Hi Jeremy N, I have been trying to wire a switch to a relay for my led lights I’m using in my stereo build. I know how to wire the lights to the relay, I am having the hardest time wiring the switch to the relay. I am using a 5pin switch button, I’m only wanting my lights to come on when my car is running and I press the button. Any help you could provide, I’d be sincerely grateful. Switch has Blue marked NC White as NO Green as Common Red + Black -
This is the BEST explanation on how to wire a relay that I have seen...I've watched a BUNCH of videos on how to do this. Thank you for putting this up. Well done!
You can tell how well someone understands a subject by how well they can simplify it... you sir have made relays (an intimidating subject) easy to understand to an average joe. Thank you!
The best explanation I have come across. You even showed that the same 12 v terminal can be used for the switch and relay. 87A will be used for the small light on my toggle switch when I turn the key on and 87 will make the big design on the same toggle switch glow when I turn the switch on. SWEET. Thanks for taking the time to mock up your wiring display. Subscribed
This by far is the best relay instructional on the internet. You are clear and to the point. Love the presentation. Your diagram or char was superb. For the first time I can say I now understand relays all thanks to your efforts.
This is awesome. Thank you 🙏 I am putting late model headlights in my Lexus ISF. They are LED daylight runners. There are two wires to power. One is for 100% brightness, the other is for 50%. So, when I turn the ignition on, one wire gets the 100% led lights on. As soon as I turn the park lights in, it will switch to 50%. This helped me visually understand what I need to do 😀😀
I love it. I wire relays in as kill switches. Looking at the wiring diagrams for that car. Cutting into the power to the fuel pump from the fuel pump relay to pins 30 and 86. Pin 87 continues the circuit to the pump. Pin 85 goes to the hidden switch , the other side of the switch is hooked to ground. On some I use 87A to power a horn under the drivers seat so if the ignition is turned on with the kill switch off the horn under the drivers seat goes off. I normally try to get the 130db horns from the cheap tool store.
All I have is a relay in hand with no packaging. It was given to me by a mechanic because I was burning up switches to the electric fan in my Jeep. Laid out like a elementary school project makes all the difference in understanding. Labeling the colors functions and placements is a blessing. Thank you so much for your video.👍
That’s fantastic! You may like a few of my other videos too about choosing the right wire sizes and fuse sizes. It’s all really important if you want to prevent wires from burning! Good luck with the Jeep! They rule!
This is a fantastic explanation! And a very cool little display, so much easier to understand. Please keep this setup and put it in a shadow box in your garage!
After watching a few boomers try to say it's 2 circuits that require 2 power sources, I'm glad to have stumbled across your video which confirms my suspicion that it can SIMPLY from the same power source. The video is SO simplified compared to others and well laid out. Can't wait to put it to practice. Cheers mate!
It should be simple. However you look at it, your relay and switch receive power from the battery, through 1 wire or 2, you choose how many wires you really want to run.
Incredibly helpful for applying to exactly the application I was looking for! And echo those who have said it's one of the best and clearer explanations out there!

I really appreciate you creating this video. It helped me understand the typical relay circuit I needed for my project. An improvement to this demonstration could be showing the switch receiving power from a lower amp 12v source, say your fuse box, instead of (1:31) showing it coming out of the same fuse powering the light. You could use an 18ga wire to power the second fused line all the way to the switch and thru to the relay (coming from the same battery but routed outside of the video frame). The power feeding the light could be a 14ga wire from the battery clamp all the way to the light. This way, you could visually demonstrate how a low amp switch could power a higher amp device. Also, you could make the wire from the switch to the relay be really long and coiled up to demonstrate how you can use a single cheap long thin wire to control a device that requires a more expensive thicker shorter wire. I bought a 5-pin relay because that was all they had at the auto parts store. Thanks for explaining 87A. I won't need it for my project, but its good to know what it's for. This would have been a good time to introduce to your audience the terms "normally open" and "normally closed." Thanks for sharing your knowledge. -Jimmy

When rc relay is swiched on by the switch on the transmiter the pin 30 on 5 pin relay will ground out. Not good when you need the engine running, but when power is turned off pin 87a is now ground and the engine shuts down. It works !!! But when power back on throwing ground back to pin 30 ( nothing is attached to it ) engine wont start un less i unplug pin 87a and cycle power on and off plug wire back onto 87a after restartin engine. Will function again as a kill switch. Thinking of installing a arm switch to turn 87a off to grnd then turn on after starting engine. Failsafe on receaver is set to shut down power and engine if loss of signal and power don't want it taking off. If you or others have any further ideas thanks.
Or .. 87a can be the most important terminal. In the real world 87 is normally open, and is triggered on. While 87a is normally on, and triggered off. That way you can do switching ... which is kinda handy .. to have more options.

@@dailydosedetermination yes and no. The fuse size is determined by what you are powering, like light bulbs in this example. You also need a relay that is sized appropriately for the circuit. The relays I’m using in this video are able to handle 30 amps. But that is not the fuse size you want. I made a video on this topic actually. Take a look at this one ruclips.net/video/EhzN6UdnmPA/видео.html
@@WiringRescue ok so the fuse would be what my total amperage draw of my lights would require. So in my instance I have a total of 7.5A in my LED system so a 10A fuse would be the right fit?

Thxs I've wired hundreds of relays never new what 87a did exactly this solves my beam headlight no floor switch on my hotrod problem
I’m happy to hear that it helped you out!! It’s even better that it made a hotrod work!
@@WiringRescue not so much the hotrod work im 6'10 and getting to the dimmer switch on a older vechile on the floor very difficult with the relationship of the dash to my knee
@@jeremyhanna3852 - lol. I’m 5ft 11 and I wack my knee on dashes a lot. I cannot even imagine what your knee has been smashed into!
@@WiringRescue yeah life is tuff when your way bigger than everybody one size fits all my butt and my hot rod is 52 buick nice and big I can't drive 32 fords
Wow! Impressive. Thanks for breaking it down and that example diagram that back it off,Top Top stuff. THANKS❤

Thank you for all these videos on wiring. They've helped a lot of people out.
Thank you for watching! I am thrilled that the videos are able to help people out with their projects!
@@WiringRescue I believe it is safe to say that the vast majority of mechanics would claim that the electrical system on any vehicle is the most difficult to fully understand and trouble shoot. Your videos help take the mystery out of it.
@@wlindenlaub - that made my night! Thank you!
THANKS MUCH-VERY WELL explaned. I bought 5 pin by accident, and now i just wont use 87-a.
Fantastic mate, just the info needed. I’m adding a 2nd fan on my classic mini via manual switch so won’t need the 87a 👍
Excellent! Did you see my electric fan video? Take a look if you haven’t yet!
I have mate, albeit this one was more useful as I’m wiring directly through to a switch, not using a sender. It’s just for heavy traffic use really.
@@tonywood6332 - perfect! I appreciate you watching both! Good luck with your mini !
Best explanation ever. E olha que sou brasileiro e tive que recorrer ao amigo de outro país!

Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
@@WiringRescue I have another question! the fuse going from battery to pin 30 would be the amps used for the relay? being 30?
@@dailydosedetermination - that sounds like exactly what I would do!
Brilliant video, great to visually see a system working.

Thank you much! I’m really glad you found it helpful!
Very helpful!! Now I understand 87a
Excellent! I’m glad the video helped you out.
Jeremy! Fantastic! I just figured out why when I have my car in accessory mode the radio works but when I turn the engine over, the radio has to restart. The installer must have put the radio power on 87a. This has been bothering me for a while. I'll take a look now that I understand a little more about relays!
Great discussion! I learned alot. Better video than most.
Thanks! I really appreciate it!
Excellent explanation!
