I'm thinking the smaller of the two inlays looks better size wise. I've seen some ugly, ugly fretboard where on a lot of guitar that come into my shop. That would totally eat up decals. There is the scribing and inking style that would give a more 3D effect. That combined with some different color pearl might just make it work. Easy for me to say, it's not hours out of MY life.

Thanks! Dane. In talking with Mr. X. I’m going to be doing the 2 dimensional inlay. What I didn’t know before is that Mr X already has a guitar with the 2D inlay of the same design and it’s what he wants.

can't you champfer the edges to give it a 3d look , and than fill over it in with clear resin so you ll look into the resin to see the 3d inlay ?
