I guess I, the runner myself, should come in and clarify *exactly* what went on here with the battery. First, some background info: This was my first time playing at any live event, and my streams usually had about 3 to 10 viewers, my highlights never really got more than 50 views. To go from that straight to a GDQ, with probably 300 people sitting right behind you and 100 thousand watching the stream, is just crazy. That of course comes with a shit ton of anxiety and stress, so much so that my whole body was noticeably shaking for the first half of the run (I don't know if you can tell in the video). I was practicing pretty much the entire day before this, the run was at about 10:30PM, which let my battery run down to about half. Now you would think that half a charge is good enough to play for 30 minutes, but of course we all overestimate the battery life of the original 3DS. I did a stream after the event where I went from full charge to dead in 2 hours and 15 minutes-- and this was with wireless communications off. During the run they were on because with so much anxiety your common sense is gone and you only think of what is absolutely necessary. So I brought down the DS without a charger and didn't turn off wireless communications. I obviously way overestimated the battery life of this thing. Now, during the run, it hit red at about 17 minutes in. I saw it, but knew I was on good pace and could probably last 10 more minutes. (A good run is about 28 minutes). When I entered 6-Tower it started flashing. I saw it, but was too nervous and focused on the run to speak up and ask for a charger. I knew that flashing red usually means 7-10 more minutes, which was more than enough to finish the run. But since I wasn't 100% sure it would last, I saved. Much to my surprise, it didn't last. At that point I was practically dying, I had no idea what to say or do. But I held it in as much as I could because that's what I do best, and once the amazing tech guys got me set back up with a charger super quickly, I was straight back into the run. I still managed to play really well from there, too. Long story short, no matter how anxious you are, a charger should be your second priority, only next to the console itself. PS: I actually did the math on how much time the battery death lost, and the time would've been 28:38 without it. Subtract the 2 intentional fireworks from that (15 seconds each) and you get 28:08, which at the time would've been 3rd place, and beats my PB by 7 seconds. The world record is 27:30. Amazing run.
Still a great run, nothing but love and support from me. You just need to ignore anyone who would give you shit over this. PS you did awesome even though you were nervous
Gotta say, this was an awesome run. The runner was fun, explained what needed explaining, and was super entertaining to watch. The announcer might actually be my favourite one yet. Just so charming, and genuinely seemed to be enjoying himself. The donations were also great here. People just having fun while donating money for the cause. I didn't go into this one expecting much (I'm not super familiar with Mario stuff), but this is easily on my favourite's list. Instead of me getting slightly miffed at the battery dying, I found it hilarious. Got to see some personality shine from all the people participating for a bit, which was super rad.
Thanks so much guys (especially EeveeSpirit) for showing me some cheats to get to world mushroom and world flower, I have been trying to get to it for years, YEARS and I couldn't find it. Again, thanks and keep up the great work.
TeamUp01 Killing/Saving the Animals is something from Super Metroid. It's a choice you make near the end of the game (no spoilers) and apparently it's a furious battle of donations between whether GDQ Super Metroid runners let the animals die or not in a run. Obviously highest donation for either side by the time they come to make the choice wins and decides what the runner does.
It refers to the Super Metroid runs/races held at GDQ's. At the end of the game's escape sequence there is an optional room where you enter and free some animals, and if you do, they appear during the game's ending cut scene escaping in a separate ship; if this is not done presumably they die on Zebes when the bomb goes off. In a speed run it is faster to skip that room to save time/frames. Since the preference of any speedrunner is to go as fast as possible, skipping that room is obviously preferrable, but the runners will save them if the donation incentive is met to save them and vice versa.
Sure! (Assuming that you haven't found out elsewhere) One of the most popular events in Games Done Quick is a Super Metroid run of some kind. One of the incentives is a bidding contest between "Saving the animals" or "letting them die" when the planet blows up at the end of the game. Saving the animals cost time and an actual world record run was ruined because the runner had to save the animals as it is like 30 seconds slower. But people hate watching them die so it becomes one of the best bidding wars for GDQ to get a lot of money.

EeveeSpirit Aww. Don't sweat it!
EeveeSpirit You were still awesome to watch.
Props to Eevee bro, as well.
Never thought of the pressure that is to speedrun to a huge public like that. Still, you did a good job!

Oh it's all right. Actually it was hilarious and I love bed the run. Thanks!
runner stayed positive... unlike DS battery. Clever donation at the end lol

Really love this run and the runners commentary and for keeping it cool when the battery ran out. I didn't mind, didn't make the run any less awesome!

But that's cheap. You either try to look for it yourself or you watch what other people do so you know exactly what to do.
7:30 run start
Would've been 28:35 or around that without the 3DS running out of battery, so yea, that was a really good time.
about 28:10 actually
🎶 Fireworks killed the battery star 🎶
"Now here's a really hard boss-"
Beats boss in 6 seconds
Huh.......oooookay
29:39 I swear that sounds like a song from Death Note.
Is it that time of the year? OH YOU BET IT IS!
Is there any other speedrun with a USA Chant?

24:12 What'd that guy say?
"Thank you", I think. He said it really weird
Great game..
Has there been a run for the new super Mario 3ds yet?
Chad Stuetzel This is the new one
this IS for the 3ds
Adam Conover donated during this segment? As in the guy that ruins everything?
Good Job
Did you get a headache from looking down for a while?
...I think 6-1 would've also been a fireworks-able level.
Fireworks hype indeed
what is this about killing or saving the animals

DrewDoesThings thanks for the answer
Just a little silly question... what is that "Save the animals/kill the animals" thingy about?
it has to do with super metroid there's a part where you can save animals which slows the run down or you can let them die

Hot Damm, I feel like I suck now. But thanks for letting me know how to get to the cannons :)
why jump so high on the flag? doesn't a lower jump use less time to end the level?
My ds sucks and turns itself off sometimes so I got used to a game turning black suddenly.
yay, more fireworks^^
How is this game four years old?!? Geez time flies
7 now
@@vince4918 9 going 10
@@vince4918 in a few months it's gonna be 10 years.

Sean Ross sarcasm sorta.
It's a Twitch emote used inchat to indicate sarcasm or hilarity ^^
aww look the name is eevee spirit :)
lovely
eevee got a good time and beat the run even though the 3ds tried to stop the run
Can someone please tell me what's the deal with animals and GDQ? There is an inside joke that I am not getting.

Insert FFVII: Advent Children Reno reaction to the helicopter control stick gif here.
did fireworks just become a meme?
I can only speed run the first level...
why must there be so many coins in this game?
A secondary goal of the game is to collect 1 million coins.
because Nintendo wants you to forget about wario
anyone else notice some screen flicker?
