I have wildly high scores in some places, and average scores in others. As a consequence I take and process in more sensory data than most people, but my memory is slightly uneven, resulting in a learning deficit. It also explains why I tend to think out loud and notice a lot of random details. Sometimes I enjoy taking off my glasses just to give my brain (and eyes because eye strain sucks) a rest.

Oh cool! I know depression can affect memory and cognitive function. I have depression too and when it's really bad my grades at school plummet. I can't focus, I feel like I'm in a fog, and it's harder to remember things. I do worse at work as well.

This reminds me of the Gifted program my elementary school had, in which some kids who scored high enough on IQ tests got to leave the classroom and do fun stuff like make books and have parties. Many parents and teachers hate this program. All the students can enjoy and benefit from fun learning activities, not just the ones who score highly on IQ tests. Besides, it's damaging. The kids in the Gifted program often get inflated egos while other children feel as though they are not "gifted," all because of a flawed test that neglects to measure many other important qualities.

I've been in a gifted program during school and I don't think what you're saying is fair at all. While yeah, some of the kids there were assholes and the program gave them an unnecessary ego boost, this really wasn't the common trend. Most of us were just nerds who were bored at school and wanted to do something else for a change. These tests weren't useless, they did an excellent job at sorting out the exact kids fitting for the program - fast learners who enjoy learning and aren't reliant on school. You're neglecting to mention the reason these programs exists in the first place - to help people connect. It was an opportunity to finally meet and interact with people similar to me, in an environment where I wouldn't get bullied just for asking the teacher questions or for having good grades. As a result most of my friends at the time were from that program, and it was extremely important for my mental health. Yeah, obviously having fun learning activities is always a good idea for anyone, but cancelling these programs won't help with that. It's just going to give intelligent kids even more of a socially miserable time at school.
I never liked the "gifted" program for the very reasons you mentioned. My best friend was in that program. They went on monthly field trips, played games and participated in a lot of fun activities. They were able to leave class early to do this. Their curriculum challenged their intelligence, further allowing them to grow. This doesn't happen with "average" children. Theyre not challenged or praised for the gifts they have. They're not recognized. It's wrong. So many people are geniuses in disguise.
My best friend always considers me being as gifted as she...however, I was never in a gifted program.( I did land in an advanced reading classes only to get shoved into remedial math classes, lol) I can reason, deduct and predict like no else I know. I.Q tests only test a certain type of intelligence; there are many types of intelligences. The IQ test doesn't take this into consideration. Consequently, a lot of gifted children are left behind because some test said they didn't deserve to be challenged.
@@Niccole-oq8wo I fully agree that the average student should be pushed forwards and challenged more, but how is cancelling the gifted programs going to help with that? Stopping someone from achieving their potential isn't going to help anyone else achieve theirs. All you're doing here is addressing jealousy. If you closed down these programs the budget they use up would just go back into the regular boring school system and everyone would lose. If you think others should have similar opportunities, then open up new programs built for different types of intelligence - don't close the current ones.
Again, you're forgetting to consider the reason these programs exist in the first place - they aren't there because of some nonsensical superiority complex, they're there because people with high IQ tend to be challenged less by school, want to learn more and seek connections with others similar to them. You can argue that this doesn't correctly measure intelligence all you want, but the social environment there is vastly different from what would have happened if they opened it up for everyone.
I was in an awful social situation in school at the time. That was the only place where I actually got to meet similar kids without worrying about bullying all of the time, and I know that I'm not the only one who had that experience. That's a really important thing to consider, especially when talking about younger ages. It sucks that not everyone gets to have an experience like that, but it doesn't mean nobody should.
im glad this is finally pointed out. i used to consider myself as a "smart" person since i did a great job academically. but i started to change my mind and i dont think that im brilliant anymore cause in fact there are so many friends of mine who have a lower academic score are incredibly intelligent than i am. so.. that's amazing dude

I am glad that the video makes the point that even though IQ testing has been used incorrectly in history, it isn't something that is useless. We may never have a perfect iq test, but we can use it (and other tests) to learn how to benchmark the human mind. Just as we have with physical tests. However, there will always be exceptions.
One day, my lecturer taught us, when suddenly our topic changed dramatically from prostitute's psychological well-being to IQ test.
I remember when he said this to us
"Only fools believe in IQ test. Your future ain't bound to mere numbers and calculation. Your life is better than that. You determine your own life, not those numbers."
Still, his words make huge impact upon my life.

Yes there are factors such as higher income aka extra education but IQ determines how quickly you learn a new thing. If people in the real world can absorb certain skills significantly faster than others, then they will be more successful in life. It's simple logic, and the concept that everybody has absolutely equal potential and that there are no biological factors that affect the way you interact with the abstract world is like putting your head into the sand.

This is very relevant Info.I also love this animation style - its great for teaching facts of these kinds - the bright primary colors, geometric shapes and movement styles continually morph amongst themselves, yet accordingly to an intrinsic design scheme. And its consistent throughout the entire piece. It makes the learning so easy and it's like going on just a great fun ride!

Wisest 1 I truly respect your opinion. You think that. Everyone thinks differently and you thinking Ted Ed isn’t the best is 100 percent fine. On the other hand, I think that Ted Ed is teaching me all that I need to know for now. Maybe in the future it won’t be the best teaching resource. It seems that you need something a bit more on the deeper meaning side. I agree with you though, the IQ test is great and Ted Ed didn’t cover that in the video. They didn’t necessarily cover everything about the history of IQ in this video, but I think it covered enough for us to know the basics of the history. If you want anything else to be covered just let me know. Also Ted Ed explains it in a more fun and colourful way. That may help students pay attention more and learn more from Ted Ed than what they’re learning in school.

@Wisest 1 but the title of this video stated "the dark history of IQ" so expect this will be in a negative standpoint of view... but they still managed the video to be light at the conclusion of this course... you should have been more understanding, not the other way around...

i'm embarrassed to admit that i still feel extremely upset and awful about always scoring low on these tests. i've always been considering myself as 'not too shabby' in terms of intellectual capacity, however, when it comes to iq testing i get very, very lost in all those patterns. thank you for the video - i never really knew about the true horrors of such a seemingly trivial thing.
I didn’t take an iq test, but a different type when I was diagnosed with my autism that measured a lot of stuff like memory, processing speed, etc. I cried a lot when I found out I scored below average, but now I’m embarrassed of that reaction, and the fact that I still feel a bit ashamed, but it’s my opinion you also shouldn’t have to feel embarrassed for having a reaction to the strains put on you by society. You can acknowledge something is not logical without beating yourself up about it. Anyway all this to say, if you still feel bad, try not too be too hard on yourself.
To begin with, IQ tests are highly outdated and controversial, and the same person taking it can rank different scores at different days. Not to mention the ignorance and damage that categorizing children based on score numbers of a standardized test that is said to rank “intelligence” does.
It doesn’t score intelligence at all, it only measures a small part of a logical-math thinking. Intelligence is a whole cognitive process that is always evolving, it can’t be measured in a standardized test!
And the fact that nowadays in 2024 people still believe it does is beyond me!

@@kevinhodge4730 They don't, though? If you look at a test's biases, like getting a higher score if you go to school, it explains why it is kinda effective. Someone who didn't go to school would probably be less successful than someone who went to school. That doesn't mean the test scores potential accurately. IQ tests generally touch up on creativity, and other intelligence types.
It is correlated, but because of other factors. It isn't even correlated that strongly.

Strange how it doesn't. All success earned comes from Emotional Quotient traits. You can be smart as a whip but if you can't control your impulses, aren't resilient in the face of failure, have no discipline, etc. then you'll be a failure in life regardless of how smart you are. The two are completely different things.
It should be noted that both Simon and Binet understood that the test they had created could be used for malicious intent. They cautioned against taking the results too far, but in the end they ended up having little say in how their original idea would be applied

The problem is the amount of variation. Sure, if you're hungry, tired, depressed or anxious, ofcourse it is going to play a role in your final result. Other factors do contribute to a fluctuating intelligence range as well. But that does not mean that it is not accurate. The correct manner to observe and analyze such psychometrics (personality tests like big five count as well), is to keep in mind that although the score can and does shift slightly during the day or various mental and physical states, it never results in a dramatic change in IQ score nor does it correspond to a lack of general intelligence.
Unfortunately, we know that while IQ is in part decided environmentally, it is mostly genetically influenced; meaning that it is determined at birth.
Can you manipulate it through environmental means such as nourishment and/or education? Definitely.
Does that mean there is not a fixed cap? No.
So, I would say that each person has a vareity of potentials, abilities and talents, most of which are settled the moment that one is borned. Intelligence (or general intelligence if you'd like) is one of those potentials, and the whole concept of potential is that there is a fixed cap; you can work on yourself and possibly reach your best version, but after that, you hit a conceptual "roof".

I am studying Psychology and therefore confront myself with IQ and tests on a regular basis, and in fact there are many IQ tests with a very high reliability.
That we do not fully understand all components of the brain yet, does not have anything to do with how IQ tests work.
So please, enlighten me where you get your insight from, that IQ tests have low reliability and do not work.

I'm a 15-year-old teenager, and I took A MENSA IQ test. However, I took it online, so I'm not sure how reliable it is.
I'm assuming it's somewhat reliable. I got 112 on it.

Entered a private school in 1970 at the age of 11, and took the Binet test.
After two years I took the Binet test again.
I.Q. was 30 points higher.
I was in a classroom with 9 students and two teachers. One had a Ph.d and the other a Masters.
Environment can indeed have a positive effect on one's intellect.
But to dismiss any inherent biological differences on the basis that other things have an effect is dangerous nonsense.

IQ does not measure your success, only your intelligence. Best advice is not to look at your results or if better, don't do an IQ Test at all.

There are a lot of different types of IQ tests out there. Some on them I score very high on, some not so high. I have a phd in astrophysics and was always one of the top students in every class without really studying, so I know what I got upstairs. That said, if you ask me to flip shapes and match patterns for an hour, I'm not going to score that high.

I was given my first IQ test in 7th grade in my 2nd year of public school back in 1974. It was administered to select me for the "academically talented" group the following year where they had us skip some years subjects and combine others- enabling us to graduate high school a year earlier. However no one noticed, in all my years of schooling, that I was severely dyslexic. I was diagnosed at age 50 after I commented to my Dr. that I still couldn't spell my brother Brian's name correctly.

Yes it does. It's actually a big factor on how fast and easier your gonna get your goals. Although it truly dependant on how much motivation you have to reach your goals

IQ tests, if you make good use of it, can help identify natural abilities, interests as well as weakness. They could help save years of struggle and can tell what should one do to be at their best.
I have a sort of low IQ score. I never went to college. But I taught my self animation and now run my own business. Doing well on IQ tests just means you are good at IQ tests. It has almost nothing to do with your creative capacity.
It actually does have allot to do with your self taught learning and adaptation. Knowing you learned animation on your own and were score to run a business alone, I'm guessing you have a write high IQ
Good for you, you worked hard and you became successful. IQ tests though are probably the best at testing the creativity of a person that isn't either self report or those "think of a use or all of the possibilities" tests. Though there are people who score high in IQ tests who aren't creative at all. It's just that creative people are intelligent. The notion that you're just good at an IQ test and nothing else is false and ignores the century of literature that's been comparing the academic/career success to many tested populations. Is this evidence not enough? Or right, it's also found that IQ correlates to other aspects of cognitive abilities which you might consider as pieces of "intelligence." It's a definitional matter if you want to go down that path, but it's been found that higher IQ people have higher processing speeds (There's a .25 correlation between IQ and reaction time), score generally higher on all aspects of intelligence (ex. spatial reasoning, working memory, logic, verbal intelligence. People with higher IQs are also more capable of keeping more factors inside their minds, which if you think about it makes a huge difference in the real world or on IQ tests.

It's not the test that's bad, but how people are using it. It should have been kept in its original purpose, to help kids by figuring out where they may struggle. That said, I would have been sterilized in Virginia in 1924.

The first thing to know about IQ is that you can increase your score by at least 20 points through training.
The second is that IQ scores increases in countries that improve their school system. (mentioned in the video, along with other factors that improve learning like affordable and available health care)
It works well as a "general knowledge" screening, but that is about it.
I suspect you could use IQ tests to compare different groups in a country and see if there is systematic biases against certain groups, given that we would expect any random grouping not based on academic results to be unbiased. (Things like skin tone or gender comes to mind.)

As far as I know it wasn’t a IQ test that was used for the selection of army in US, it was a personality test which is something totally different. The Flyn effect is based on the lack of new norms. A large group of people must be tested to determine the norm. It is highly possible that IQ of 100 is no longer the average and that the distribution has grown larger.

me and many friends who are neurodiverse and have learning disabilities were refused support in high school because we scored high on an iq test, i ended up dropping out of school because of it. the systems in place have an incredible detrimental affect on students yet they are still the standard
Then why dont you get help for it. If you dont go out of your way to compensate for any inability, thats your fault. I got ADHD, and atleast put effort to get counselling and medication. How tf were you refused support too. Is your school that underfunded it cant afford another paycheck for an EA?
