Our last video was an analysis of The Last of Us Part II's narrative. In this episode I actually review the game with, you know, jokes and stuff. They say the best medicine is laughter, and after this depressing game I think we could all use a little memes. #tlou2 #TheLastOfUs #NaughtyDog

People can stop explaining The Lord of the Rings to us. The point of the joke is that all of the plot hole questions we asked are easily answered because they aren't plot holes. Apparently my extreme sarcasm and Touch Fuzzy Get Dizzy music wasn't obvious enough 😂

Maybe that was my problem. I played Joel as stealthy as possible....I played Ellie as stealthy as possible....and I played Abby as stealthy as possible, and it wasn't as fun. The game trained you to be overly resourceful, so i never wanted to waste any ammo if possible

    • @marvelousmeh2077
      @marvelousmeh2077 3 года назад +73

@@bobbyteenager4e The difference in gameplay was actually great. It makes distinct differences from them base on their story. Abby was one of the WLFS best fighters/soldiers and is well trusted and respected in their faction because of this. That's why her Gameplay is more action heavy. She also has stronger weapons because as mentioned she's one of their best. You want your best to have the best tools.
Ellie never focused herself of physical combat and relies on basic survival skills that she learned. That's why although she is not well versed in combat she can clear out a room methodically. Like a beautiful serial killer who also murders dogs.... XD

I just realized something ironic! So you mention how the gameplay as Ellie feels more stealth-based and strategic, while the gameplay as Abby is more about smashing people's face (due to their respective weapons and upgrades). And you know, it's very much true. HOWEVER, when you're fighting Ellie as Abby, you have to be strategic and hiding, and play her as you usually play Ellie. Meanwhile, when Ellie fights Abby, it's a full-on melee battle of them punching and stabbing! I just find it interesting that both times those two fights, you fight on your opponent's rules, and yet you win both times!

I just finished this game this weekend. I initially wasn't pleased with the amount of play time that Abby was getting (I mean, we've spent 1.5 games "bonding" with Ellie as the character), but after playing all the way through - I have a deep appreciation for what Naughty Dog did. If you walk into this game expecting a zombie, action adventure on rails, you're going to be disappointed. If you expect another cliche happy ending, you will be disappointed. The truth is, in a world where we are becomingly increasingly numb to any layer below quest markers, point and shoots and collectibles, this game does something not many can.... incite an emotional response (or more aptly, rip it out of you). This isn't Uncharted: Ellies Fortune, but rather a deep dive into the psyche and trauma of how decisions can manifest and change a person. It's also a technical marvel with masterful choreography.
That said, it's not without questionable decisions. There were a few times where characters acted in a seemingly awkward way that seemed to only serve as plot devices. Those instances were far outweighed by sum of the overall experience for me. No game is perfect, but this one deserves its 10/10 IMO, but it's not a game for everyone.

      @@pepolord8322 Sure.
Mel's decision to pretty much do anything with how pregnant she was. Given how established the whole operation was at the stadium, any mother-to-be would likely choose to stay safe and have the child, rather than run out into fanatic and zombie infested zones.
Tommy's decision to badger Ellie about going to find abby. He had already accepted that she would live and convinced Ellie that was OK at the theater, then shows up and and tries to guilt trip her into tracking her down... seemed to be a plot device more than anything.
Lev running back to the island alone, knowing how things were, seemed foolish for someone who had been focused on survival 1 day prior. Again felt like a plot device to get abby to the island.
Thats a couple off the top of my head, I could probably think of a couple more, but I'm tired.

Mel's part is weird to me specially because it didn't even have to happen, plotwise. Seems like she goes just so the game can stablish her cautious relationship with Abby, but there were other ways of doing that...

@@ccallaghan84 Had a discussion before about this, but Mel isn't exactly the brightest character in the game. On one hand, it could be considered admirable that Mel would want to go to the FOB to still take up her medical duties in her condition, but as the story progresses, it comes off more foolhardy when she tears down Abby after having rescued Yara and Lev and tries to attack Ellie, who just shot Owen after he attacked her and failed.
Tommy's the only one here I fully disagree with you on. If you look at the before and after, Tommy was fully functional and willing to get Ellie, Jesse, and Dina back to Jackson. Then suddenly Abby comes along, kills Jesse, beats down a now PTSD-ridden Ellie, almost kills Dina, and leaves Tommy disabled, partially blind, and possibly with less mental capabilities due to the gunshot. Not even taking into account what the damage did to his relationship with Maria and likely with the whole of the community. Push came to shove, and Tommy fell hard.
Yeah, Lev returning back was the moment where I thought "Okay, we can start wrapping this up now, we know this is how Ellie gets Owen and Mel alone". The only things I can think of in the writers' defense is that he's a 13 year old, and he was still very attached to the Seraphites (who he refused to hear called Scars) and thought his mom would be the only possible person who could be talked into leaving, too. But I could see that as pushing it.

    • @pepolord8322

@@iisanulquiorrahara8 About Tommy, I think its also worth mentioning that the version of him we see in Jackson in the beggining of the game - very calm, moderate - was also hiding his true intentions. He was probably much more consumed by rage than he seems at that point.
Later in Seattle, he's willing to go back, true, but to save Dina's life.
Still, I think Mister 2 raises a good point, because afterwards, even if Tommy was still wishing to hunt Abby, I don't think it fits his character very much to push Ellie to go instead of himself - even if he couldn't. To risk her life instead of his

A little note that does not necessarily disprove the thesis the reviewers are bringing up. The examples of plot contrivance in Star Wars and Lord of the Rings and how they compare to this are not very good examples.
They are fantasy stories in which you accept certain mystical elements as part of it. The ring corrupts the bearer and is shown to be heavy throughout and Star wars has a mystical force that connects all living things and a bit of a Destiny concept in it. The Last of Us does not that I know of.

      Dully noted.
      ...
Seriously though: the whole point of Ellie's first part was to show that vengeance leads to dark path. The more you kill you targets, the more you start to see how Ellie is capable of horrible things to get back to Abby.
When you then play Abby, you realize that this "monster" you were chasing is actually a human who went the exact same path Ellie is going through, seeking revenge even though it ruined her life. It also shows that she's a normal human who makes mistakes, has dreams, lovers, etc... It humanizes her so that you don't see her as only a target anymore, but a real human you ended up liking.
I really don't understand how people can still hate on Abby so much after that. I feel like people who don't understand that just lack empathy, and I am not even someone who's really in touch with my feelings compared to a lot of people.

I've definitely been interested in people taking issue with the story contrivance of Joel and Abby running into each other at the start. Like, it is certainly convenient for the story, but, as you point out, that sort of convenience happens all the time in popular media. Honestly, it is how a ton of stories get started. One of my favorite shows, Avatar: The Last Airbender has what could be considered a super contrived/convenient introduction with Sokka and Katara only finding Aang's iceberg because Katara got mad at Sokka and did some reckless accidental waterbending that revealed it and on top of that, Zuko, the dude whose life mission is to track the Avatar, just so happens to be at the south pole to see the energy of it in the distance. Hell, even the start of the first Last of Us has this same sort of thing with Joel and Tess run into Marlene because she just happens to be looking for Robert at the exact same time as them. The purpose of these choices is to get the plot to start moving forward. They are inciting incidents and there isn't supposed to be some massive build up to them. It really feels like people are trying to find an Objective(tm) reason as to why the game has Bad Writing, and in doing so, they hold this story to a different standard than others.

I kinda feel like the overall concept was forgiveness. Especially between Ellie and Joel and how she didn’t get a chance to fully remedy things between before it was too late, Abby and Lev and their faction wars. But in the end whatever lessons of life Naughty Dog where trying to represent was ultimately overshadowed by hate, which is why it seems the theme is self destructive hatred. I’m not complaining that Joel died, his death is obviously a powerful emotional motivator, but unfortunately all decent aspects seemed to be met with HOW he died not WHY.

    • @Th3W4tchman
      @Th3W4tchman 3 года назад +39

Joel's death is certainly debatable. In my opinion, considering he betrayed humanity by preventing a cure from being made and killing may Fireflies and their leader in the process, his death was pretty much confirmed in this one. Many people say that he died an out of character death. Here's how I took it, Joel is no longer on the run, smuggling, or any of that stuff he did in the first game. He's basically settling down in this one after so many years after what happened at the end of the first game. So, his awareness dropped in my opinion. This is not mentioned, but I think maybe Tommy told Joel to be more approachable and lend a helping hand to people that are in need/passing by Jackson. I think what also established that comfort zone is that he thought killing most of the Fireflies and killing their leader "dismantled" the Fireflies group. Meaning, no one would pursue him and even if they did, wouldn't know where he would end up. I don't know though, just a theory.

@@Th3W4tchman To me this is what they were going for but the main issue is they pulled the trigger way too early. The death being a few hours in didn't give enough time to establish Joel as a fundamentally new character/person than who he was in years earlier. IMO a bunch of the flashback stuff should have been more fleshed out and front-loaded at the start of the game with sprinklings of Abby and her motives here and there. I hear some people say that it should have been at least half way through the game. I personally disagree with this as it wouldn't give Abby the time she needs but I believe having the event happen somewhere around 4-6 hours in would have been good. It would have allowed for them time to show the changes in Joel. As you said - no longer on the run, drop in awareness, more mentions from characters , add a segment where he does help people or nearly gets caught by something due to distraction after the event with ellie (the truth) and simply his age catching up to him whereby the setup of his death would then make more sense.

So I just finished my 3rd playthrough of this game. Now.. in the first playthrough I spend the time that I had with Abby with absolute disgust and hate. I wasn't able to think objectively and see beyond my curtain of hatred. I couldn't get behind the idea of spending half of my game time on a game that I thought was supposed to be about Joel and Ellie with a new character that at this point I only wanted to murder. I rushed through Abby's part as quickly as I could. I ended up saying things like "Okay I can see what Neil Druckmann tried here but it didn't work for me. The story was okay but I was disappointed with the choices they did in the narrative structure, but the rest of the game is a masterpiece". I went into my second playthrough with the objective to be... objective! and approach the whole Abby scenario with open-mindedness! And it worked! I started liking Abby and I started to empathize with her story. I finished the game with a much more satisfying feeling towards the story and its characters. The 3rd playthrough only strengthened that feeling and it came to a point where I wasn't so sure anymore if I enjoyed Ellie's or Abby's story more. I just love Abby's section with Lev. I also feel like the side cast of this game is pretty underrated. A lot of people call characters like Owen and Jesse trash just because they don't play a MAJOR role in the game. I feel like these characters perfectly tied into the entire story. They may not have been the most influential on the story but the way they came and went tied in so well. I just wanted to get that off of my chest and say that this game is a masterpiece. The story is still not close to the first part but it is a damn good story for sure. And like I said before. Gameplay, graphics, soundtrack, animation work, details, world-building, etc are a masterpiece.

The story worked for me first time through but on my second play-through I was surprised by the details I'd forgotten or misremembered by the end of my first play-through. The first thing that really stood out was that Abby wakens up at the start of the game she's just a bad dream. Now I immediately knew what the dream was and it explained why she was so determined to go off on her own and why Joel saving her meant so little. Her dad's murder was fresh in her mind.
It was also interesting how conversations that seemed throw away first time through took on a deeper meaning when you knew what was to come. For example, some of Dina's conversation with Ellie in Seattle is trying to suss out how Ellie will react to Dina telling her she's pregnant.
I also tend to play stealthy so I played Abby like Ellie first time through. That was a mistake. Ellie is a ninja but Abby is a tank and playing her stealth meant her section dragged a little. Second time through I stayed stealth with Ellie and went gung ho with Abby and had a blast. Every time I watch a play-through, there's always a something I spot that I missed. The game is incredible.

Also, that explains why people love the first because, simply, it's universally easier to love a story about love. But, for me, as much I love the first, lying to Ellie at the end , taking that choice away from her and making everyone's death meaningless left me with a sinking feeling. So with that said this sequel absolutely did the story of the first justice.

I've noticed a trend lately on RUclips... Videos titled "I gave The Last of Us part 2 a second chance" "I tried the Last of Us Part 2 again and liked it" "The Last Of Us Part 2 - why it's great"... Seems like NOW the people who trashed the game when it came out are starting to come around and realize the game is a masterpiece, but honestly it kind of makes me mad!!! They hated on the game for ridiculous reasons, and now that The Last of Us is popular again they're praising it and saying how amazing it is. Not sure if anyone else has noticed this trend but within the last like 2 months I've been seeing videos like those pop up everywhere.

I did, many recent videos about it, probably because the show, but the worst about it is the hordes of haters that (seems to me) are hunting all day for new stuff about it just to spread their hate, how the hell years later these people still have the patience to spread their bul$hit all over the internet, i mean, there is a LOT, really LOTS of worst games out there but never this hate crap on them.

Meh... I felt bad about killing NPC's in fallout and elder Scrolls because they had impact on the world, you kill a vendor and they are gone, or refuse to let my companions die in mass effect because they are a permanent scar on the other games and stories if you let such good characters.
TLOU2 the scars are just generic bad guys, a lot of the new characters fall a little flat, didn't like Ellie anymore, didn't like Abby, Jessie and Owen seemed alright but there wasn't enough to get invested in them and really care when they die. Just my opinion though.

And I love that you also tried to not fight at the beach. In Last of Us1 some people complained that you as the player didn't have the choice in the end. IMO that made sense because it is not an RPG but you play written, defined (and great) characters. Those two hated each other, went through hell and became like father and daughter. In the end of the second part it is the same: it's not about what I want, I have to play what Ellie wants, feels and does. And Ellie didn't see Abbey's perspective.

Overall, it was silly for both Joel and Tommy to trust Abby and her group on the spot instead of leaving. Last time Joel met a stranger he almost beat him to death just to keep himself and Ellie safe. Only reason he let him live was cause he had a kid too. Joel is cruel. But cunning. I think Nakeyjakey made a really interesting point in his video about the game, which I got reminded of when Matt deliberately failed the quicktime event in the final confrontation. TLOU2 is a game that uses the interactive medium to try and make the player feel bad for doing certain actions. But the player is just strapped into the rollercoaster, with no real choices about who lives and who dies.
I think this is a groundbreaking story, and it goes without saying that a game that looks this good and plays this well, would have been a lot more consistently liked if it didn't have a significant story. But I'm not sure the cinematic rollercoaster of a Naughty Dog game was the right choice to make the story work. If a player wants to make a different choice in gameplay (like with Nora or the fights between Abby and Ellie) but can't, that doesn't feel good.

No, you don't have to personally feel bad for anything. You're a passenger. This isn't a game with choices.
