  • Did you know that 22% of Americans are undermethylated and another 8% are overmethylated? The emerging science of epigenetics is providing insights into the impact of methylation imbalances on neurotransmission at serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and NMDA receptors, and also provides a roadmap for effective nutrient therapies. William J. Walsh, PhD, presents The Role of Methylation and Epigenetics in Brain Disorders.

    Our environmental conditions and food supply are becoming increasingly toxic. This information is so important right now.
    Our ability to detoxify this bombardment of toxins, depends on good methylation. Amalgam toxicity, Lyme ,EBV, thyroid and adrenal issues only add to this mess. Everyone needs to hear this! Thank you.

    For anyone that is actively researching their own depression and mental health issues, I started a subreddit for this exact reason. I'm a huge fan of Walsh and many of his findings are on my sub also. If you are actively researching, feel free to check it out. Go to reddit and check out r/researchingdepression. Thanks.

    This was an amazing presentation and by far the best I've ever seen regarding the subject of methylation and testing. And to think it has been more than four years since it was first uploaded; that tells me the Walsh Institute was years ahead of the game even back then--- and has been attempting to train providers in an effort to help as many people as possible for quite some time now. Thank you 🙏 for your work and I pray your efforts will continue to bless others with many more providers taking your work to-heart (despite the current irresponsible trends in the "modern medical model"--- which helps precious few anymore, save for the broken but greedy system itself.

    People who have taken the drug accutane are under also under methylated. This is because accutane induces a hypersensitive GNMT enzyme which converts your glycine and SAMe into sarcosine and SAH too quickly. You become deficient then in glycine and SAM and therefore can't methylate properly. It's well known that accutane causes depression and mental problems and this likely has a lot to do with it.

    This is a great talk, but it leaves me asking, what about other reasons for symptoms? For example, vaccines given to young children can cause autism. That link is followed in the movie "Vaxxed." A 2nd example - Lyme disease can cause autism in children born with it or if exposed early on to the bacteria. LIA, ie Lyme-Induced Autism, is an organization dealing with that. I guess this is called a differential diagnosis comment.

Thats bad science, and a major annoyance for people that are looking into this, but need to see the original work done (for university study). Nor has this Fellow even once mentioned the critical importance of B12 in nerve function and repair. His understanding of the methyl cycle is highly limited! The idea of withholding the active form of folate from those who have mthfr snps (especially those with homozygous snps plus other important snps in the methyl cycle is extremely questionable.

      What is your problem?
      I suggest you go to Dr. Walsh to straighten out your anger issues. Perhaps you have a pyrole disorder. Your negative comments are unwelcome here
      because they are angry ranting that don’t always make sense given the context. Do you even have a clue that for Dr. Walsh to
      go into depth on these issues you bring up such as the various snps, the use of
      B12 and everything else that goes into the methylation cycle could make a video
      that’s 20 hours long? Who’s going to
      watch it? It might require him to teach
      a 5 hour course in college chemistry. Are
      you that ignorant that you watch one
      solitary 2 hour 16 minute video and really believe that this is the sum total
      of a person’s knowledge on a topic? I’m
      from Illinois. I grew up from his
      clinic. I’ve heard Dr. Walsh talk
      numerous times in Illinois and in California.
      He could talk you under the table on this subject or anything else
      dealing with the nutritional treatment of mental health. I think you fit the category of being “so far
      behind she thought she was first.” I
      know numerous people who have brought their children to his clinic and he has
      taken these little zombie robots and changed them into normal functioning
      children. It’s amazing to watch mothers
      sobbing with relief to know their child was rescued from the ravages of
      autism. He saved my life. You throw around a lot of words to impress
      that you know something, just enough to put your foot in your mouth. I don’t believe you’ve even looked at his
      book, or anything else he’s ever done. You’re not even listening to the video when
      you write, “I am not at all convinced that all so called depressed
      undermethylators are intolerant of folates.”
      He NEVER said that ALL depressed undermethylators are intolerant of
      folates. He even made a point of saying
      that folates, especially methylfolate help most people. How did you miss that? He also stated that he was ONLY referring to
      undermethylators with depression caused by low serotonin or dopamine. Depression can be caused by a lot of things. High levels of copper, pyrrole disorders and
      a toxic metal overload can all cause depression. Even overmethylation can cause depression,
      but that’s a separate issue. Maybe if
      you’re not impressed it’s because you’re too ignorant to be impressed.

    • @armenvardanyan5494
      @armenvardanyan5494 7 лет назад

      It seems that Walsh, in ADDITION to looking at Metylation cycle, considers Epigenetics and gene expression, and if his statements, about folates increasing gene expression of SERT and DAT are true, then yes, it is better to avoid them.

    • @armenvardanyan5494
      @armenvardanyan5494 7 лет назад

      You see, MTHFR and Methyl-Folate are only a part of the cycle and it is not clear what percent of SAMe is made using folate.
      There are other pathways of making SAM-e such as directly from Homocysteine, using TMG and being undermethylated one can use this pathways to increase SAMe

  • @lindanedderman-eaton3826
    @lindanedderman-eaton3826 9 лет назад

    and I am not at all convinced that all so called depressed undermethylators are intolerant of folates. Not once did he mention that that may be because they might have a COMT snp or an MAO snp and those snps might need to be supported before even attempting to give methylfolate. Nor has this fellow mentioned the need to have enough B12 before attempting to give methyl folate either due to the fact that not doing so will create a methyl trap.
    The only time he mentioned such snps was in the context of those with methyltranferase snps are considered over methylators....Then he moved on to the transporter receptor issue.
    I am not impressed at this point.

    • @staceyroberts8981
      @staceyroberts8981 8 лет назад +5

      +Linda Nedderman-Eaton I think it is important to understand that every person is individual and he is presenting the information he has compiled with over 30,000 case studies looking at mental health primarily. So each issue can manifest with its own underlying pathology not just from one diagnosis to another but within a diagnosis as well. He is talking about what he has seen work for a vast number of people in his clinic but just like if the proper form of folate doesn't work for someone with these issues, then as you said B12 may be the issue, it is a puzzle for each person. He is also within the medical community that in order to be published needs to be allowed to do double blind placebo controlled studies to be considered in the medical field as the gold standard. Therefore for him to narrow things down to one nutrient is one of the only ways he will get approval for those types of studies. Not saying it is right, just saying that is what the reality is if he wants funding to get published. If what he is doing is bringing awareness to the medical community of the value of nutrient therapy in conjunction with or instead of medication, that is the first step to making massive change in the industry and helping more people. So until you have worked with people with these issues over and over for many years, it is easy to be critical. What you learn from someone or from a textbook is often very different when you are working with individuals. I respect all those who are researching and shedding light on this very complicated process in our body. I just try to keep in mind that he is reporting his extensive clinical evidence which reflects his experience with individuals and will help many people directly through treatment or indirectly through exposure to the concept.

    • @armenvardanyan5494
      @armenvardanyan5494 7 лет назад +7

      You are basing your arguments on Lynch statements, and Walsh is looking from a somewhat different angle.
      What if Lynch statements are unsignificant in nature?
      What bothers me is Lynch HIGHly commercializes his work and charges so much for tests, supplements, whereas Walsh Institute is non-profit
      Also Walsh has been in this for such a long time, and his background in hard science gives me more confidence that he is taking into consideration the system as a whole and try to understand what is more relevant.

    • @staceyroberts8981
      @staceyroberts8981 7 лет назад +1

      I agree that Lynch has commercialized his process to be available for the masses but that doesn't necessarily make him anything but an effective online business person and there is nothing wrong with charging for your business. I don't agree with everything he says but helping people with reputable information in a business is important. Simply bringing awareness to this complicated topic is an awesome thing that both Walsh and Lynch are doing. Walsh is sticking primarily with the medical community. You have to be a medical doctor to attend Walsh's seminars which as a licensed health professional I believe really limits his scope and reach even within the medical community but it also allows him to somewhat keep in check how his information is being used.He charges high fees for his seminars and he should. But don't be fooled by any businesses non profit status. A non profit's goal is still to make money. Heck, the NFL is a non profit organization! So though the perception is that nonprofits are somewhat more reputable and they aren't wanting to make money like a company that does not have a nonprofit status is just a perception and not a reality. If they don't make money they will cease to exist. But if nonprofits are doing good work and putting what they make into research to benefit others (unlike some of the major nonprofits out there who are putting huge salaries in their CEO's pockets while putting a pittance towards research or helping others) then that is a great thing. Both of these men are shedding light on a very important issue and looking at them in different populations so that will always create differing results. And the very nature of epigenetics is that we as individuals or as groups will react differently to nutrients, the environment, medications etc. So there isn't likely going to be agreement across the board and blanket statements are going to be less true as more and more info comes up. Its our job to discern what makes sense to us for our own health, our family and our patients if a heath professional.

    • @clubadv
      @clubadv 6 лет назад

      Stacey Roberts what armen is trying to detail is the conflating of the issue on mthfr for personal gain. Indeed comertializing doesnt automatically make for such conflation, but he is mostly a lone wolf in this science with many just regurgitating his claims, and that is what is really the evidence for Dr. Lynches motivated bias.
      Only a very small fraction of people who have the mthfr gene mutation also have the many other gene mutations that make methylation a problem that requires interventions like taking methylfolate. Lynch's tests are very insufficient.

  • @lindanedderman-eaton3826
    @lindanedderman-eaton3826 9 лет назад +3

    I am sorry, but this guy need to take some courses on methylation from Dr. Ben Lynch! He is making conclusions that normal parts of the methyl cycle are somehow harmful or aberrant. 5-mthf is suppose to lose its methyl group in the process of donating it to homocysteine (not histamine as he mistakenly states) to be turned back into thf as thf is used to create other forms of folate that are necessary in other pathways. This is not harmful or aberrant or a problem. And this is just one example of problems I am having with this guy's understanding of methylation issues. Everything is a balance in the body.

      +Anonymous Nobody Nope! I repeat: +Anonymous Nobody Show me the the evidence! Not found anywhere except unsupported statements by Dr. Walsh. Dr. Ben Lynch has this to say about Dr. Walsh's viewson his blog about histamine (Dr. Lynch's MTHFR site is the place to go for evidence-based information about the MTHFR defect and other methylation issues "It’s not that simple.There are many other things at play besides just histamine. Also need to evaluate mitochondria, other snps, other cofactors, underlying infections, tolerance to sulfur.The term ‘undermethylator’ and ‘overmethylator’ to me are oversimplifications. I wish it was that easy - but it is isn’t - not in my experience.What is his reasoning?"When researching Dr. Walsh's reasoning on this, I (as well as other bloggers on Dr. Lynch's site could find no evidence for it. I also have come up with links that do discuss high folic acid levels (which occur often due to the inability to covert synthetic folic acid to the active form of folate, which is the form that can cross the blood brain barrier and allow the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin. If you are not making serotonin in the first place of course you are going to be low in it.In addition, other SNPS come into play here: COMT, MAT, CBS and more.jeffreydachmd.com/folate-autism-jeffrey-dach/ is just one such link.
