Mike Gallegos experience sounds pretty standard for any Federal job. I'm sure its a bit more than normal, but the local post office here is looking for rural mail handlers. Pay starts st 17$ an hour and there's probably a 50 page bs application. It was good to hear this though as I'm looking to become a mariner soon and MSC is one place I'm looking to get hired. We will see what happens in six months.
Greetings. I was a Boiler Technician for 4 years in the USN. After being Honorably discharged, I worked as a Power Plant Operator for more than 30 years (mostly as a Shift Supervisor) and am now recently retired. I'm very bored in retirement and want to return to the workforce. MSC engineering employment appeals to me. Although I'm in good shape and have no serious health concerns. Before I apply for the TWIC card I need to know if age will be a factor during the hiring process. Will age be a hindrance? Thank you
IDK about advice... but I try to share my experiences, knowledge and my perspective. I am always open to share and also post content.... because I think #RUclips is a awesome forum for everyone. What were you pondering?
@@thewanderingmariner first thanks for the other videos about MSC because I was thinking about that path but knowing that they high grooming standards ( I beard and side curls for religious reasons) 😔 So do have any experience and/or possible places to look in regards to other side of merchant marine?? .. Can you start before going to a school? .. how do you and can you get promoted as in from working deck to becoming a mate to ships CAPTAIN?? or is not like the military 🤔 Was is a rotation like🤔 is like the military... year out then time off 🤷♂️ I was in the USMC for 12 years, my MOS WAS 0431. I have applied twice to be a Damage Controlman. Both times not getting selected. Should I keep trying or should I apply for AEL? I spent 10 years in the Navy and have sea time. Not sure if I will do entry level or go to SIU. Any thoughts?
Is the MSC a good entry into the maritime career field? I would be interested in joining to get experience but my fear is that SU would be the only thing offered and I hear it's hard to get out of
My son is 19, has MMC, TWIC & passport, he has applied for entry level. He has some good experience with firearms, would it help to take a class for that before he goes? There are no classes for anything near us job related but if he can something to get ahead 🤔
@thewanderingmariner good to know! I was a Marine, my husband is a 27 yr retired Major. I wish I'd have known about this life before Paris Island got me! He'll do well.
Your video r great, with lots of information. Great work. Have a few questions. IF You HAVE PASSPORT, TWIC, SECURITY CLEARANCES, WORKING FOR MSC AS CONTRACTOR ,DO you still join as training personal? Can you choose like type of admin jobs? Also once you join how long is your contract to stay with them? I heard you can not get out, you have to work for them for 4-5yrs? Thanks
MSC admin jobs are mainly shoreside(look at USA JOBS). For sea going positions, these are all W2 jobs and not contract work. You will need to attend the training for the position you are hired for. You can resign your position any time but need 5 yrs min to gain any retirement benifits. Also note.... if on a ship that is deployed and you decide you want to quit, you will be returned to the states at MSC convience.
Psoriasis itself isn't disqualifying. I have been told it depends on the severity and medications being taken or used. If you already have your MMC, then I would say you should be good. I would call the MSC hotline for more info!
What does waiting for further review mean ? NMC said it’s nothing on my part . I’m talking about the MMC . I also have my medical certificate already. Does that mean I’m go to and just have to wait ?
Hi I want to apply for junior supply officer. I went to maritime college and got my masters but didn’t get my uscg license. I meet the requirements for the job I would like to know how long the process takes to get on boarded and how/where I can re-take all of my safety courses as they have all expired
I am retired from the US government from Homeland security and I’m already collecting my pension, but I am only 52 years old. I have seatime as well as an MMC was was considering going to military sealift command as a change of career. My Aviation career may be over and thought I would go spend a couple years at sea, can I still get hired even though I am“retired federal employee?
@@thewanderingmariner Sir, would you have any insight on a possible email address for MSC human resources where I can get an answer to that question considering I am already collecting a federal pension I don’t know if I would be able to be hired or not. There are several programs I know where I’ve had friends who retired and continued with government service as a rehired annuity, which is a pretty good deal, collecting salary and a pension, but I’m not sure if military sealift command would follow under those guidelines or not.
I worked as 2nd officer on international vessels.. how can i integrate in us maritime jobs .. is it allowed to get us mariner credentials using a permanent resident card
You have to be a US citizen to work for MSC. While lawful permanent residents (green card holders) can work on many U.S.-flagged vessels, including in the international trade sector, the Jones Act may restrict their employment on vessels engaged exclusively in coastwise trade, where citizenship requirements are stricter. In summary, the Jones Act could limit some opportunities in coastwise trade for green card holders, but it doesn't broadly restrict employment in the maritime industry overall. You may still find employment on other U.S.-flagged vessels operating internationally or in different sectors of the maritime industry.
😞Unfortunately, a green card is not sufficient for positions with the Military Sealift Command (MSC). You must be a U.S. citizen to apply. If you're on the path to citizenship, it's definitely worth continuing, as your extensive maritime experience will be highly valuable once you can apply. Keep sailing towards your goal-you're doing great!
There are mafia's, clicks, white privledge, brotherhoods, hook ups, pretty privledge, good ole boy networks with favoritism and discrimination around every corner if looking for it! I always tried to fit in where I could and move on where I didn't.
When I joined the USMC (2011-2015) MEPS lost my fingerprints three times 😂
Every Sailor, Soldier Airmen and Marine... has a story about MEPS! 😄
They still suck. They lost my medical cents.
Engineering on an epf is easy work.

all my documents for MMC are still under process now because I plan to apply to MSC and I have a long experience in running vessel in the Philippines

Thanks for the question. I added to tonight's discussion. There shouldn't be any problems provided the physical goes well.

If you are open to considering a new role.... MSC.... and don't wait for the DC job. If looking for money.... SIU.
Also curious about job assignments. Do you get to choose where you go or what kind of ship you'll be on?
Not much say in assignments. I have other videos on this topic. 🙂 Thanks for watching, and best of luck for your son.
@thewanderingmariner thank you! I'm building him a Playlist, I'll add that one!
Been attached to three Aircraft Carries. Could one expect to receive the same accommodations with living quarters and meals?
Better living quarters with similar food.... minus speed line options.

Don't worry about any classes if going into MSC. They will get him into small arms and pay for it.

Tell him to sign up with sailors union of the Pacific or MFOW
He'll need to get his vpdsd and basic safety training

Hey man, so I have psoriasis. Would that dq me from a job in the maritime field? Can’t find any answers. Not sure if you would even know.

Yup, just sit tight, and they will send it once the review is completed. You can call them after a reasonable time as well. Best wishes

When you go to NEO what happens if you can’t float for 60 seconds?
Honestly don't know. You can do it!
How long you have to be with MSC to be vested/qualify for pension and retirement pay? Thank You!
Thanks for asking. It's covered in tonights video! 🙏

I would say do lots of research and google "MSC now hiring". Best of luck to yah
@@thewanderingmariner thanks, keep up the good work, great video.
How many months out of the year do you work sir.
For MSC, typically 8 to 9 months a year. However, I do a lot of comp time and use all my sick days! :)
Sound like a party
