  • Leading linguistics professor at Columbia University John McWhorter talks about his brilliant book Nine Nasty Words, and the origin of F**k, s**t, c**t and the truly unspeakable swear words and pronouns. Why are some words profane, and others not? How has it changed over time, and what will the unmentionable words of the future be?

10 seconds in and he's already mentioned Gropecunt lanes! I love it when English towns won't let their councils change their beloved Gropecunt lane to something tamer and historically uninteresting. Cheers Andrew!
Oh also.. hope you do more livestreams. Last week's one was fun

I say bloody often. The only thing I can say in my behalf is I grew up with grandparents who were originally from Scotland. Arse was another big one in their house. 🤷🏻‍♀️. My dad used it but I stick with ass and whatever may come after that!🤭. I have said shite too!😆

@@jumbo4billion Thanks John! Haha I had never heard of Gropecunt Lane, I gotta admit. Loved speaking to John so much.
And livestream you say? In just over an hour, I've got one with a woman who walked around the entire world. Along the way, she got dengue fever, was raped in Mongolia, and nearly died of heat stroke in the Australian desert. Hope you're able to join!

Andrew, this big may be my new favorite of your podcast. Actually I’m going to say it is! I’m looking forward to your live stream. I’m getting ready to go into a doctors appointment in a few minutes but I will definitely be listening as I’m driving home.🚙

Oh thanks Maryann - and for coming to the livestream, it was a bit empty, but I think because it was a work time for a lot of people!
So glad you enjoyed this episode, it is one of my favourites too, he's just spectacular, isn't he. A linguistics tour de force!

He really is. I was shocked when he started talking about the black country, barely anyone outside of the UK has heard of it, I just say I'm from near Birmingham. I guess linguistically we are quite interesting though

Hi Andrew. Loved it thanks for recommending it. Loved the are you being served. I remember watching that and a whole lot of other classic British comedy (I’m Australian). Got me thinking about the next generation of curse words. I think they will be non-binary in nature. I was walking the dog when I was listening to the podcast and randomly substituted random works into well known structures. I think people through I was a little on the mad side. My personal belief in the use of cure words is it’s not just the word used it’s the intent on the part of the individual. I did a course with an indigenous Australian many years ago and he frequently used the n words when talking to us whites. He would say as a greeting to us “what up my n”. By brother as a 6 year old though the name Bill was a curse word. And would walk around all day calling people a bill. I do find the changing nature of language fascinating. Interesting about the decline in the number of languages. I had read an article that stated the language you think in will in part determine how you think. 👍
