Until women are treated more humanly in Saudi Arabia, the WTA shouldn't hold tournaments there. PERIOD! No argument! Done! It's simple. Don't take the money.
Saw Jon Wertheim’s comments on Halep’ s wildcard on tennis channel but since he won’t reiterate them on social media, will comment here: Sharapova’s adrv was also found by CAS to be unintentional she also bore No Significant Fault or Negligence. Your statement that Halep’s case is different because hers was unintentional shows your bias and/or lack of journalistic integrity. Sharapova took meldonium at AO ‘16 mistakenly thinking it was still permissible but there was no intent to cheat or take a banned substance, per CAS: “under no circumstance can [Sharapova] be considered an intentional doper.” Whereas Halep’s “just a contaminated supplement” defense was accepted by CAS “on the balance of probabilities” - you present Halep like SHE’s the one who should under no circumstance be considered an intentional doper, when she only established that the source of Roxadustat (EPO) was LIKELY from a contaminated supplement. And we never got a full accounting, despite your article’s claims, for how Halep went from checking the banned substance list and contacting Romanian anti-doping herself in 2017 to “”relying and “fully trusting” her team in 2022, nor for the blood irregularities in her ABP.

WTA needs all the money it can get and the Saudis offered the most money. There was nothing stopping another organization from outbidding the Saudis, but no one else thought the WTA Finals were worth that kind of money. No one should blame the WTA for not being valued more highly by organizations not tied to countries that limit women's rights.
In a purely economic world, yes. But this is not a purely economic world.
