Oh my goodness! This takes me back. I have to say this is shades of my childhood. These memories take me back to my grandparents living room, where my grandad still had all his records from the 40’s-70’s and would put some music on his old Hifi for an impromptu dance party for us all in the living room ❤ thank you for that reminder. He’s long since passed, but that memory lived on in my soul.

Fantastic reaction. The moment you said, "kick back", I knew y'all were in trouble. This song is anything but "laid back". Kudos to the late, great Eric Gale on lead guitar and overdubbing on rhythm guitar.
This is absolutely representative of the 70s CTI/Kudu label output, largely due to the arrangers (Bob James in this case). Funky and soulful. I have just about everything released on that label and would recommend any one of them. There was a group of top class musicians who all played on each other's albums. Hank Crawford was a contemporary of Grover (listen to Teach Me Tonight) and in fact Grover got his first CTI gig when Hank Crawford couldn't make a recording session and Grover was called in. Trumpeter Freddie Hubbard had some great albums on that label, my favourite being Red Clay (the song and the album). The great Herbie Hancock played on that. Eric Gale was the guitarist you enjoyed so much and yes, Grover played on his albums. They also had vocalists e.g. Esther Phillips with a great version of What a Diff'rence a Day Makes. I could go on and on (oops, I already have) but I'll stop there.
There was a sunken road coming up out of a manmade lake near where I lived. People would go there to night fish, I loved it there. After about 11 pm things got pretty quiet, everyone leaned back waiting for their rod to bend. About 3 am, I hear this wonderful music wafting through cool, echo-y night air. That was the first time I heard GW jr. So Grover became my fishing buddy from there on out.
Another amazing saxophonist was Rhasaan Roland Kirk, he did a lot of funky jazz. He even played two saxes at once... Check out "Freaks for the Festival" by Kirk...

Grover Washington Jr was a legend in the 70's. I was a "college DJ" in the mid to late 70's and I would whip out Mr Magic just to cool things down on the dance floor. It was...magic! If you want more, try George Benson (guitar), Roy Ayres (xylophones), Boney James (sax), Sade (vocals), Quincy Jones (everything), Donald Byrd...I could go on and on.

This is absolutely representative of the 70s CTI/Kudu label output, largely due to the arrangers (Bob James in this case). Funky and soulful. I have just about everything released on that label and would recommend any one of them. There was a group of top class musicians who all played on each other's albums. Hank Crawford was a contemporary of Grover (listen to Teach Me Tonight) and in fact Grover got his first CTI gig when Hank Crawford couldn't make a recording session and Grover was called in. Trumpeter Freddie Hubbard had some great albums on that label, my favourite being Red Clay (the song and the album). The great Herbie Hancock played on that. Eric Gale was the guitarist you enjoyed so much and yes, Grover played on his albums. They also had vocalists e.g. Esther Phillips with a great version of What a Diff'rence a Day Makes. I could go on and on (oops, I already have) but I'll stop there.

There was a sunken road coming up out of a manmade lake near where I lived. People would go there to night fish, I loved it there. After about 11 pm things got pretty quiet, everyone leaned back waiting for their rod to bend. About 3 am, I hear this wonderful music wafting through cool, echo-y night air. That was the first time I heard GW jr. So Grover became my fishing buddy from there on out.

Grover Washington Jr was a legend in the 70's. I was a "college DJ" in the mid to late 70's and I would whip out Mr Magic just to cool things down on the dance floor. It was...magic! If you want more, try George Benson (guitar), Roy Ayres (xylophones), Boney James (sax), Sade (vocals), Quincy Jones (everything), Donald Byrd...I could go on and on.

Grover Washington Jr. lived around the corner from me for a while when I was growing up. My neighbor babysat his son. "The Best is Yet to Come " featuring Patti LaBelle and "Just the Two of Us" featuring the late great Bill Withers are a must. 💛
