I like watching these types of videos. I remember Mortal Monday like it was now. My bro and I went to go pick up a copy at Toys R Us R Zone. We were looking at other titles too since we were there. They had several tickets left for MK. I was looking at the poster card about to grab a ticket, when all of a sudden, this kid just comes by, grabs a ticket, looks at me for a few seconds then goes to his mom to buy it for him. Lol just the look on his face was funny, looked like he was saying what? With an attitude. So funny. Well we bought MK as well and had fun all night with it. Ah the memories. And yes, I still have it.
Absolutely love that you're tackling the Genesis for these ranking videos - your knowledge of the system and the games is second to none. NBA Jam is easily my favorite of the bunch that I've played, and it's one that I've introduced my son to, and he loves it! Shows how solid a game it is when it can transcend generations and still be a ton of fun to play!
Indeed, while I like the last game (NBA Jam: On Fire Edition... if I'm correct about that), I still find myself playing either Tournament Edition or the one that started it all, sometimes I just want a NBA Jam with the most simple ways to play compared to the stuff that was added later since Hangtime.

4:53 Damn, Hancock, when you gave Mortal Kombat some tough love, I really thought u were gonna give it a C. But I agree with you. MK II is the best out of the classic MK trilogy.
predator 2 is a solid B for and aliens 3 a solid A. This Aliens 3 is better than the snes version the music is more my type, everything else sounds good nice ranking Bro!!
Speedball 2 was one of my favourites growing up. As well as Speedball 2, there are many Amiga ports on the mega drive likely due to the Motorola 68000 in both making it easier to port. Electronic Arts in the UK seemed to publish the majority like Lotus Turbo Challenge, The James Pond Series, Shadow of the Beast and Zool.
Alien 3 was amazing; I didn’t know Acclaim purchased Arena; and Acclaim did Alien Trilogy on the PS1 which is another fave of mine. T2 was brilliant with 2 player; I also had the menacer and my bro and I used to fight over who got to use the light gun 😂
I'm surprised you like T2 as much as you do. I was obsessed with the arcade game and was super excited to get this when it came out. However, I was disappointed when I played it. I found the graphics quite bad and hated the color palette, especially in the first level. It just felt cartoony in comparison. Also, I didn't have the Menacer, so enjoyment took another significant hit there.
I remember playing Mortal Kombat on Genesis in 1992 with a friend, good times. Didn't play Terminator on Genesis until 10 years ago on emulator. The sports game i played briefly back in the day and enjoyed it. Alien 3 the game is better than the movie. Great video John.
Mortal Kombat was the best. You could tear a guys beating heart out of his chest with your bare hands., just by tapping "back, back, A" in close proximity......gold
You should do ranking videos for different companies for the SNES after you finish with the Sega Genesis!!! Then the turbografx 16!!! That would be great! And I'm sure you will get plenty of views!!!!!
Nice! I used to really like the Alien 3 game, though admittedly I had the Amiga version! And T2 was sweet! Though I hear its more easily playable with a SEGA mouse!
I really tried to play Mortal Kombat a few weeks ago on my Sega Genesis emulator and I can't tell you how what a horrible time I had because it's so hard even on easy. One of my biggest gripes with fighting games in general is the fact that if you don't know the special moves to the characters you're going to get spanked in the game. That is why after Street Fighter 2 even though I got in the Mortal Kombat as a kid a little bit mainly because the kids in my high school were into it shortly thereafter I stop playing fighting games because it felt like with each new fighting game that came out required you to learn these new moves and new combos just to play the game decently enough to get through it and I didn't want to spend that kind of time on each and every fighting game just so I can enjoy myself. That is why I've enjoyed games like Tekken or Soul Calibur and even Virtua Fighter especially Virtua Fighter on the PS2 because they were games that were playable if you were ignorant about the more in-depth moveset but rewarded you if you got good enough at them to learn the more complicated moves. Funny story about Soul Calibur is I'm not at all good at the game I don't know much about it. I just button mash when I play it. Well one day I saw a version of Soul Calibur in an arcade for a quarter so I put in my quarter and played the game and I knew from past experiences Soul Calibur is easy to beat even if you don't know what you're doing and I knew what that I would beat the game on that single quarter even though I'm a lousy soul caliber player that doesn't really understand the intricacies of the game, and sure enough I beat the game on a single quarter by only button mashing.
I never played super high impact at home but I remember playing it alot in the arcade. The only one I played more prior to blitz was John Elway football
Definitely have a few of these at my parents. Blood code is something of legend only surpassed by the Konami code. NBA Jam is the first games I've beat that took longer than 2 hours to complete it. Also have a few more.
Alien 3 on Sega Master System is a very good port. Developed by British company Probe Software. They also did some good ports on the Commodore 64. I like your Snake Plissken T-Shirt.
Didn't they change the name of speedball for the US release because the publisher was concerned that American parents would think that their kids wanted them to buy the illegal drug combination of the same name. Hilarious
The Master System version of Predator 2 is better. Back to the Future III works better on Amiga due to having more direct control plus it's a slightly longer game. 😊 For those interested in who did what: Alien 3 - Probe Software Back to the Future III - Probe Software Battle Master - Personal Software Services Mortal Kombat - Probe Software NBA Jam - Acclaim Studios Teesside Predator 2 - Perfect Entertainment Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe - The Bitmap Brothers Super High Impact - Iguana Entertainment Incorporated T2: The Arcade Game - Probe Software
The problem was back to the Future 3 is that it was a pal game and they didn't reprogram it for the u.s. release so it runs fast. Pal games running 50 hertz and Us games run at 60 hertz. Shadow of the beast has the same problem and it's unplayable difficult because of it
T2 gets a bad wrap because of the jeep stage. As a 12 year old it was tough. But once you get the hang of it, its a fun game. And if you didnt blow up everything at skynet you would get the bad ending.
I just loved trouncing a friend in Mortal Kombat with Sonya's ultra cheap corner jump kick into flying punch into leg toss for mega damage and some very heavy swearing. Also played the heck out of Alien 3 when it first came out. People squirted about how the SNES version looked better, but I liked th Genesis version more even whilst repetitive as heck. One of the very few, fun, movie tie ins. I hate sports games and consider them a waste of money on every platform.
I had that two games Nba jam and mortal kombat at the time, I bought it for the mk game with the code until a cousin broke it,... with the six button control Mortal kommbat was so damn good
Gotta disagree with Predator 2. Overall I thought it was a pretty solid shooter and one of the better movie tie in games for the Genesis. The Game Gear version was decent as well. Developer Teeny Weeny Games (Wolverine Adamantium Rage, WWF Wrestlemania Steel Cage Challenge) did an overall good job with them.
Oh, come on, that's unfair to Predator 2. It's not exactly Mercs or Soldiers of Fortune, but really the only thing that kills it for me (at least having played it in an emulator) is that it's very clearly designed around being able to fire in all directions a la Smash TV and yet you can't do that. Past that, it's a surprisingly nice-looking game that's fun to blast things in, and given it was published by Flying Edge, who are quite literally the Sega version of LJN, that means it surpassed my expectations pretty easily.
Mortal Kombat for the Sega Genesis was an extremely bad port. There was absolutely no excuse not to include all of the voices, character backgrounds, and the cutbacks the environments recieved was unacceptable. At the very least it should have been in total parity with the Snes port. Even the Sega CD version was severely lacking. Case in point- An indy developer has fixed the original Mortal Kombat for the Genesis and wow, what an improvement. The game looks almost arcade perfect, environments are perfect, colors have been addressed, and every last voice is included in the fixed game.
Supposedly, the BTTF3 game is timed for PAL territories, which runs fast on NTSC systems, owing to the difficulty. I've heard that the European version is timed properly and is entirely playable. Still not a good game, though.
I totally agree on NBA jam. The sequel,TE, on 32x is the best version, but on Genesis it is still a solid game. But with Super High Impact Football, I dissgree. I have it on snes and its about a C. I enjoy the arcade-style gameplay and funny sayings. "Close game! NOT!" But I got it for super cheap and maybe the genesis version is worse. It's just not very deep and not a game you'll get addicted to like NBA Jam.
Mortal Kombat played better on Genesis than on SNES, so it wasn't just the blood code. Yeah, the SNES version looked and sounded better, but that was it, the gameplay wasn't there. And NBA JAM is one of my favorite games of all time, I still have the cart with saved records on it. I tried to like the SNES version because of slightly better graphics (more like animation) and better sound samples, but just couldn't. How can you not have music during a match in this kind of game? PS: I'm not a Genesis fanboy, I love both Genesis and SNES, but when I see one has the advantage over the other, I simply call it out.
Back to the future games seem to be cursed. Whether it's on NES or Genesis. The only exception I know is Super Back to the Future 2 on Super Famicom. It's the only BTTF game that's decent, but never released in the United States. I remember AVGN pointed this one out years ago.
Computer ones also bad. Ghpstbusters was same curse but in 2008 get good game. Bcktofure also get 3d game on 2010 but still only ok game. Curse contune.
Great movie license Games but back then after playıng Jurassic park Sega game all these movie Games feel lack jp game was good as Sega game and many kids more related to jp game then other movie games . Mk1 and T2 best ones but i prefer umk3 which for Genesis amazimg to Run good. T2 truck escape was hard as back to futre 3 game. The late rlease of Jurassic park 2 also best movie game on Genesis even have 3d levels. İ never understand why predator 1 and aliens not have game on Genesis. Rambo 3 also good. Toy story also very good looking even compare to Sonic 3d that time.
Terminator 2 Arcade was so bad on Genesis. D+ in my opinion. I still want to exchange it for a different game. I can deal with the abyssal graphics, but the extremely boring sound is why I still hate it. My Menacer also did not support this game very well...the kids today cry about Nintendo Switch controller drift, well my $70 Menacer had its own version of optical drift while in mid game during T2. Worked fine with the 6-in-1 pack in game, utter trash with Terminator 2. Garbage.
John think back to the Future 3 is bad!!!! you got to play back the future 2 for the Sega Master system. It's garbage I imported this game years ago before it was on RUclips. I was so excited cuz back to Future 2 is my favorite movie in the trilogy
I can compare a movie in a series to its predecessors. I do it with games. Just because a move takes a different approach does not mean it cant be compared.
@@johnhancockretro if aliens was made for the NES it would have been or should have been brilliant with the source material they would have had to work with. @@johnhancockretro if aliens was made for the NES it would have been or should have been brilliant with the source material they would have had to work with. I like both movies for their individualities and unique visions that each director had in their minds I just think alien 3 just lost it's way with how it turned out I think it was in a sort of development hell of sorts. Keep safe John
@@aaronchapman6994 I like Alien 3 Better than Alien Restriction :). Alien 3 is not bad, just going from tons of action to a totally different type of movie was a tough one. I saw AR in the movie theater and thought it was okay until about half way through.
@@johnhancockretro oh yea alien resurrection is a bad movie altogether mostly because of poor acting and a weak farfetched story. Anyway dude enjoy the rest of your night its 3am and absolutely freezing cold here in the UK. Keep the vids going especially your ranking ones.
The Immortal John Hancock!
Mk on gen also had better more responsive gameplay than the snes version
