I make Grah about once a week all through winter, a massive pot. Each child (so there are no fights) gets their own smoked hock (i use hock, smoked ribs are harder to come by in rural Australia). If there is any left over the next day, i just heat it up again and add carrots and pasta in it...it becomes another hearty, filling meal and this way nothing goes to waste. I also make a similar dish that is not so common, its cabbage and potato with either ribs, smoked hock or even just kransky's ....kids love it, with fresh crusty bread. Also, if we have left over mash potato, the next day i fry up onion and mix it in with the potato. you wouldnt know it was mash from the day before and it is delicious....waste not, want not. It was great seeing how much you enjoyed such simple, rustic, traditional Croatian dishes...thank you.

I don't like walking in it but I do love rain. Great footage! *_grah_* - I'm sure it's a faux pas but I would have stripped all the meat off the bone and added it to the beans immediately. Both individually looked super tasty though. *_boiled beef_* - So glad you selected. Gotta have simple foods regularly I feel. A cheese plate and bread is my favorite. Poached salmon with steamed rice is delicious. Spaghetti with olive oil, garlic and cracked black is perfect. Boiled beef and potatoes? Sounds great to me. *_burek_* - Had Bosnian style (in the U.S.) which was nothing like this version. Love when you introduce me to dishes I've never tried. *_cordon bleu_* - I don't eat a lot of veal (I do when it's expressly indicated that good practices are used) but have had lots of chicken cordon bleu. So many different flavors that work well together, eh? Excellent quick visit to Zagreb. It's not easy to represent an area in just a couple of videos but you guys always seem to knock it out of the park. 👍
Thanks so much Tosh- that’s really kind of you to say. We’re spending about a week in each place at the moment and that’s super fast travel for us 😆 Not a faux pax at all re the grah as another subscriber on here just mentioned that that’s the way they do it in Romania so I’m sure the same goes. Will have to do that next time for sure- it makes sense! The way they crushed the burek was fantastic- we’ve never had it served that way before. Utterly delicious. We are finding so much veal on the menus here- more than we’ve ever seen travelling anywhere else. It’s quite interesting. I’m going to look into what you mentioned about the practices around slaughtering. Thanks for watching this one mate, so glad you enjoyed this very quick series! Cheers, Sheena
It's not surprising that veal is plentiful, Sheena since there are better practices in Europe. The U.K. outlawed calf "crating" a long time ago and the E.U. countries followed in the mid 2000s. It's been a slow adoption in the U.S. (states act independently) but a country ban on crating went into effect a few years ago I believe. The other issue is the diet. Most calves are fed milk only which produces the desired light veal. But this leads to nutrition deficiencies which require antibiotics. But to my original comment, I've seen some menus state that their veal is raised properly thus resulting in a darker meat. Ossobuco is one of my all-time favorites. I seem to have a lot of all-time favorites. 😀
Unfortunately, Sime dining is closed 😔.. I live close and had many lunch there. It was like I eat at my grandma. He promised to open at some other location in Zagreb. I miss this place.😢
I can't help but notice that your timing was impeccable, avoiding the earthquake that happened less than 2 weeks later than this was filmed. I assume that by that time you were already out of Zagreb and Croatia altogether.

Prijatno i svako dobro
1956? Sto Srbi vole nalijepit svoje ime na sve sto valja to nije normalno. Od literature, pisma pa do muzike. Godina "izmisljenja" 1956? Stvarno cete to prodavat? Ali kad nalijepis Ime krivotvoritelja i lokaciju onda valjda zvuci dokumentiranije.

Always amazing how much there is to learn or at least memory to refresh about my old home! The kitchen influenced greatly from the surrounding neighbors. Maybe also vice-versa here and there. When friends ask me aboout Croatian cuisine, I used to tell them that I believe the best is to basically imagine Austrian/Hungarian/ Italian/ Turkish/ Greek food available at all times and all places throughout Croatia. Just given different names and combinations. But I am the simple type of guy who believes that Italian Tagiatelle is basically the same food as Tibetan Momo and am not able to distinguish the taste of Spaghetti from Ravioli and Penne. Greetings from Switzerland. You guys are doing awesome!

@@ChasingaPlatesure, at times I do miss the country a lot. But my true home has now been Switzerland way too long, and I love it! Ok, basically Swiss salaries are a powerful argument that enables one to travel a little more than the average earthling. Maybe it's because real estate is so hard to get so that average people simply give up ob it entirely and spend what's left on trips and lifestyle b.s.. Love to pass by or spend some time jumping almost randomly from place to place when in Croatia, then love to leave the country as well. Every single spot on earth must have its up and downsides. Keep enjoying the fruits of the country for me. Looking forward to your next Zagreb vid as well!

We dropped our bags off and the luggage guy recommended that restaurant (Pri Zvoncu) Looked it up on Google maps sure enough it is the same restaurant. Watching this video last night we both said that looks like where we ate. Sure enough it was. It had good food!

the ribs/hock/ even kransky sausages (anything smoked pork) are cooked with the beans and then taken out before the roo is added (roo is what makes the stew thick, its fried oil, flour and Hungarian paprika)...sometimes the pork is shredded and then added back to the pot of stew once its done, or some people just have it on the side....
Lol Sheena the couple behind you while you were eating the burek were priceless. With all your mmmmmms Im not sure they knew what you were doing exactly. Great video as always

That cordon bleu type thing was actually almost the same as what i had in Montenegro, also served with tartar sauce. I really wish i could remember what it was called, Podgorica something or other. it is considered a local dish to podgorica but montenegro is right next door to croatia so it makes sense
It’s a damn tasty dish right?! Wish we’d make it to Montenegro! We were supposed to travel all around the region but the pandemic stopped us in our tracks. Hope we can get back that way soon. Very interesting to see the borek served all crushed up that way. We’ve only had it served by the slice or from an entire pie. Can imagine it having a nice mix of the textures when served this way
It looks like there are definitely influences of Austrian and Swedish food in there but also a little Irish. It is probably just me but I'm reminded of traditional Irish home cooked food. Good honest homely food offers so much more than your fine dining restaurants. It is food of the soul
Influences from all over the show 😍 We totally agree Catherine- it’s homely food like this that you really crave and that satisfies like nothing else! Thanks for watching and commenting, hope you enjoyed this video. Cheers, Sheena

Even though it's currently 10-45 pm in England and I was watching in bed....Thanks Thomas, that ham and cheese thingy looked so good, my oven is now heating up, cheap crappy pizza on the way!
Great video! It's really nice you actually chose to try "everyday" food instead of the fancy dishes people usually go for. I'm glad you liked it! :) Useless fact ;) - those potatoes with onions are made by cooking potatoes and then frying them in a pan on previously well sauted onions. They are called "restani krumpir". It is really hard to tell what is actually real Croatian traditional food since it has been influenced by surrounding cuisines - Austrian & Hungarian (esp in the North), Italian (esp. in coastal areas) and Bosnian (Turkish).
Not useless at all Petra! We tried our hand at recreating that dish as we loved it so much so am going to use your tip when we make it again next time! Thank you 😍 So happy you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching and commenting 😄 Cheers, Sheena

Hi Big Richard, this is such a lovely message to receive 😍 You’ve made our day! Thanks so much for appreciating the work that goes into making our content. And we hope you like what we have coming up on the channel. Cheers, Sheena
I’m Australian born Croatian and you guys are making me hungry and I’ve just had dinner. Quality food you won’t find better no matter where you travel.
Would love to get back to Croatia and see more of the country! We had a great time in Zagreb. Such comforting, hearty food- it was a delicious trip. Thanks for watching and commenting, so glad you enjoyed the video mate. Cheers, Sheena
Bean stew for the win! Truthfully, it all looked amazing, but there’s just something so satisfying about a slow-cooked pot of beans with a bit of smoked bacon. All day, every day. 😋😘
👊 totally agree- super hearty and comforting right?! That smoked pork rib on the side was the icing on the cake! Thanks for watching and commenting on this one Michael 😘 Hope you’re having a lovely week! Cheers, Sheena
My mouth is watering- looks so good.
A delicious day of comfort food that’s for sure! Thanks for watching Frank! Cheers, Sheena
Thomas, I absolutely loved you reactions to food. Going there soon and looking forward to it even more now seeing all this yummy food. Thank you!
Awesome bro! You’re going to eat so well- thanks for watching this one 😄 Cheers, Thomas
Damn that looks so good. Just started learning Croatian language, hope to visit some day
It was such an awesome day of eating! Hope you get to visit one day soon mate. We’d love to get back to see more of the country one day too. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Sheena
Hvala sto ste dosli u nase mjesto
Thanks for watching and commenting mate! It was such a great day of eating. Cheers, Sheena
That Zagrebački odrezak looked like the business. My kind of dish with those rich potatoes.
It was sensational Grace! And oh my goodness those potatoes 🤤🤤🤤 Thanks for watching and commenting mate. Hope you enjoyed this one. Cheers, Sheena
Wow great 🙏🏻🇭🇷 pozdrav iz Zagreba ☺️
Thanks so much for watching this one. Such a great food day! Cheers, Thomas 😀
i'm catching up now on your Croatia series!! cheers!!!
Thanks mate. Loved filming there. Enjoy the videos. Cheers, Thomas 😀
great video Thomas & Sheena, I'm glad you enjoy it all...loooks like you like to eat, you are welcome we have lot of good food in Croatia
Hope we can return soon! Thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena
I happy that your Here and im Also croatian and we Also make our own food
We loved our time filming there. Thanks very much for watching. Cheers, Thomas 😀
That’s such a shame! I hope he does indeed open in a new spot 🤞 We loved the food there. Thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena
I know i am late but much love from 🇭🇷♥️
Thanks so much for watching Rift! Hope you enjoyed this one 😍 Big love! Cheers, Sheena
I can't help but notice that your timing was impeccable, avoiding the earthquake that happened less than 2 weeks later than this was filmed. I assume that by that time you were already out of Zagreb and Croatia altogether.
We had left by then ugowar. We read about it after it happened in the news. Just terrible! Thanks for watching and commenting, hope you enjoyed this episode. We’d love to return to Croatia one day and explore more! Cheers, Sheena
I love my city. Glad you had a nice time and nice Croatian meals as well
We adored it mate! Such a chilled out vibe. Thanks for watching and commenting, hope we can return to see more of your city once it’s safe for us to travel again! Cheers, Sheena
Boiling beef with cooking potatoes goes with red tomato sauce.. tipical Zagreb old lunch

Very nice! Greetings from Zadar! 😊
Thanks so much for watching and commenting mate! So happy you enjoyed the video! Cheers, Sheena
awesome you covered all regional differences of food throughout croatia. i visited zagreb, split and dubrovnik and all are quite different.
Hope we can return one day and visit other regions and cities 😍 Thanks for watching and watching this is karla, hope you enjoyed this video! Cheers, Sheena
the foods you tried are some of the most popular traditional foods, but there is a lot more. if u ever visit croatia or any neighbouring countries, definitely try: ćevapi, pršut, sarma.
There’s so much more! Thanks for watching and commenting, hope you enjoy our videos from around the region! Hope we can return to Croatia one day soon to explore more. Cheers, Sheena 😄
Prijatno i svako dobro
@komentiraš a ne znaš koja je razlika između zagrebačkog i karađorđeve šnicle.
1956? Sto Srbi vole nalijepit svoje ime na sve sto valja to nije normalno. Od literature, pisma pa do muzike. Godina "izmisljenja" 1956? Stvarno cete to prodavat? Ali kad nalijepis Ime krivotvoritelja i lokaciju onda valjda zvuci dokumentiranije.
Very good, jako dobro😋👌
Thanks for watching. Cheers, Thomas 😀

🥰 wow, we’re blown away! Thank you for the hugely generous words Jo. It’s such a joy being able to share these food cultures with you all. Thanks for watching Chef Cath- very hearty and comforting food indeed. Thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate cheers and looking forward to more exciting videos
😆😆😆😆😆
Do you miss Croatia mate? We loved visiting and hope we can get back to see more of the country one day soon. Thanks for watching and commenting, hope you enjoy our other Zagreb video. Cheers, Sheena
Gotta love having a bit more $ in the pocket 😆😍
What a satisfying video! That bean soup sounds wonderful, and the veal 'cordon bleu' looked and sounded just amazing. You're the best!
😍 so happy you liked it MsKestrela! It was such a great day of eating- comfort food for the win! Thomas is pretty much doing a Balkan cordon bleu tour- he’s eating it in every city we visit 😂 Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Sheena

@@ChasingaPlate if you return don't just go to Zagreb... try to go in "Slavonia" "Dalmatia" or in "Hrvatsko Zagorje"
Loved loved Zagreb Funny story we had a flat tires (wheels) on our luggage. We found a Samsonite luggage store and repair. We dropped our bags off and the luggage guy recommended that restaurant (Pri Zvoncu) Looked it up on Google maps sure enough it is the same restaurant. Watching this video last night we both said that looks like where we ate. Sure enough it was. It had good food!
🙌🙌🙌 it was such a cosy restaurant wasn’t it Linda? The food was delicious. Hope this video brought back good memories of your time in Zagreb. We loved the city too! Thanks for watching. Cheers, Sheena
That smoked rib immediately caught my attention - can imagine how well it would go with that bean soup
It added so much depth 🤤 Such a great meal. Thanks for watching and commenting guys, hope you enjoyed this one. Cheers, Sheena
the ribs/hock/ even kransky sausages (anything smoked pork) are cooked with the beans and then taken out before the roo is added (roo is what makes the stew thick, its fried oil, flour and Hungarian paprika)...sometimes the pork is shredded and then added back to the pot of stew once its done, or some people just have it on the side....
Lol Sheena the couple behind you while you were eating the burek were priceless. With all your mmmmmms Im not sure they knew what you were doing exactly. Great video as always
🤣🤣🤣 it’s such a change filming in countries where there are less people and the restaurants and shops are quieter- we must get so many strange looks 😝 Thanks for watching this one Elaine- so glad you enjoyed it! Cheers, Sheena
Ovo kuhano meso ,vidi se da je lijepo prorašteno i ovako preko kamere vidi se da je jako ukusno !
You gotta drink yogurt with burek for the best experience tho, XD Thanks for the visit!
Burek is definitely comfort food...I prefer to get the one that is not chopped up like the one you had....instead they come out in circle and just get cut in triangles like pizza and you can eat it like a sandwich....
Oooo yea, so you can grip it and just chomp into it! It’s such a delicious food. Thanks for watching Silvia! Cheers, Sheena
wowwwwww.... croatia foods now !!! what a greats foods... LOVE SOOOOO MUCH... thanks guys !!!

"Kod Šime", you were even in my neighbourhood. Funny to think about it. Anyway, glad you enjoyed it. Good choices of places to eat at. Wondering how you came about them.
😍😍😍😍 it was a great spot! We love eating at local spots and exploring suburbs away from the tourist crowds wherever we travel so we do a load of research before we decide where to film and what places to include 😄 Thanks for watching and commenting, hope you enjoyed the video! Cheers, Sheena

As Zagreb born&raised i can't believe that foreigners enjoy so much in this simple meals:) And this restaurant at Kvatrić isn't even so good, there are so much better places in Zagreb with traditional food.
We'll have to return and explore more of the food scene. We loved these spots though. For us simple is best! Thanks for watching and commenting, hope you enjoyed the video. Cheers, Sheena
Wow! Another one where I could just dive right in the screen an eat! Love it all! Especially the potatoes!
Omg 5cats 2kids, those potatoes were out of this world! I need to recreate them at home- they were so intensely flavoursome 🤤 Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Sheena
That cordon bleu type thing was actually almost the same as what i had in Montenegro, also served with tartar sauce. I really wish i could remember what it was called, Podgorica something or other. it is considered a local dish to podgorica but montenegro is right next door to croatia so it makes sense
podgoricki popeci, that is what it was called. damn good, too
It’s a damn tasty dish right?! Wish we’d make it to Montenegro! We were supposed to travel all around the region but the pandemic stopped us in our tracks. Hope we can get back that way soon. Thanks for watching Ben! Hope the video brought back happy memories of your travels in that area! Cheers, Sheena
The sounds you make made me think i was on some other site
😂 gotta eat with gusto! Thanks for watching. Cheers, Sheena
Very interesting to see the borek served all crushed up that way. We’ve only had it served by the slice or from an entire pie. Can imagine it having a nice mix of the textures when served this way
First time for us too! It was neat served that way actually- loved it from an aesthetic point of view- it looked so beautiful 😍

It was such a hearty delicious day of eating! Thanks for watching and commenting, hope you enjoy the rest of our Zagreb videos. Cheers, Sheena
Thank you! I'm Croatian! I know

Our audience is global so it’s neat to get to share Croatian cuisine with them 😄
You guys always find the best stuff. Nice stew there. Smoky-flavored stews make the best stews. Pastry with salty cheese (bureka-style) is such a treat.
😄 thank you Bernard! We totally agree- that stew packed a real punch. So meaty and flavoursome. Thanks for watching and commenting on this video, hope you enjoyed it. Cheers, Sheena
The burem kinda looks like a kugel or our german lazy man cheese buttons, that smoky bean soup an pounded veal.yum .makes my mouth water...love potatoes...
Potato anything I’m a fan of Joan. The ones cooked with the onions in that last meal were amazing- couldn’t get over the flavour! Thanks for watching and commenting on this one. Cheers, Sheena

Even though it's currently 10-45 pm in England and I was watching in bed....Thanks Thomas, that ham and cheese thingy looked so good, my oven is now heating up, cheap crappy pizza on the way!
😂😆👊 good work selina wilson. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Thomas
Haha
Great video! It's really nice you actually chose to try "everyday" food instead of the fancy dishes people usually go for. I'm glad you liked it! :)
Useless fact ;) - those potatoes with onions are made by cooking potatoes and then frying them in a pan on previously well sauted onions.

In Croatia we say pasulj/grah/fažol for beans
Thanks heaps mate. Cheers, Thomas 😀
No, we dont say pasulj.
Kakav pasulj..
Great, you actually visited the restaurants ordinary people go to. Only one remark, in Zvonce you should have had the rumpsteak. And you have missed the Amfora, on the market just above the place you had the burek - simple sea food. Nice.
Mmm rump steak 🤤 we’ll have to order that next time! Ahhh I believe we filmed at Amfora in our other Zagreb video. Hope you enjoy that one too. Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Sheena
