Jay & Amber, you'll love his "Right Next Door", "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark", "I Guessed I Showed Her" and many more!!! He did an album with Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland called Showdown! It's awesome. Love this song!! I saw him in the summer of 1988 on pier 86. Robert cites Albert Collins, George Harrison, Eric Clapton and B.B. King as his early influences. edit- Jay, if you want to hear a bluesman shred for 2 1/2 minutes - Son Seals "Hot Sauce". Also Jonny Lang- "Lie To Me" for blues/rock.

Glad you guys are getting into Robert Cray because he's fantastic. Outstanding guitarist and what a singer - probably one of the cleanest, clearest vocalists ever. Others have talked about how killer the Strong Persuader album is (and it is!), but I recommend tracks from Midnight Stroll like "The Forecast Calls for Pain" and "Consequences." You'll especially love the horns joining him on those two tracks.

I'll never forget it....I'm in college, it's 1986-87 and I'm watching the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Carson introduces the previously little-known Mr. Cray and he plays this song and after the song Cray points his finger like a gun and points it at Johnny back at his desk and then blows the imaginary smoke off his extended index finger...I was floored and my life was changed for a a little while. I had the cassette the very next morning...

Thanks so much for checking this song out. I'm one who asked for it. I highly recommend I Shiver be next. Bob gets in the groove like no other. I Shiver shows that, and has horns! There are many great recommendations in these comments. Really all his albums are full of greatness. The Twenty album is a more contemporary sound while still bluesy and beautiful. If not for my Aunt Belle, I would have missed Robert Cray's 'Smoking Gun'. She was from New Orleans and loved good music! I love the song. Thanks, Auntie Belle. Rest on!

Love Robert Cray. I’ve seen him twice. But, there is a blues singer, songwriter, guitarist who is from Compton, Ca. I’ve seen him twice. Once with his band and once just him and his guitars. Very small venue: he was talking to us like we were in his living room. His name is Ken’ Mo. it’s actually his name. His name is Kevin Moore. Keb’ Mo is how his grandma pronounced it. If you check him out, start with “Tell Everybody I Know”. You won’t be disappointed. Hopefully. As always, great job.

I was fortunate...I got to meet Robert and WC Clark at the NAMM festival. I was introduced by my uncle and mentor Bob Welch, who I was there with along with Alan Holdsworth. We went to a club afterwards (I wasn't even old enough to be in) and we did an impromptu jam session at the behest of the owner and the crowd. We did this song, the thrill is gone, some Howling Wolf,ect... Someone had posted the video years back, but the video and their channel is gone. I didn't have the foresight to download it. I have the memory though!! I remember Robert telling me:"Son,you can really play!" One never forgets a compliment like that

My good buddy Dave Olsen (RIP Dave-o) was keepin' the beat on drums for The Robert Cray Band. Dave was so humble that it wasn't until I was at his house and saw his two Grammys on a shelf that he finally 'fessed up and told me about his years touring with the band. Wild and crazy times back in the day.

I saw Robert Cray open for Huey Lewis and The News in the early 80's (83 or 84) . That was such an amazing concert. Both bands were great and put on a hell of a show. This was his hit single during that time. Brings back great memories.

He played with SRV at his last concert. At the end of the concert, all of the great players that were performing that night came out to jam for 16 minutes on "Sweet Home Chicago". That song resonated because most of the people at the concert were heading back to Chicago after the show via a long two lane road. Sure to be traffic. The performers were taking helicopters back to avoid the traffic. So Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Eric Clapton jam on Sweet Home Chicago and take a bow. SRV was in a hurry and wanted to be on the first chopper. It crashed into a large hill right after take off, and took him from us.

I remember well, working at a music store at that time, that everyone praised Robert Cray in the 80s to be the spearhead of the blues renaissance and because of him a lot of people rediscovered (and the younger ones got notice of them) the old greats like BB King, Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Co.

The first side of the Strong Persuader album is one of the strongest sides in the history of R&B. Right Next Door and I Guess I Showed Her are incredibly strong cuts that show his brilliance as a songwriter and lyricist, where he can paint such a rich and complex scene with a minimum of perfectly chosen words. Incredibly sophisticated. Ya'll could pay a little closer attention to his lyrics. Seems like you didn't catch what was going on in this song.

This came out on MTV when I was in 9th grade, in Virginia Beach. That summer, my Dad took me to a big festival in Norfolk, called Harborfest. I was stunned when we walked past a stage, and heard this being played. It was my first exposure to this genre, and I never looked back.

seen him live in Liverpool . What a gig ! when he is in the studio instead of all the band recording different parts at different times, he records what comes out the amp in one take with the band and thats whats on the record, so when you see him live its sounds just the same.. spot on . there is no substitute for class . also the horns on the strong persuader album are done by The Memphis Horns who are amazing. all my best to you and yours
