🤷🏾♂️ No lie
Ain’t that the truth!
So AR’s max was 4/$101,909,150. That’s because of the Arenas Rule. He could only get that from an offer sheet. To offer that, the team offering it has to have the AAV of the total salary available (so if it’s $100M, they need $25M) while LAL can match any sheet, they’re limited to offering him the Early Bird Rights max. In this case that’d be based on the average salary etc.
Here’s what the breakdown is on a max offer sheet:
Year 1: NTMLE ($12,403,000)
Year 2: NTMLE * 1.05 ($13,023,150)
Year 3: The rookie max as if he was 3y in. So 25% of the current cap (.25 * $136M * 1.1 = $37.4M)
Year 4: A 4.5% raise on the Y3 amount ($37.4M * 1.045 = $39,083,00)
Which comes out to 4/$101,909,150. LAL (allegedly) had been leaking for a while that they’d match any offer, and people obviously believed them. While you have less time to consider an offer sheet in the new CBA, everything still happens soooo fast, that tying your money up for even 24-48 hours can be very detrimental unless you’re quite sure you’re going to get the guy. I’m a bit surprised SAS didn’t just send an offer sheet out of spite, but it didn’t happen. If an offer sheet was sent we’d know.
As soon as they could (I’m sure well before tbh) LAL offered AR the max they could give him, with all the bells and whistles. 15% Trade kicker, player option, the thing where he gets like 25% of his salary each year in July then 25% by Oct 1 or whatever it is, all of that. AR obviously waited a bit to see if someone would come in with a random offer sheet, but after a while I’m sure he realized there wasn’t rly the cap out there to do it, and if there was, those teams didn’t have any plans on an offer. So he took the LAL deal.
The official amount he signed for is a 3+1 for 4/$53,827,872. Y1 is $12,015,150. Y4 is a PO for $14,898,786. He also received a 15% trade kicker, a PO as I mentioned before it was signed, they’d give him the up front $, and they did. 25% July, 25% by Oct 1st.
There you go JJ. I’m sure you know a lot of this, but the CBA was literally distributed to teams pretty much last minute (they had term sheet obv, but the full document) and we didn’t know the exact max early bird rights offer yet. Also the cap did go up from 134 to 136 very shortly before FA so that boosted the amount of course.
Love your work. ✌️

Top quality comment.
Best contract value of the offseason.
Don't think I've ever learned so much in a yt comment before hahaha. This is an awesome explanation
Turns out to be a very, very smart move telling everyone they would match any offer. No one wants to bother going through the paperwork if they believed LA was telling the truth. Lakers keep winning.
TY for breaking this down! Much appreciated.
Lakers kept the key players of Reeves, Rui and D'Lo. They added Vincent, Prince and Hayes. Rob did a great job of keeping some of the core players from last's season at the right value and added new pieces which could help this team. They just need to sign one more Center and that should be good.
They should bring dwight back on a vet min
They need a center
We bringing in Tristian Thompson or Mo Bamba back! Jaxon Hayes is young, he should play alot of stater mins as center. We just need a backup to come in play like 10-15 mins.
They do still have Bamba don't forget. I'm sure he can play some center
Didn’t they also get Cam Reddish. He shd be a nice addition as well
Austin Reaves reminds me a lot of Manu Ginoblii. Very savvy scorer, very good playmaker, high ball IQ.
I’m a spurs fan and I can see that a lil bit
That’s a good comp actually
Glad other people can see that.
Travels way less
Manu had the best Eurostep in NBA history, but Austin is on the way his footwork is why he looks so good on the floor. Manu was so fast and his footwork was top notch overall athleticism he has a resume of guys he put on posters. Austin Reeves has a long way to go to get there athletically.
Gonna miss dennis and Lonnie. Cant forget their invaluable contributions. Lonnie literally took over g4 against gsw.
The moves rob made at the deadline were great, but the emergence of austin reeves after bron got hurt is really what made the deals rob made look even better. Austin reeves deserves every bit of that contract and more.
he needs to have an opportunity to take the last shot. I know its LBJ but hes trash at game winners no matter how many times people say he has the most game/clutch winning shots.
@@israymervalentin-arias6313 Lebron shot 30.8% in the clutch last playoffs ( NBA defines as field goals in the 5 minutes of a game within 5 pts). 🥶
I think having Bron and AD mentor Hayes will help his game plus they got Phil Handy on their staff still
Shannon Sharpe & JJ should start their own show. They would be #1 in the world
That's a great idea. And Skip guest-calling in once every few months (just for the laughs) would be a nice touch too.
Shannon is obnoxious.... keep him away from jj
I don’t think y’all realize that skip was the person that created all the fireworks, controversy, drama and entertainment. JJ is not that.
You want him doing soap opera?
@@MumrikDK No. I said start their own show. Which means they can create whatever type of show they want. Such a weird question buddy
Credit to Jeanie Buss for giving Rob the go ahead to dish out that much money. We wondered what big pieces the Lakers would lose but turns out they brought close to everyone back AND added pieces
Pelinka need to be fired, this team is a mess. Everybody they brought back hurt them in the playoff.

With endorsements Austin Reaves will make his money he is in a huge market in LA.
Honestly this roster has unlimited lineups, PGS Reaves Dlo Vincent(all can shoot and make plays) Vando Rui Prince(all great defenders and decent shooters) you can interchange these 6 guys into any lineup with Bron and AD
I would like to see them play some lineups with Lebron at the PG position.
Lebron
Reddish/Prince
Rui
Vando
Davis
Small nitpick: Vando can't shoot very well. Heck of a defender, but there's a reason teams were always sagging off him in the corners during the playoffs. Still excited about this team. Tons of options.
@@glennwerner566exactly. Vando is an excellent defender and hustle guy, but he's not a great shooter at all
@@MBRoa22 yeah, he's not even a decent shooter. He's just a bad shooter bu he makes up with his incredible energy and perimeter defense.
@@srtghost3842I doubt Reddish or Prince play sg. They may fill in for a few mins but that's about it.
JJ Redick is excellent. I can see him branching off espn and become just as huge as Pat McAfee.
AR was absolutely waiting for that monster offer from a team with cap space, either Spurs or Rockets, but it wasn't there because teams knew Lakers were going to match it. They didn't want to tie up their cap space waiting for the Lakers to match. Combine that with the fact that he loves playing with the Lakers and grew up a huge Kobe fan, it was a no brainer for him. Plus he's young enough where he can decline his player option for the 4th year and sign for more then.
His AR1 shoes have purple and gold on them we knew he was gunna stay lol
If he was worth a lot more, he should have held out for more. He may not be coming off a good playoff run the next time.
Russell played terrible when the Lakers needed him the most in the playoffs. I like the fact that they didn't break the bank to re-sign him. I still wish there was a better option out there someone more reliable. Maybe we'll see what happens and how he plays next season. I think he's better suited for a running team and not a half-court offense.
he only played bad in the nuggets series, if ham splits the minutes well between him and vincent, dlo will play a lot better
You don't know the Lakers very well. They are a running team. They try to run on fast breaks every time they can.
@@inchuywetrust579 His numbers say otherwise. He was terrible in the playoffs. Go see for yourself.
@mikmaks7393 I know the Lakers very well. D'Angelo is better with younger athletic players like he had on the Nets when he made the all-star game. There's a reason why he struggled in the playoffs when the game slowed down. He could barely break anyone down and get his shot off. He looked average, I'm really waiting to see what happens next season.
@@JSmith-kh4vo interesting take because people say he likes to play slow but you’re right in a sense. I feel like he needs to be more of a sixth man especially in the playoffs where offense can’t run more through him. He can’t and isn’t good enough to have the offense run through him in the playoffs. Especially with Lebron he can’t just have the ball much.
He needs to be more consistent off-ball which he has shown to do very well at times.
I love what Rob did this offseason. Taurean Prince is a sneaky good pick up for us.
Prince hit threes in the playin game in LA, hopefully he’ll be a better shooter for the lakers than Beasley
Especially for the bi annual too
Prince and play SF\PF
Rui is our 6th man tho
@@Nooneshouldknowmeway better than TB was!
When JB doesn't get involved like she did with getting and trading Russ - Rob does really good. Remember he had Buddy and Demar lined up but was forced to go Russ. Then he had Buddy and Miles lined up till she said no. Rob knows what he's doing if JB just gets out the way.
Thanks so much JJ for everything you do for us and yourself in this business
you gotta shave your head, Tommy. its over, my guy.
To me like JJ said. The signings are great. Retaining D Lo, Rui and AR is major and Prince is sold. Gabe should know down some of those open shots Dennis missed and Hayes is a young Javale. But the best thing to me is all of these contracts are also still moveable.
Austin Reaves was a huge Kobe and Lakers fan growing up, probably a major factor on taking a slimmer deal to stay on his favorite team growing up
The lakers paid him as much as they were allowed. Puzzlingly, no one in the league made a higher offer they had to match. That being said, austin could’ve probably played harder to get and waited longer for that
Yea since Kobe died he was veeyones favorite player now haha
@YJP23 his nickname growing up was hillbilly kobe stop it bro you just hatin
He got a shoe deal too so he’ll make that money on the back end.
Lebron will just make up the difference under the table
other than Rui and Reaves, the majority of those signings are one-and-done. They are really in a win-now mode.
They’ll flip the roster again at the deadline lol
@@matjr331 It depends on how the team performs
Rob has done it again, excellent job. Love the retaining and the additions
Don't Ever Disrespect Me Comparing Austin Reeves To Grayson Allen !! Ya Heard!
Jj is on point about Austin Reaves if u watch the Lakers consistently this season you would know how smart of a player Austin Reaves was and that’s what got him that contract.
Caruso walked so Reaves could run😂
Other than the fact that they are gritty white boys, not really. Reeves has much better facilitating and scoring, Caruso was 1st defenses team.
I hope Austin doesn’t hit a wall. A lot of guys have breakout seasons and then tape study shows their tendencies.
Playing with Bron and AD will make his potential to hit a wall less likely because teams will still not be able to focus that much on him because you have to respect Bron and AD that much still. Plus LA is such a balanced team now, it will make it harder for an entire team to do so unless they have a singular player they can leave on him to limit Reaves.
A nice part of Austin’s game is getting to the free throw line. He has decent size he can bait smaller guards and get himself going rather then being a tough shot maker like a Poole
He is not Jordan Poole stop it
It's funny to hear people talk like Russ was a great fit for the Clippers. Russ didn't look that good when Kawhi and PG was on the court. They started benching him in the 4th. It wasn't until the injuries and he was the only one left. As the #1 he made some noise in the playoffs and looked like himself but wasn't enough to do anything.
I think Austin just wants to ball for the lakers. They know what he can do, and when someone like lebron values you? Well Austin is a smart enough kid to see the reward isn’t just a contract, it’s a chance to learn from one of the best in one of the most legendary organizations
This is such BS. These same guys will be blaming these same FA and Pelinka for the Lakers underachieving. AD is receiving the same Bron-affect that K Love, Bosh, Wade and Kyrie have all been targeted with by the media. These same guys will be trumpeting the same old “Bron didn’t have enough talent” song after the AS break.
Do u have a mixtape of dat song ?? Asking for a friend 😅🤣
hate to see it but teams need to build again with some bigs to Bully Joker cause that team gonna be so solid for the next couple years and Joker just dominates
Btw, he's young. That's the big win of the Lakers. I believe they weren't gonna win anything without signing him simply because that was easy value out of 1 young guy. Reeves was very necessary, since basically, he's the cheapest roi investiment.
I feel like salary don’t matter if your marketable on the Lakers. Which he is extremely marketable
I'm not buying the Lakers yet. They kept everyone they needed, but they didn't get anyone that takes them to the next level
What if their returned core and developed chemistry takes them to the next level?
I somewhat disagree, they got upgrades in all their rotation players. The team last season made it to the conference finals, I see them getting there again this new season. I don’t think they’re better than the nuggets and I they didn’t get any better so I think it’ll come down to how these young guys develop this season with the lakers and how they fit in their system
@@WhatsGoodLuI think they got closer to Denver due to them loosing brown

@@Staywoke1988 glad he someone else’s problem now 😅
@@SSJRome Well I would take Westbrook at the Lakers with his current contract. 2 years 8M? Damn... we got him at 47M.
Casuals don't understand that Clippers got him for a VetMin last season and now they got him for 8M 2 years. If he cost the Clippers 47M they would be as bad as the Lakers were cause they would basically have 3 superstars + a bunch of vet min guys. And given all PG and Kawhi load management they would stink.
Jj did you add another yr for father time.Thunder, Jazz, Wolves, Kings all are young, they gained playoff experience and confidence. Lakers' top PLAYERS LEBRON and AD are not playing 70 games first. Injuries will plague them. Bank on it...
Why are they comparing AR with other white players? He resembles a lot more black players to me. He's a mixture of CJ and Kemba to me.
JJ is gonna be a GM here soon. Dude knows what he’s doing in regard to player break down.
Lakers are always a free agency spot but they did sign a lot of good players
“Good due” who’s shoves his wife around, okay..
The Lakers weren't good enough to beat Denver and they still aren't good enough because they have a trash head coach.
Love jj, makes sense and just great delivery. Keep it up JJ
Amen J.J. Spot on on everything you say.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Give us a break JJ. Lmao.
I prefer Schroder over Vincent, but otherwise they did pretty well.
What about my Pacers ??? No one’s really talking about what they’re doing this offseason but adding Bruce Brown , Obi Toppin , and their two first round picks Walker and Sheppard not to mention they got Isaiah Wong at 55 so I mean I don’t think they could’ve done much better considering no one really loves playing in Indy anyways . But hopefully that changes with all this new talent, exciting times for Indy sports
The one off-season you don’t hear about LeBron meddling in it and what do you know, they had a pretty good free agency period. Y’alls need to give Rob Palinka some credit, he was getting major heat but everybody forgets he was cleaning LeGMs mess.
DLo was not consistent, but Troy Brown 38% from 3 and they dropped him from the playoffs...it sure looks different for us internet coaches than for Darvin.
Imagine if the Lakers didn't make so many bad moves the past 4 years... oh well.
Need to see them get a defensive Center. Ad doesn't want to play the 5. The new kid has athleticism but I haven't heard anything about him being a great defender. Somebody has to be there to put a body on jokic.
Jj casually saying Colin don’t know what he’s talking about lol
Lonnie Walker would the best scorer off the bench for the Lakers this year. Really my only big problem with their moves so far
He was good when he played but the Lakers still played great without him too
I know talk about disrespect! Walker saved the Lakers bacon in the playoffs!
@vanilla_badger yes I am not saying Lebron & AD cant possibly form a good team without Lonnie
But the goal is obviously to make the team as great as you can. There's 0 reason to not bring him back after what he showed last season, combined with his contract 2.5 mil, combined with the fact that, like I said he would literally be our best scorer off the bench
Literally his only weakness that everybody focused on was defense, & he played great D in the playoffs
Especially when we're giving Cam Reddish that money.. who was only ever been bad, lazy, his teams don't want him wherever he goes, doesn't play D, has a broken jumper.. really hasn't proven to have 1 plus NBA skill
@@the.NDExperience didn’t say you said that g, but I think Lonnie just doesn’t fit into the rotation, it’s not about him not being talented. They are just too top heavy at guard, scoring wise. There’s only so much you can do, and if you’re gonna give minutes to someone off the bench it’s gonna have to be a big man coming In for AD, and then Rui, who might just be as efficient if not better at scoring then Lonnie. There’s only so much they can do with the rotation they have.
They kept core n got more 😅what’s next
I would say LA has a lot to offer Portland for Dame.
Lakers don't want to give up their young talent for a one dimensional player who takes up all their cap.
I wished they kept Schroder. He balled out
Just remember how great you all thought this free agency period was for the Lakers when DLo goes for 4, 2 and 2 in their last loss of the season again.
nah, lost schroder and brought in vincent who is a better shooter, but thats pretty much it, no significant upgrade overall.
IT A UPGRADE THERE BETTER THAN NUGGETS.
They brought in everyone on reasonable contracts
It's not just the fact they brought the same guys, it's about how good value of deals they were able to get while bringing the guys back
@@adrianpheiffer9960 did they though? 17mil for dlo was not necessary in my eyes, cam reddish is horrible but apart from that they did fine with getting the rest back.
I mean I’d say Jaxson Hayes is better than a 500yo TT and an injured Bamba. Reddish is a cheap (minimum) flier. They also added a 1st round pick in the teens w JHS, & Max Lewis who was a 2nd rounder that was mocked to go mostly in the bottom of the 1st.
Losing Lonnie is unfortunate, but with the additions should more than make up for it, the added continuity, and just one more year of improvement from the young guys. Could see a guy like Max Christie end up seeing some playing time as a contributor, never know.
Oh also almost forgot about Taurean Prince for cheap. He’s not a great defender, but he’s not awful, is like 6”8, and a good catch and shoot 3P shooter. Just a nice F depth piece. There’s also at least one more signing to be made. It’ll be the minimum or close to it, but you never know who can help.
I’m not a LAL fan, just sayin’. Also I think bringing all of the core pieces back plus a cpl upgrades will help. Not saying they got crazy better, but def better, and another year as teammates should help a lot.
Jj sign for 2k with the lakers
No Lonnie Walker smh
A better comparison for Austin Reaves than Grayson Allen would be jalen Brunson.
I'm gonna go with OKC Harden on offense and not sure who he compares to on defense but it is definitely better than harden lol

Great analysis from JJ. Austin & Schooder were both $ in tight situations late in games. My one concern about Austin Reeves is on defense; it seemed like the Grizzlies and the Nuggets were trying to single Austin out. I can remember a number of plays where Aaron Gordon or Bane got the ball down low on him and scored pretty easily. Against the Warriors, Davis didn’t have to focus as much on Greene and Looney and could dissuade Klay, Wiggins, or Poole from seeking out a similar matchup near the rim. Thoughts?

A guy who 3 teams gave up on and is 6'8 averaging 3 rebounds a game. Somehow signing these 3 guys is considered winning all of free agency. Adding these 3 guys will beat Denver? Stop it. I laughed so hard when I saw his AR15 take. Been watching Reaves his entire career. Easily worth 100m. Stoked we got him only 56
Love you JJ but until they sign a true old school rough rebounder and defender at center so AD don’t have to play 5 a lot I’ll wait
Most every team has a scrappy blue collar player, AR is a scrappy blue collared skilled player. Lakers signed Reeves while he is budding and did it immediately but Schoder and Vincent would have been a deadly combo. D Lo got shook by Denver’s guards. They talked him into pressing but I guess his pace is better for LeBron, I guess
I watched that Colin take on AR15 and it reminded why I don't watch his show because he is absolutely clueless and the things he gets right are said on The Volume RUclips channel by others and he acts like they are his takes. regarding NBA he is the worst sports journalist I have ever heard and am SHOCKED he has a show on FS1
Austin Reeves is basically Jeremy Lin. He had a moment.
how ignorant
In other words your saying I don't know basketball.
You know why the Lakers free agency was great! They kept key young players under the age of 28 who played alot last year who are at least 24 years old and has 4 or more years of experience who aided the Lakers in making the playoffs and making it to the conference finals. Why is this important. Rui, Vando and Dlo got to the Lakers after the All star break! Reaves was already there! This team with them and the free agent they signed will have whole offseason and preseason to get more chemistry. They made to the WCF and one step away from playing for a title. All the guys they resigned or sign are under the age of 30 and if the Lakers have success, win a title and they improve individually for that team success, they will get bigger contracts in the next few years!

Gabe Vincent is absolutely not worth 20m. He's a system player who will go back to his regular season mediocrity in this upcoming season. He's tiny and inefficient.
Worst moves by lakers in Pelinka era. Let Lopez walk for nothing, traded depth for Westbrook. Can’t think of much else. The Westbrook trade ruined like 2 seasons
JJ would do way better in life if he just stopped listening to Colin Cowherd. Cowherd just doesn't know basketball and probably doesn't even watch it. He talks about it because it's the 2nd most popular sport and he has to.
