  • In this episode of RIO's "How To Fly Fish" series, Wayne Peterson talks about fly fishing for trout in drought conditions.
Trout are healthiest in cooler water conditions when the water temperatures are in the mid 50's (deg F). As water warms up, the saturated oxygen content decreases, making it harder for fish to recover from the exertions from being caught. Once the water get to the high 60's/low 70's it is best to not fish for them at all, and let them well alone.
In this film Wayne discusses the options for fly fishing in the middle of summer when water temperatures are high, and how, with a little planning, you can still venture out and enjoy the wonderful sport of fly fishing - even in the heat.
RIO's "How To Fly Fish" videos are a series of short films that explain all you need to know to learn a particular way to fish or cast. Where applicable, each film talks through the gear that you need, shows how to rig the gear, how to read the water, and how to fish that particular technique. These educational films are packed with information and top tips designed to improve the knowledge and skill level of all fly fishers. Each one is bought to you by a RIO employee or a RIO brand ambassador.

excellent clip Rio, so much great info to only be watched once. Wayne, awesome work, definelly one fish can be surprisingly hide way more valuable and rich experience than 10 fish that might only keep us busy and distracted from the real blessing of just being in the water by targeting that only fish the way we want.

Nice vid. I check temps and move upstream or to feeders and check them if the water gets too hot.

Thanks for the video Rio! Wet your hands people! Even if you're rowing a drift boat, and the bend over the side is tough. Something that gets overlooked far too much these days.

You should say this is for catch and release fishermen. If you’re keeping them it doesn’t matter the temperature or how gentle you are.

if you make a long drive and didn't check the water temps.... you could still practice.... snip the entire hook off and count how many takes you can entice. You'll still learn a lot and explore the river.
