@@RondaLaxton-ht7xf Kyoto is very hilly and there are extremely steep trails. Near the attractions/temples it’s primarily a walking town, versus a commuter traveler town. But since I don’t want to make assumptions about your mom’s abilities or tolerance for steep hills, here’s what I would recommend… On Google Maps, there’s a feature where you can do 360° immersive views of a location, called Street View. If you google, “Google Maps 360 View”, you’ll see what I mean. That way you can search Kyoto and view the terrains of some of the areas. As a starting point you can put in Higashiyama, which is one of the main parts of Kyoto. Another option that I definitely recommend is to search for a Kyoto walking tour on RUclips. There are excellent walking tour videos of most of the cities in Japan and they should give you a great sense of what your mom might be able to handle during your trip. Let me know if either of these suggestions are helpful.

Great question, @goodliving. And I'm glad the video was helpful! Cash is pretty much king in Kyoto, unlike other major cities like Tokyo and Osaka. Temples only accept cash, so if you're looking to buy tickets, it's best to buy them online ahead of time if you don't plan on carrying too much cash. Also, some places accept credit cards, but they tend to be Japanese credit cards. The good thing is that 7-11 ATMs are pretty easy to find and major shops and restaurants do accept credit cards. But to play it safe, try to bring along some cash for your Kyoto trip. Hope this helps!
Hi Denise, I would recommend getting there by 6 or 7am to avoid the crowds as much as possible. If you’re a photography fan, you’ll enjoy getting some photos of the surroundings at sunrise-ish time. The bus tours usually start getting in at around 8:00/8:30 and they’re usually super packed, so I’m glad you’re planning to get there early!

Does the Suica card expires? I was in Japan this past April and will traveling there in October. Will I be able to add money to the Suica card I purchased in April?
Hi @EatTravelWithMe. The normal Suica card does not expire, but you have to use it at least once within a 10 year timeframe for it to stay active. If you have a card from April you will be able to use it when you're there in October. However, if you purchased a Welcome Suica card (the visitor version of the card), it is only valid for 28 days after the first use. So in that case, you won't be able to use it when you return. It all just depends on which type of card you have. Hope that helps!

I’m absolutely devastated. Tourists are banned from the Gion district from April ‘24.
I know!! It’s so disappointing. But is it from the entire district, or just the side streets near the tea houses and geisha/maiko quarters?
Im pretty certain it’s just the alley streets that have geisha houses.
There should have been increased police presence and the Geisha’s as well as the Miako’s should have hired bodyguards to protect them.
I’m sad to hear that but if it’s a small part it should be ok. I think it’s good for their safety and privacy though.

You can’t actually fly from Tokyo to Kyoto, there is no airport in Kyoto so you would have to fly to Osaka KIX airport
