    The biggest sin of this season, for me, is the fact that Nickelodeon cut their funding for episode 8. My understanding is that it was meant to be about Kuvira's tragic backstory and setting up the motivations for the conqueror she became.
    Instead we got a cheap flashback episode of clips because the creators didn't want the budget cut to affect staffing or quality of the other episodes. Which was the best choice for an overall shitty situation.

      I really think that it's a damn shame that we didn't get that episode (because, while I like Kuvira, I think that a flashback episode would've done wonders for her as a villain), but I also don't blame them for not wanting to cut staff.

    I think you are right about Toph not being used to being vulnerable; but that's only part of it, I feel. Remember how Toph grew up? Her father was exceptionally overbearing and overprotective and her mother just did whatever her husband said to do. Tht kind of emotional suffocation made Toph go in the extreme opposite direction when raising her own daughters. She just let them do whatever they wanted; they had no real structure or discipline other than themselves. Lin is only strict because she followed Toph into Law Enforcement and Su was just a completely free spirit, with no real boundries. so when Lin says they're done Toph won't argue because she utterly refuses to law down any kind of parental control; that would make her like her own parents - in her mind.

    • @AliAngelpie
      @AliAngelpie 11 месяцев назад +23

      I agree! Also, she does have body insecurities, which she reveals to Katara during their girl's day out after a trio of snobby girls call her a clown. She laughs it off and makes them fall into the river, but then tells Katara while she doesn't care what others think, she's still sometimes uncomfortable in her own skin.

    • @ElMonoFuerte
      @ElMonoFuerte 11 месяцев назад +18

      I feel like two other things come up: 1) Toph is a skilled (possibly the best) Truthseer, being able to tell when anyone is lying, so when Lin is so mad at her, she can tell that Lin isn't being hyperbolic or dramatic: Lin is mad, and hurt, and and believes Toph was a bad mother, it is nothing but pure truth, and Toph is faced with that truth as strong as platinum.
      2) Toph is as master of Neutral Jing: wait until the moment is right, never attack while in a disadvantageous position. Toph's parenting style was hands-off both because of overbearing parents, but also because from the Neutral Jing style, there is no action Toph needs to take with her daughters until they get in real trouble. Su is sent away because of her actions, but it is only as much force as Toph feels is necessary for the situation; her daughter was being foolish, yes, but not criminal, but was clearly not living as well as she could in Republic City. Lin on the other and, was thriving in R.C., was excelling at her work, and as much as she was trying to be Toph, was also solidly her own person: Toph had no need to interfere with Lin's life, not in any way that would make sense to Toph.
      Was Toph right to be so passive? Probably not, though as pointed out in Operation Beifong: Lin and Su turned out great (as much as anyone can), which is all any parent can really hope for. Toph believed in bitter work: things shouldn't be easy and you have to keep trying until you succeed. Earthbending is unyielding, head-on attacks, and neutral jing is waiting and listening for the perfect moment. Younger Mother Toph was too headstrong to really listen to her daughters, and I think Old Mother Toph realizes that she failed when her daughters needed her most, and has regretted it ever since, even if she hasn't been wanting to directly face it. I think Toph went to the Banyan Tree Grove in order to get better at "listening", learning how to be in touch with other people and understanding her own failures by experiencing the connections through the Banyan Tree. She waited until the right time to be able to say what she needed to say and apologize, even knowing it would be too late and would likely not sway her daughters.
      I always wonder if Aang was the one who told her to go to the Banyan Tree Grove: Toph hadn't been there with rest of the Team Avatar, so she'd only have known about it from Aang, Katara, and Sokka. I wonder if one day she was feeling upset about her daughters and talked to Aang and Katara, the only other parents she really knew, and they were like "Toph: your kids are hurt by you and no amount of bending is going to make that go away. You need to see their lives and really know them, before they'll ever be able to forgive you."

When Toph's parents heard Toph's complaints, they immediately dismissed them and doubled-down on their abuse. I don't think Toph really did the same, but she didn't have a way to communicate with her daughters and it took a LONG time for Toph to get to a healthy place with them.

  • @seraphinaaizen6278
    @seraphinaaizen6278 11 месяцев назад +212

    Just in case it's unclear, yeah, Korra and Asami are a couple. The show runners wanted them to kiss but decided against it because they thought the studio would pitch a fit over a lesbian kiss in the show (as it happened, the studio later told them they'd have been fine with it).
    In the follow up graphic novels which continue the story, they're unambiguously a couple. And the other characters (especially Mako) finding out about that is a mini-arc in itself. Mako is surprisingly okay with the fact that two women who dated him in a row have apparently decided that's enough of men.

    • @DocuzanQuitomos
      @DocuzanQuitomos 11 месяцев назад +6

      After all the back and forth they had already gone through with budgets and cuts and stuff... I don't blame them for chosing to avoid another load of possible conflicting meetings (in spite of what the studio later said; once it's on the table, at least one meeting is needed... and who knows if another clip show will come out of it). Needless to say that even with this "open" ending, and an official statement that the couple is canon, to this day they still get flak for this "forced choice" (words of the critics, not mine).
      Mako gets also a lot of flak for no reason (I mean, it's fun he is a bit of a comical relief for many of his poor choices... but he is not an absolute fool as sometimes some sectors want to portray him); we need a bit more canon about Korra and Asami's mentality at the time (if they are already aware of what rocks their boat, or they are just finding out for the first time they like more girls), but Mako from the beginning has been quite mature for several things (after being forced to become Bolin's "father" of sorts); it's not quite surprising he is cool with the fact that two ex partners, that also happen to be friends, end up dating (and that doesn't mean he "broke them" somehow).
      Who knows, even with more time, he could have figured it out on his own, even before the girls did (Mako has proven to be a good detective, even when he is a mess in other things).

    • @seraphinaaizen6278
      @seraphinaaizen6278 11 месяцев назад +11

      @@DocuzanQuitomos The problem with Mako is that the character just doesn't have chemistry with either girl. The relationships felt awkward. The only reason Mako and Korra were together is because "he was the handsome guy". But if you go back through the series, I don't think there's a single scene where the characters gelled. At all. Their personalities are fundamentally different and it just didn't work.
      Korra and Asami fit together much more naturally. This was especially evident during season 3 where the characters spent a lot of time together and they went together on screen very well. The show makers picked up on that, and made the decision to put them together.

    Ozai for firebending
    Amon for non-benders (kinda)
    Unalaq for waterbending
    Zaheer for airbending
    Kuvira for earthbending
    And if you don't want Amon to count as a non-bender, then at the very least Amon represents the Southern Water Tribe and Unalaq represents the North.

    Korra is one of the greatest female protagonists of this generation. Despite her natural gifts, the writers were still able to constantly find ways to challenge her outside of her bending prowess. They still allowed her to be flawed and gave her room to grow mentally and spiritually.
    Most writers these days dont allow their female protagonists to have any weaknesses or vulnerabilities, which ultimately harm their characters to the point where a lot of them are completely unrelatable with their unrealistic traits.

    • @DocuzanQuitomos
      @DocuzanQuitomos 11 месяцев назад +1

      There is another interesting take about this: many criticism to the Colossus says that "it's too far advanced" and that it breaks the shows progression (since you go from the 1920's to full on Megazords; Nat even voiced something like that during the video) but it partially makes sense the outcome was a huge suit (leaving aside ratings and violence and stuff).
      The most acurate parallel to the Colossus in our world would be the Mega Battleships built around those times (with peak during the 1940's). While there are battleships in the show, they are missing a big important piece of any battleship, ever: canons (which is odd, since a battleship was born to be a stable plataform to shoot big shells).
      But then it makes sense: no army, in any of the series has ever used projectile weapons: tanks and mechatanks don't have canons, battleships don't have canons, even smaller ships don't have canons (they have trebuchets), there are not even guns... it seems like bending has shaped the idea of honorable combat to measuring with your opponent in close combat (or, at least, with a huge display of your power to handle a given element); basically, it has to be seen in, some way, as an extension of your body to be "honorable" (mechatanks have elements that disable the person, but not go straight into the kill zone, each one making some paralels to bending techniques).
      Under that logic it makes sense: no one would question the honor of the victory of a bender wearing a giant suit into battle (even when Kuvira could have blown the city to pieces from the mountains as a defensive mechanism, she walks into the city; she is in the battlefield to claim the victory as some unwritten battle code would dictate). Kuvira just took the idea of "body combat" to the extreme.
      I must note, though, I would have loved to see a formal navy battle with canons XD.

    God the ending, the final scene with Korra and Asami, for as tame or platonic it can be read, really was a groundbreaking moment for queer representation in animation and “kids” media. Initially Korra and Asami were meant to be more hinted at (you can still pick up some things, like Korra only writing to Asami, or blushing when they meet for the first time after the time jump) but they had to tone things down. Right after this episode aired the creators confirmed Korrasami online and it made WAVES

It's the story of a girl, Luz Noceda who feels like she doesn't belong in part due to how wrapped up she is in reading stories of witchcraft, finding another world where magic, witches, & demons are real. It unfortunately got cut short, because Disney likes to have series that don't have long story arcs so that they can pick a random episode to air on the Disney channel after their movies. Most fans think it was due to the LGBTQ+ characters, but the series creator, Dana Terrace said that it didn't have to do with that. They were halfway through making season 2 when they learned that Disney had cut it short and they would only have a three episode season 3 to wrap it up.

    Korra really had it rough, both the character and the series. S4 in particular suffered from budget cuts, the back half got taken off TV to be webcast only, and Nickelodeon execs dropped the hammer on the creators' intent for Korra and Asami's relationship. Aang and Katara, actual *children* , got to lock lips in the ATLA finale, but grown adults Korra and Asami were only allowed to hold hands. Mike and Bryan had to release a social media statement so it was clear that the girls were embarking on a romance together. (They're both officially bisexual per word of the creators, btw.) This was all before the likes of Adventure Time, Steven Universe, and The Owl House featured openly lesbian characters, so even TLOK's small hard-won steps were a major achievement for LGBT representation in cartoons. I'm glad you caught onto it! (Some fans are still in denial.)

    Gotta love how Nickelodeon was okay with Zaheer bending the air out of someones lungs and a double murder suicide in season 1, but not with 2 girls kissing.

    I’m so happy you enjoyed this show! And ATLA, of course. Now for the next best show for you to explore, I think you ought to give a chance to Blue Eye Samurai. It’s the best thing to come out of 2023. Much more adult in theme and content, but so rewarding.

    I loved watching your journey with korra. This show has a big unnecessary hate, sure there's is some problems with s2 and all. But there are a lot of good things in these last seasons and also in season 1. It's an amazing show and I'm glad you like it

    I think that if Kuvira's attack on Korra and Bataar Jr. had succeeded that she would have spent most nights of the rest of her life crying herself to sleep.

    I remember recommending that you watch ATLA on one of your videos a while back and I was so happy and hyped when you uploaded your first reaction. I had a feeling you’d really like it, it was awsome to see you enjoy the show and get connected to the world and its characters that I and many others grew up with. I was equally as excited when you decided to watch LOK and now we’re at the finale. It’s been a great journey. Thank you so much for embarking on it with us. There should be more ATLA animated projects and the live action is coming soon but I’d recommend watching Attack on Titan at some point. The plot is amazing and imo it’s one of the greatest anime’s and animated shows in general alongside with ATLA and LOK

    In the comics (same writers as the show), Korra and Asami become an item. It both of their first same sex relationship, so they're understandably unsure how to navigate coming out. The first person to figure out that they are a couple is Kya (Tenzin's waterbender sister), who comes out to them herself and offers to be there for them to talk to any time they need it.
    Also, Zhu Li runs for President and wins.

    I'm crying right along with you Natalie! I love this show so much and the final two episodes hit HARD! The ATLA and TLOK universe is so rich and beautiful, but part of what makes these shows so special--along with the amazing writing, acting, animation, direction, world building, etc.--is the incredible characters that inhabit it. Just like with ATLA, I felt like LOK did such a great job with each character's individual arc while still serving the larger story. I love that each character had amazing moments of growth and development and I love how they work together as a team. Not only do they all become insanely talented benders, fighters, inventors, etc., but we also see them grow into wonderful human beings. And it isn't that they aren't relatable to start with, because all of them are, but they grow and mature in ways that I think is really inspiring. We see Korra go from someone who is impulsive and hot-headed to someone who operates with empathy and compassion; Mako goes from someone who is closed-off and easily frustrated to someone selfless and more willing to be vulnerable and open; Bolin learns humility and maturity; the airbender kids become strong strategists and fighters and learn to work as a team; Tenzin grows to be an even better mentor who is more willing to let go and trust; Lin and Su reconnect and bond, letting the past go and moving forward as a family; Varrick has a Tony Stark like arc where he deflates his ego and becomes a team player and opens himself up to love. I could write an essay on why I love this show and go into each individual character arc. I loved watching your reactions and hearing your thoughtful, funny, and insightful comments! 💛

    I love Korra. As someone who has struggled with anger issues my whole life, seeing Korra grow into an empathetic young woman always resonated with me more strongly than Aang's more generic "hero needs to gain confidence to save the world" story. I love Aang too, don't get me wrong, and his is one of the best examples of that type of story I've ever seen. But I really appreciate Korra's arc. And I'll never forget or forgive how so many people dissuaded others from watching Legend of Korra because they said it sucked compared to The Last Airbender. And knowing how these things work, I'm sure when the next Avatar comes out, those same people will claim they loved Korra all along and the new series sucks. But I digress, this is a beautiful show with a beautiful finale. I wish Nickolodeon wasn't a bunch of scum suckers and we could have gotten a kiss to end things but oh well, knowing they're dating in the books is still pretty great lol

    I think it needs to be said how big this last episode was for the LGBTQ+ community. Like yeah, that end was super cute. But it was also 2014. If anything, queer folks were usually elements of individual episodes, and I don't remember any cartoons that aired back then with any LGBTQ+ characters.Then, we got this end scene. Then, the creators confirmed that yes, Korra & Asami were beginning their romantic relationship in the Spirit World. Then, that vacation was actually depicted in creator-written comics after. Like, it was huge for us. The Legend of Korra walked so She-Ra & the Princesses of Power (which I think you'd really enjoy, Natalie) could run. And then, in just 6 months after the finale aired, queer people won the right to marry each other. That was a good year. Yes, there are SO many flaws in this show, but when we look at what it did in the TV landscape, we see that it was really important in the grand scheme of things, huh?

    The best thing I’ve ever heard is this Avatar is designed to stand as a direct opposite to Aang and all he stood for. Which makes sense since Aang was such a powerful bender. It would make sense to bring someone who is even more powerful but completely ignoring her spiritual side. So this show serves as “spiritual connection: a journey.”

    I love this show, I know it’s flawed but for some reason it resonates with me more than ATLA though I recognise that it’s probably the better show.
    I’m glad that a lot of the undeserved hate has faded over the years and people are appreciating the show a lot more

    The next time you’re considering an animated show to react to, I highly recommend She-ra (the 2018 show)! The protagonist reminds me a lot of seasons 3-4 Korra, and there’s just so many great characters in that show! Plus there’s not nearly enough reactions to it out there, imo.

    The writers didn’t want to toy with our hearts - Nickelodeon prevented us from getting the full KorrAsami story the show wanted to give us. The crew did their best to give us many moments but the final kiss was not allowed, so we got the pair as close to the kiss as possible before the episode ended.
