There is some truth to this. Not all doctors are created equal. It’s like finding a good mechanic. Also nothing wrong with Google doctoring. Just tread lightly. I tried the OMAD diet for 2 months. Felt pretty good. Then went in for my annual physical and my cholesterol was through the roof. My doctor, without batting an eye, recommended statins. I told him, “I think I have an idea of what it could be. Give me 3 months and I’ll retest.” 3 months later I came back and I was able to get my cholesterol under control through a change of diet and still felt great. All these “miracle” diets, exercises, supplements, etc. are preying on the desperate, lazy, undisciplined. The way I try to approach health is, do what I can through eating a healthy, varied diet, exercise regularly and try to minimize my stress. After that, seek out professional, certified medical help.

My two cents: I grew up in a cult. It’s sad how uneducated we are on using critical thought. Anytime I find someone online or irl who can be described as “charismatic”, this is a huge red flag. Look into their credentials diligently. It’s easier now than ever to become a “guru” of sorts, with accessibility to people’s feeds.
The pattern of someone taking the world by storm with their fresh, new ideas or energy thriving on their control/influence over others is so common. Look back at examples in your own life to see the pattern.

Switched to a well balanced diet of mainly baked or boiled chicken, fruit and veggies, coupled with crossfit 4x per week.
I now weigh 190, take ZERO pills and can live without needing a sweat rag 24/7. No more CPAP to sleep.
I guess my message here is that the VA will happily allow us vets to have another chance to die for our country so long as we take our pills like good little test subjects.

From there I started at the gym and spent months focusing on proper form and body weight movements. Now I am able to do quite a bit, but you won't find me out trying to max what I can lift. I stick within my pain threshold. I actually just had a couple more MRIs done on shoulder and arm and am fully aware that more surgery is likely in my future.
Also, as mentioned by my partial med list, a big part of my disability is from mTBI (concussions). My memory sucks, my brain gets easily scrambled and i'm often in a very dark place psychologically.

The producers of seed oils use hexane to get the oil out, then get the solvent out of the oil with heat, which oxidizes the oil. Then it is bleached, then heated again to get a better color, then heat it again to make it smell better. Each time it is heated, the oil gets oxidized more; which is not a good thing. You want to put anti oxidants in your body, not oxidized oils. If they were cold pressed, it would be a different story; but that is not the cheapest way to do it and they are looking for maximum profit. David, you should do some research yourself.

I am 70 years old and pretty darn healthy. We always cooked at home, and I still do most of the time. I can remember the first time that I heard a young mother ask her very young child what HE wanted for supper. We didn’t have a choice, we learned to eat what we could grow (chicken, milk, made our own butter, grew all our veggies & fruits. Raised chicken, beef & pork. Gathered eggs. Canned, salted, dried or fermented our food. We didn’t have such a huge problem with overweight children or adults like we do today. The simple methods could be adapted to our food supply chain still today, but it is not cost effective to the owners of our food supply. The stock owners demand high profits & the food becomes adulterated while in the field or while being processed because shortcuts are taken.

Maybe they get an antacid and are told to forget about it. But the problem doesn't go away. However, it cannot be argued that Americans are getting sicker and sicker. Diabetes, heart disease, cancers, and obesity are skyrocketing. Is that just bad luck? It's particularly strange in a time when medicine is the "best" it's ever been. Something is causal to the bad health. And while environmental factors may play a minor role, the thing that has changed in conjunction with this prevalence in disease, is the change in food to ultra-processed Frankenfood. It is a diet loaded with carbohydrate (including the 70 or so different names for sugar) and yes seed oils that is making people sick. Separately, the primary reason doctors continue to prescribe statins at such an alarming rate is because that is the "standard of care" and they are scared to be perceived as going against the AMA. Further, doctors are given precious little training in nutrition, with "all things in moderation" still the specious philosophy. I could go on, but the problem lies in the "food" we are eating. Whether it is primarily plant-based, or meat-based, or a combination; until Americans return to whole foods, and stop with the ultra-processed crap, we will continue on the current downward spiral until healthcare bankrupts the country.

    Nutrition is a hot button.
It has been pretty well established that low carb diets such as Banting (which is different from zero carb diets), are beneficial in diabetes type 2.
It also depends on the patients. Some can eat as many carbs as they want without problems, while others cannot,.
If you have Ankylosing Spondylitis (often associated with acute anterior uveitis) or Crohn's disease, starches are out. These diseases are mediated by immune cross overs of Klebsiella pneumoniae. Klebsielle lives in the lower gut, and lives on sugars. Less sugars in the lower gut means less Klebsiella. And less attacks.
I agree that many promoted diets are ridiculous and even dangerous, but a lower carb intake might benefit a substantial number of us.
Seed oils are poly-unsaturated, and can become trans fats, especially when heated. Trans fats are unanimously considered to be unhealthy in large quantities. I Use coconut oil or butter for frying , olive oil for cold dishes.

The fact is that nutritional research is mostly funded by the food and pharma industry, At best studies have been preliminary, merely suggesting further studies to settle important questions. They have zero incentive to fund research that would point to ultraprocessed food being unhealthy and whole natural foods a part of the proper human diet. Any researcher who found that eating a diet of basic natural foods prepared at home would reverse diseases of civilization would never get funding again. Any recommendations that would result in fewer drugs being sold will never see light of day.

But the fact that you point out, sure as h makes it really, really hard and confusing for anyone, especially people who think they're smarter than they really are, to sort through all the data.
Dr Greger does a good job of exactly that, for one, by going through literally thousands of studies and presenting them all on his numerous, numerous videos, but very few people want to hear that there's no shortcuts to health, that a balanced, whole foods plant based diet low in supernormal stimuli like processed sugars, fats, meat, etc is still the best path, that no pill or miracle drug will replace good nutrition.
We want the miracles, the shortcuts, the easy path and to hear that we can eat, drink, and do whatever we want and have no negative outcomes. So its hard to sort through the surge of profit motivated studies, incomplete preliminary trials, p-hacked data and the rest and find the most basic things like "does this make people sick?".

Nutritionists, especially those who have renderd hospital food ruinously unhealthy, are some of the worst-trained people coming out of universities, taught with textbooks that came out of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and the associated Loma Linda and Kellogs (selling breakfast cereal, right?) For diabetics, who can't handle carbs, they routinely prescribe stuff like cereal, toast, jelly, orange juice, custard. - SIGH.
Congratulations if you do personally advise people with T2D to go low carb or preferably zero carb. If you do not, like most of your species, shame on you. And see the story of the Tasmanian orthopedic surgeon Gary Fettke, hounded by ignorant nutitionists for telling patients to go low carb, eating lots of vegetables, pasture-fed meat and healthy fats (nuts, avocado, cheese, olive oil and fish). But he was "unqualified" and they were "qualified". They reported him to the medical board. He was in the end exonerated after it cost him a fortune in legal fees.
Why did he give that advice? HE got sick of abriding diabetic sores and chopping off the legs of carb-eating diabetics with "helpful nutritionists" telling them to eat CARBS and just increase their insulin. It is a disgraceful story repeated within several nutritionist associations.
So I would say - "as a nutritionist"? SIGH.

Anecdotally, I've never felt better than I do when I eat high quality meat, fruits and honey. After exploring many ways of eating I really do have to say that many vegetables don't sit well with my stomach. Of course this is all a personal experience, but my doctor tells me to continue eating the way I'm eating because my Triglycerides and plaque build up are so low. Cholesterol is a very complicated subject that is still strongly debated in medical literature. Food is one of the most lobbied industries in the world, and there is a long history of hard evidence pointing to large corporations lobbying the American Heart Association and other public health entities for positive coverage for their products. While I believe there are many diet grifters, I don't know if we've really had enough conclusive unbiased evidence to point in the direction that a specific diet or lifestyle is THE optimal diet for humans. This is a much more complicated situation then you gave credit to here in my opinion. Love the show, thank you for tackling such important topics in such a reasonable manner.

Could not agree more! I don't have tiktok or instagram, so don't even know about many of whom he mentioned (tho I have heard of Saladino & Berg, from RUclips). I also believe people should do whatever works best for them & provides the healthiest outcome based on results, labwork, etc. That said, for ME.. all the way back to baby food, there are pics of me gagging, refusing when my parents tried to feed me vegetables (at the time, they thought it was cute/funny, yet odd) Growing up, I was that kid made to sit at the table "until".. refusing to eat any vegetable on my plate. Thing is, I couldn't even force myself, so there I sat until bedtime, every time until they gave up. I was taken to doctors who said I'd likely die young of malnutrition, scurvy, colon cancer, etc if I didn't eat a balanced diet. As a teen, I was the one ordering things PLAIN. If it had a speck of lettuce, mustard, tomato anything.. nope, wasn't eating it. Got made fun of a LOT, but.. it was if I couldn't help it. Sure, back then.. I also ate a carb heavy diet, processed everything too, lots of soda, etc. In my 20's, changed things when I got 'gestational diabetes' during pregnancy that never went away (prob had type2 for a bit prior, just didn't know it) Anyway.... haven't had pasta, rice, potato, bread in over 2 decades. The only fruit I've eaten ever.. is maybe a bite of some fruit type pie at a holiday gathering once per decade (just don't like fruit either, tho more tolerable than veggies.... which, I've NEVER EVER had in my entire life. Not a one) I eat (before it was a thing or even mentioned by anyone) mostly meats, seafood, bacon, eggs, butter, quality salt, water & 1c coffee per day. It's been like that for a looooong time now. Just turned 52 this year & oddly enough, out of everyone I know... I'm the only one on NO medications, without a single health issue & with the best bloodwork/cholesterol/A1C of anyone I know. No digestion issues, no mineral or vitamin deficiencies, nothing. I sleep through the night without issue, don't take any supplements & feel better than ever. So.... tho only one, there is something to it, i..m..h..o & it's worked for me! :) Be well.

This is an interesting topic for this channel…. The issue with this is not addressing the fact that the FDA, our whole healthcare system is a giant grift itself. I worked in healthcare finance and consulting until I got too ill. There’s context to everything.
I was chronically ill and in and out of the hospital from the age of 9 (my first hospitalization) until I was in my late thirties.
I followed all medical advice and took every drug given and got worse and worse, labeled a “frequent flier” and was consistently belittled and ignored by “experienced physicians”.
I have been following an animal based diet for over 5 years now, and made several other changes I was told for decades didn’t really matter, and have never been healthier. I was on prescriptions since age 9 and collected them until I was taking over 10 different medications a day, now I only take a few supplements. I have not been admitted or had any new symptoms issues or problems in the five years I STOPPED using our US healthcare system.
I’m not saying misinformation is not dangerous, but not everything that was discussed here is misinformation. I’ve learned so many things from people who aren’t licensed physicians that have literally saved my life. You didn’t mention the two carnivore (animal based) advocates with an online presence who are practicing physicians. The three people you picked aren’t representative of the entire concept of alternative medicine & health isn’t cookie cutter - highly individualized

Millions of people have left their conventional allopathic doctors because they never really get well with doctor-prescribed pharmaceuticals that just mask symptoms without healing anything.

Indeed, Berg's diet advice couldn't be better. As for mocking these people for not being doctors - please. Doctors have zero training in nutrition. There is a reason these influencers are so popular and that is because traditional medical advice has been failing spectacularly. People are following their doctor's advice which largely involves taking drugs rather than getting holistic advice on nutrition, lifestyle, etc. These drugs generally carry a whole host of side effects. Also doctors are notoriously ignorant in matters of nutrition.
While I agree that we need to proceed with caution before listening to unqualified influencers, "qualified" medical doctors are leaving more and more to be desired these days. Many of the participants survived into old age with high cholesterol. Statins have side effects that in many cases outweigh the benefits. Duane Graveline was an aspiring astronaut on his way to the moon but was grounded by the statins he was prescribed. LDL can be both bad and good depending on the physical size, and the only way to know that, is if you have your blood tested for particle size. 18:31

Given the amount of medical information that is generated every day, at times it would be very difficult to determine and verify said information, which may or may not be disproven in the future. Medical doctors in training, get rudimentary courses in nutrition, and depending on their chosen specialty that they eventually end up in, much of that basic nutritional education may end up proven to be wrong, or applied in an incorrect way. If you want nutritional guidance, consult a known practicing nutritionist. But remember, based on your socioeconomic/income level as well as the complications and restrictions of your present critical thinking and life in general, good nutritional advice may not be translated into functional advice available to you due to your individual situation. Survival significantly reduces good advice that cannot be followed. When a normal sized apple costs $1.29 each here in Southern California vs a single cappuccino which may cost up to $5.00 or more, many people will choose the cappuccino over eating several apples over the next few days. To each his one. This will not change much going forward.

@@Joliefleur252 I love how your outrage has just fried your circuits. It's not enough that Pakman says your gurus are grifters, he's being WOKE, too! OMG! And it's funny how you claim the keto diet is promoted by Harvard, when their own website says: " Should you try the keto diet?
It's advertised as a weight-loss wonder, but this eating plan is actually a medical diet that comes with serious risks. "

Always love your show. But I disagree with you on Dr. Berg. (I don’t know the others)
The study you quoted was from 2013…. Get something w/in the last 5 years and I’ll read it. My wife and I have followed Dr. Berg’s diet for 3 years, we both lost weight (me~15lb and her ~7lbs) and are now at a healthy weight. We feel better and have more energy. My cholesterol went way down as did my blood pressure. I was on the cups of needing medication for both, now I’m in the green again.
Dr. Berg knows where it’s at! I’m not saying he doesn’t go a bit too far at times, (e.g. selling some of those supplements - though my wife swears by his magnesium ) but insulin resistance in America, which is his main thing, is real. He also ALWAYS quotes reputable, published (recent) research (with links) and papers from journals. I get he’s a chiropractor, but his advice has changed our lives for the better and I recommend him.

Well said! So what’s the difference between a doctor of chiropractic and medical doctor? We will call one a doctor and another just a chiropractor?

I’m 100% for exposing charlatans, but while some prominent influencers are classic grifters (hello Dr. Berg), that doesn’t negate all the information they use in their grift. For example, I follow a primarily ketogenic diet, and have had significant positive results, including weight loss, eczema gone, sleep issues gone, increased energy, and an overall increase in wellbeing in the last three years.
It’s not a fairytale, I’ve gone up and down with it, but it’s been life changing to my quality of life.
Additionally, my family physician encourages this, at least for the time being, because she sees the overwhelmingly positive effects.
There are credible peer reviewed studies acknowledging the benefits of a keto diet.
It’s not for everyone, and grifters will oversell potential benefits while minimizing harms (an unfortunate trickiness used since we began exchanging goods), but not deserving of the quackery label David is applying here.

If someone wants a more deep dive on seed oils, Dr Gil Carvalho (Nutrition Made Simple) does a really great job going over all of the actual science. His channel is really good. He does a debunk of one of Berg's videos that's very good, and I think he has a debunk of Mercola and some of these others, as well. He's a reliable, scientific source, with no skin in the game. He doesn't sell anything.

I like Dr Berg and share many of his views. He offers advice only and stresses checking with your personal doctor. Btw I consume Olive, Coconut, & Avocado Oils only. Frickin’ Canola oil is the worst! And…anyone wanting to lose weight should count carbs. I trust Berg on nutrition, you-I trust with political opinions.

@@coolchameleon21 Not a misogynist at all (I'm an old woman!) but I do not like seeing anyone speak to another person the way this woman was. I fully understand it was a tv show and she had a job to do and maybe her personality is nothing like the person she portrayed in this clip. Ever wonder why life is not as pleasant and congenial as it once was? This is why - people feel far too entitled to be nasty. She would have got much further with him and the audience had she used some manners. You can call someone out without being a b&^*h. I was in education for years with the lovely age group of 12 - 16 yr olds. Is bullying behaviour acceptable now?
