I have to say, I really enjoyed seeing Odin's reaction to him tearing that foam circle. Just because that is exactly how I would react and it's nice to know other people react similarly.
I think it was a touch of genius-- We have ALL been Odin when a well made piece of a prop or cosplay ended up getting scrapped due to one-time-stick-for-all-eternity-glue!
Here is the final pattern from the video: imgur.com/a/zVmCC These are four images sized for US letter paper. Print all four at 100% size, line up targets and tape them together. then cut out. Need a light box so you can see through the paper? Hold them against a window on a sunny day. Single sheet Pattern: i.imgur.com/I4U6auZ.jpg Oversized paper, be creative on how to print this one. looking to make a bigger shield? Just extend the lines out, and draw a new arc like I did in the video. Want a real challenge? Make an OVAL shield by stretching the Single Sheet pattern before you print it. Say Vertical 115% and Horizontal at 90%. The pieces will still line up, and it will still dome out too!
I think we can all agree that odin is the bob ross of these things, he always welcomes you to the videos, and always explains exactly what he is doing, no matter how many times he might have done it in previous videos I love watching these
Honestly, Odin's probably the only Craftsmen worthy of my time. I love his videos and he explains what to more than others. Definitely helps me with my crafts and in almost everything dealing with Cosplay. appreciate your work Odin. 😃

odin i'll be honest with you, this video is funny, way funnier than the others you make, it does show the trial and error process we cosplayers all have to live every time we need to build something new, loved it
Nice! I thought you were just going to mask off sections and paint them separately. Your use of cut and scored foam really gives it a better look and dimension. Great job on the straps and antique gold/washes, too!
Hey Odin, great job on this project. I learned a lot of new techniques from it. Small question about plastidip though. I heard it covers small mistakes and gaps in the eva foam pretty well, but wouldn't this also mean that it hides some of the score marks if they aren't wide enough?
+OptimusWII- Plasti Dip has to build up to hide the marks. If you use the brush on liquid and not just the spray can, it would defiantly hide these score marks. The guys who make boffer shields for Belegarth always paint a layer or two with thinned brush-on first, and then spray over it. This makes their shields tough enough to last a few years! They do a coat of spray last, as Plasti Dip is self-solvent, and the spray coats will level out the brush marks from the first layer. So, if the brush-on is used, Plasti Dip would absolutely cover the score marks. But this is just one real-world example that I know of.
Oh wauw, that's awesome that the spray coat can level out the brush strokes. While I'm asking you questions, would you mind helping me with another one? It's my first time working with eva foam and I've got some rather large gaps between the layers. What would you advise to fill them? You mentioned kwik seal but I'd prefer something that's also sandable.

The things you make are fantastic, wish I had a workshop myself to make things, can you make the green lanterns lamp from the cartoons? That would be great to see. How can I win one of your props???
The underlying music and the way you speak really gives me a How It's Made-vibe, not to say it's a bad thing. I kinda dig it. :) Cool videos, keep it up.
I loved your fusion tsurugi (FFVII: Advent Children) sword build you did on DIY Prop Shop and I am wondering if the same techniques you used for that can be used to make other types of swords? For example, could you do a build of Kirito's "Elucidator" or "Dark Repulsor" from the anime "Sword Art Online"? For those types of swords, would you tackle them the same way or would you do something completely different?
I like your videos, you show how to make props on a budget and they are helpful with tips because you don't just have to use these tips on one thing, if you're building something that has a similar texture or feature, they help a lot. and I like your little ending because it shows that you don't have to be a copycat with props make it however you want as long as you're happy with the end result
Contact Cement will stick to the plastic, if you rough it up first. Figure out where you are going to glue the inside circle piece for the straps, mark it, and then sand it with 120 or lower grit sand paper. Just scratch the hell out of it. What you want to do is really rough up the surface, so the glue has something to get into and hold onto. The scratches don't need to be deep, just plentiful, and really rough to the touch. Contact cement will likely just peel off the smooth finish of the sled if you just paint it on without any prep work. Don't worry, it won't take long, and don't sand anywhere you want to paint later, leave that smooth! Be carful you don't scratch the front while working, blue tape it, or lay it on a towel while sanding the inside. I have not touched a saucer sled in many years, and I don't know what type of plastic they are made from, but some plastics really don't like spray paints. And most vinyls will never allow spray paint to dry. Seriously, never. The paint is tacky for years... RIP vinyl Terminator model kit... You can test spray paint on the center of the inside, it will get covered anyway. If the paint you want to use does not dry, then go to an automotive store, and get spray paint made for car interiors! Most cars have vinyl seats, and that spray paint (it's about $10 a can) will stick, and it will dry. It's really stinky, and smells horrible for a couple of days, but it really works. After a good coat of say, black or grey car paint, you can then paint whatever spray paints you want on top of it, and they have always worked for me. If you want to do Cap's shield, regular automotive paints will have the bright colors with a metallic finish, and it may look really good.

Nicely done, but may I suggest not washing with black, and instead using dark brown. I learned this from miniature painting that brown washing over gold and bronze creates a natural looking dull tarnish that's more realistic and gives a lot of depth to the faux metal. Then a quick dry brush of the gold on the raised surfaces gives the impression that the metal has been buffed to some extent. Side note, still wanna see Balsac's Jaws of Death helmet from Gwar lol.
+Odin Makes Great build, I prefer first shield to be honest. But your method to make the shape with plaster and so on... this is pure gold ! :) I keep that in mind for some other project. Sure it will become handy one day ! (R2D2 fiberglass dome ? :) ) I have a question : What about just putting the EVA foam on plaster and heat it there so it naturally take shape of the plaster master ? Instead of shopping it by hand. Why not go that way ? Thank you in advance for any answer ! :)
R2D2 dome, that would work, and help you make all the panel lines on his head parallel. I have used this technique to make a 8 foot fiberglass UFO for a comic shop, and I used it to make the head for a a full size Dalek back in 1992.
Is it coarse from sanding? Or is the texture of the plasti dip acting funny? Plasti dip can be self-leveling or self-solvent, meaning a new coat will partially dissolve the top of a previous coat., but it can't be smoother than what you start with. My new Portal Gun video has this problem- it looks a little fuzzy because the foam was sanded and then sprayed. A heat gun will flatten most of the sanding fuzz, but it cam open contact cement seams. Xylene is the solvent used to thin Plasti dip from a can (And is incredibly toxic, so it is not available everywhere), if you tried to wipe or sponge Xylene or Klean-Strip Industrial Maintenance Coating Thinner (a safer substitute) you may be able to sooth out the coarseness you are looking for. I would be afraid to spray it, as an example, Xylene can make you feel ill just from the mist landing on the skin of your arm! Both Xylene and Klean-Strip Industrial Maintenance Coating Thinner also work to dissolve Contact Cement, so if you are not careful about the amount you are using, your seams can open up. It's all a pain, but this is stuff I have stumbled over before. I think Punished Props has a tutorial on how to smooth out EVA foam props, I probably should watch it too.
Odin Makes I mean the texture of the plastidip. The eva foam is very smooth. Maybe something wrong about my plastidip. Some said it needs to be warmed up. Thanks for very detailed answer.

this is why we love you Odin...and also why you're the MAYUNN!
Can you do the Autobot Matrix of Leadership circa G1?
when he says shit I pissed myself laughing cuz he's so clean usually 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
By the way one question : when I use plastidip to coat the foam, the surface is rather coarse. Any tips to make plastidip surface smooth? thanks
Thanks for very detailed answer.
nixland oh yeah definitely warm it up it'll spray a lot smoother just soak the can in hot tap water for a while

These videos are really good so much great info , thanks
Wow Odin you really know your stuff.
I'm new here Odin and my favorite childhood superheroes were Batman cyclops and wolverine. I would love to see Batmans cowl or wolverines mask or possibly Jim lee's cyclops googles. Thank you for taking time out of your day and uploading videos . I never been to comic con and I like to watch cosplayers make their own costumes and weapons here on RUclips. Awesome video I own a couple action figures of Wonder Woman.
I would love to see you make a Gungnir lance
Dang those look awesome
Looks amazing!
Can you make one of the canonic jars from the 1999 mummy?
Can you make the pistol that the hammerhead shark looking guy has at the beginning of the lawbreakers trailer?
Looks awesome! Maybe try and have a go at the tribal knife from Far Cry 3! Its got a unique style and it'd stand out from your other props. Keep up the great work
best part is when odin swears a lot, reminds me of my uncles.
Great vid and prop, but I was wondering, did you quit Prop Shop?
Da mystic Potato I did not quit. I am still one of the hosts at DIY Prop Shop.
Odin Makes glad to hear it!
Do you know what those Runes translate to?
Please Odin, I think P. K. E meter device from ghost busters could be awesome to be made. Thanks.
