  • As we approach the series finale, only two episodes away, does the show get in track with a solid goal and set up for an engaging conclusion?

You didn't miss anything. This episode was pure spectacle but reached Star Trek: Discovery levels of plot holes, bad writing, and contrivances.

In A New Hope, Ben Kenobi tells Luke that “Only Imperial Stormtroopers are so precise” when investigating the attack on the Sandcrawler and that’s not long after the blockade runner was overwhelmed. Yet in the last few episodes of the Mandalorian, stormtroopers are clueless cannon fodder.

This episode was based on total convienence, with a minor side of failed comedy. If they are going to continue with this zero blood policy, then they have to stop stabbing people with blades and pikes (end of gaffi stick) and crushing heads. Immersion is an easy thing to break. Boba was able to easily take out the troopers since they were not actually fighting him, just running in his general direction. Why does the second troop ship not have heavy weapons, or land on both sides of the hill? The mortar is forgotten after the eweb is destroyed, and they are still not showing any scorch marks after laser blasts. So while the CGI and sound seem to have been fixed, they still have a long way to go before this show is good. Hopefully they saved everything for the last two episodes, but after last season I have my doubts. It still ranks a 6 / 10 for me, which is in line with the rest of the episodes this season.

It's possible the ancient Jedi didn't build such grandiose structures like the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.

To me it makes no sense that the Razor Crest is so close to them at the battle given the distance Mando had to cover with the jetpack earlier to get from the ship to the temple. It didn't look at all as a few steps.
Also I think Mando felt he owed something to the lady sniper because he felt responsible for her near death experience even though he was just doing his bounty hunter job.

I will disagree with you on the stormtroopers. These stormtroopers displayed a strong understanding of small unit tactics and combined arms assault. The leader gave clear and logical instructions to his men. Suppression fire was used to good effect at times. Someone with military experience was involved in making this scene.
The real problem is that stormtroopers have been a joke for so long it is hard to see them as anything other than moving targets for our heroes to shoot at. At the end of season one you have two stormtroopers that fail to hit a can that are s 3 meters (10 feet) from them. I know that scene was a joke; but you can’t go from that to having us believe stormtroopers are a competent military force six episodes later. Choose one and stick with it.

Like a stone slab on a planet of stone slabs! lol Would have been nice if they showed us a quick scene of him scanning for the spot. Ya, and the whole backpack thing was kind of contrived, B- score :P

Another great review SD! I've been on a 1966 Batman kick for the last week. (BTW, Julie Newmar IS the best Catwoman ever, deal with it). While listening to your review, I thought about the Villians' goons in this intentionally campy 1960s TV series. Although they would ultimately be bested by Batman and Robin, the goons weren't never as ineffective and bumbling as the stormtroopers in the Mandalorian.

Why? Because the script said so. And apparently some Imperial Storm Troopers are graduates of the Prometheus School of Running Away From Things.

Yeah, i couldn't get over the Jetpack either.
And it wouldn't even had hurt the flow of the episode, look at the distance, visually between the combat zone and the temple ruins where Grogu was, there is no way Mando would have made that trip by foot in such a short time, with Jetpack it would have made sense exactly the way they showed it, they could have recycled the exact same shot of Mando using the Jetpack, just put Mando without Grogu on the screen, then reverse the shot when he flies back, that can't be expensive or time consuming and still messages he is flying.
Once the Dark Troopers land you got 2 choices,
    a) Jetpack is out of fuel because Mando was flying so much (idk if there is a canon power source for these things, i would simply assume some kind of regular fuel),
    b) Mando flies after the Dark Troopers, 1 or 2 of them turn around to delay him (this can be as short as a 10 second mid air battle sequence where you see them shoot lasers and rockets from a distance), we get another short action scene that actually shows the Dark Troopers in combat, even just a little tease of what they can do would have been fine, but the way they did the Dark Troopers in this episode was just a total cock tease, i thought shit would be going down now, we got Mando and Boba Fett in his Armor and Dark Troopers are coming in, now we are looking at a actual BATTLE for these 2 guys, fighting back to back against this new unknown threat.... NAAAAH, lets just grab Grogu and bugger off.
Have you noticed how the concept art in the end credits shows the Dark Troopers with Chainguns and how they didn't even have weapons when they landed, did they know they wouldn't need to fight so we skipped animating a chaingun for this episode?
I'm really happy with what we got,
but i'm equally angry at what we didn't get,
    - at no point did Mando and Boba fight side by side (we save that for later, i guess).
    - Mando was out of the action for most of the episode (which is the second time in a row now, last episode he played 2nd fiddle to Ashoka, maybe let "The Mandalorian" actually kick some ass in his own Show?). Heck he even took a Nap this time.
    - the Dark Troopers did not fight, they were just there to look cool (we save that for later, i guess).
    - we did not get to know who Grogu talked to
    - Jedi did not show up (it was a remote possibility, it is why they went there after all)
    - i would have loved to see a mid air battle, Mando with his Jetpack taking on the Dark Troopers in a last ditch effort, ultimately failing and falling to the ground...
    Another thing i noticed...
    - Bounty Hunters guild is somehow tracking Grogu
    - Empire is tracking the Razer Crest
    - Boba Fett is tracking... his Armor, somehow.
The Razer Crest must have been glowing like a christmas tree on EM scanners. You would think a Bounty Hunter would know how to make sure that his Ship and everything aboard is 100% stealth.
Either way, ship got blown up, nobody is tracking it anymore now. Boba got his Armor back and Grogu... eh' i guess the Bounty Hunters Guild stopped hunting him after Season 1 anyway, i didn't see any of these weird trackers in Season 2.
PS: did anybody else scream "THEY FLY NOW" when the Dark Troopers first showed up?
For the "incompetence" of the Storm Troopers i have a simple in-universe explanation, have you seen how new and SHINY their armors were? These guys are completely inexperienced, they had basic training, that is it.
There is a Clone Wars episode where i think the 501st make fun of the new arrivals as "Shinies" because their Armors are brand new and those clones are fresh out of the factory while their own Armors are battle worn and scratched up (and they probably have scars under it), they are the experienced Veterans and you can tell just by looking at them.
Granted, these aren't Clones, but who do you think these guys ever fought? Some Rebel Scum at most... they probably just have been dicking around intimidating civilians.
The Storm Troopers in Season 1, with the dirty (sand all over it) armors, those would be the guys i'd be careful about, they looked like they've seen some shit.

Most of this shows episodes seem like they told the director make sure you do these 3 things, and then I don’t care what you do with the rest. Only time and future episodes will tell us if they had a plan, or they just have to deal with whatever “adventure” the director chooses. I like The Mandalorian and I like your reviews they don’t ruin my enjoyment by focusing on negativity while being fair and accurate.

Judging by this guy no wonder Mandalorians were destroyed. What else could have happened when they chose idiot children to raise? Also, battle scenes were inspired by famed Soviet attacks from WW2. Who needs tactics if you have numbers, right?
I am trying to like this series but it is really hard...

Never liked the Razor Crest. So to me it was a good episode.
It had to many dead people that aren't dead, for my taste. The polularity of a character now decides who comes back. Maul, Palpatine, Boba Fett, Fennec. Pretty sure in a coupe of years Han and Luke, Obi-Wan and Vader, Yoda and Jabba The Hutt will be back, if this doesn't stop.
Star Wars writers are afraid of consequnces, which makes everything boring, there are no stakes at all. This is a problem, and will become worse over time.
