    this song is really interesting.
    it’s about deep obsession and dependency in a certain thing, almost an addiction to that thing. chan said him and hyunjin both relate the song to their obsession with work, all of stray kids are workaholics.
    usually in songs, people use metaphors to describe sex. in this song, sex IS the metaphor. and that is really fucking cool.

    • @hanniejaf

      not to mention the music video was shot by an openly gay director, so they knew what they were doing! korea is very conservative, there’s only a few openly gay idols (you could count them in one hand) and most companies don’t accept them.

    What Stays laughed about for so long, was in the making of the video. Hyunjin had to be corrected on his hold during the choke scene, but Chan did it correctly the 1st time. Everyone was like "Chris, you want to explain?"

    red lights uses bdsm as a metaphor for obsession, most specifically to their work. Chan and Hyunjin are both insane perfectionists and workaholics and they use the idea of pain and pleasure, doing things even when it hurts because they also gain pleasure from it, to describe their relationahip to their work!

  • @MalickaNeya
    @MalickaNeya Год назад +990

    Bangchan made the beat and then him and Hyunjin did the melody and lyrics together. (After 3racha, Hyunjin has the most song credits, he started taking classes for composing a few years back and likes it too, I guess that is why he shares the dorms with 3racha). The others nicely explained the theme. I see you are not used to Bangchan's proportions. He has a pretty thin waistline and that is his real bum...😅

    • @MalickaNeya
      @MalickaNeya Год назад +32

      @@RM_formerlyjustRMbutYTsucks True, but you can't really get all the info and amount of involvement from KOMCA. For example composing includes both the beat making and the making of melody or rap composition. Chan does both the beat and melody but gets the same composition credit as Binnie and Han who only do the melodies/rap composition and not the beat itself. That is really amazing for sure. I just wish they had these separately for clarity. Of course Chan sometimes does the arrangement too but that is a different thing. He can compose a beat and then have someone else do the specific instrumentation (arrangement).
      In Taste, Chan made the beat and arrangement so he has the composition and arrangemnet credits and danceracha did the melody and lyrics so they have composition and lyrics credits but we don't know if Chan also helped them with the melody. Or Ice cream. Chan did the beat and the arrangement and Hyunjin did lyrics and melody, so both have composition credits. Here many people assume Chan did the melody but it was just Hyunjin. Remember when they did Two Kids Song? All pairs got the same beat made by Chan and all pairs needed someone who had experience in melody composition, so 3 pairs had a 3racha member while the last pair had Hyunjin. And we heard some songs in Howl in Harmony that Hyunjin composed with Chan's beats. He said he has a lot. Of course other members are getting more and more involved but I would still say that Hyunjin the most after 3racha (and also has a lot of unreleased songs prepared) I also think that in the KOMCA credits Hyunjin might have one or two more composing credits, because you also get credits for lyrics only. I also think that Chan should be much higher on the list because many idols only do the lyrics or make one tiny little change in the lyrics or a melody and get the same credit as him (who does almost everything). But...he will be at the top soon enough so it's fine.

    "what in the 50 shades of Stray" LMAO
    This song was the first song of theirs I heard. I love that that they're able to drastically switch up genres like this, and be this good at it.
    Edit: The lyrics are actually really interesting. It's about obsession. With red lights being about how they can't live without their passion for making music. Like you said, "drowning in their work". Chan says "set the mic up" at some point in the song refering to how he's always producing, always writing, always working and he loves it. Even if it is not exactly "good for him" (red lights). Bang Chan is known to lose sleep sometimes because of how hard he works. With Hyunjin, his passion would fall more into his dancing. He puts everything into his art it's amazing to see. I'm not sure how much you enjoy their choreos as a group but I highly recommend Hyunjins Post Malone dance cover. I find it mesmerizing how choreos can bring attention to details in songs I never catch or think about.
    Edit: Bang Chan and Hyunjin had such opposite reactions to this music video it was hilarious to watch.

They also met up with the mv director novvkim (i hope im saying it right 😭) they work alot with to make music videos for the unit songs. so basically, the songs were made first and the music videos were then made based off of them and what the members wanted to put in. i really love how novvkim took skz' ideas and his own vision and put them together to create the music videos, they really fit the songs. also, bang chan and hyunjin talk alot more about red lights and other things they created together in their episode so feel free to check that out! it's always fascinating to watch skz work on music

    Oh man, i knew you wouldn't be ready.
    They(Hyunjin helped design/direct) created an OT8 version for the Maniac tour and it was INCREDIBLE and intoxicating. I'm sure someone else said it but the Korean name of the song, 강박 (gangbak), means compulsion and it is intended to be about something, anything, that you have a toxic compulsion and draw towards. Bang Chan specifically said his toxic compulsion to work or relationship to himself.
    Hyunjin has said Chan is his teacher of sexy things so... That's been left to our interpretation.
    And yes. Bang Chan is just built like that. If you look at any of the pics from more recent than a year ago (when this song was released) he's only gotten stronger.

  • @corn-jl5vy
    @corn-jl5vy Год назад +21

    the way i interpreted this after some analysis (i think that’s the right word) is that chan and hyunjin are two different sides of the same person. chan being the more “responsible” side, and hyunjin being the more “fun” side. in the scenes where they were being choked, chan looked like he was trying to get the hand off his neck and like he hated it. hyunjin on the other hand, seemed to be almost smiling and he seemed comfortable with it, he wasnt trying to take the hand off in any way.
    then, in the part where chan lifted hyunjin, it can show that one cannot survive without the other i guess.
    also, in the beginning, hyunjin was bound by chains. later on in the mv, the chains were replaced by ropes. ropes are much less heavy and are much less harsh on the skin. the ropes also did not limit his movement as much, while the chains almost completely restriced moving freely. the ropes are kinda like hes becoming more free.
    however, chan never was free from those chains. the only time we see him in ropes was when he was tied to hyunjin.
    in the hallway scenes, hyunjin was dragging something by a rope. chan looked like he was being dragged by a chain. so maybe hyunjin was dragging chan.
    in the beginning of the mv, chan was choking hyunjin. but at the end, it was hyunjin who was choking chan.
    to sum this long af thing up, chan seemed to be more “dominant” in the beginning, but hyunjin ended up being the “dominant” one in the end. like i said earlier in this comment, hyunjin was the more “fun” one, and chan was the more “serious” one.
    from what i see, this mv and song could be about seggs, but could also be about the fact that being serious doesnt exactly always win and that fun is just better in general. sorry for this long af comment lol. not sure if anyone is even gonna read this.

    I especially love what you said at the end that you saw the dance as interpretive and meaning more because I’ve dealt with so many family members that have gone through drug addiction and when I see this video to me it reminds me of the struggle of being addicted to something almost deadly and I feel like they embody what that looks like so well with the dark feel of the video and the chains and all of the details this is a masterpiece

  • @littlelonelysoul2683
    @littlelonelysoul2683 Год назад +156

    I really hope that you’ll search for the real meaning of this song because is so much more that what it seems. The concept of the mv is sexy but not the song itself. The korean title is compulsion so basically they’re talking about that. The strong obsessions they have. Both Chan and Hyunjin are very perfectionists when it comes to their work. To the point that no matter how tired they are they’re always on something. Like they just can’t stop.
    You can what their serie How In Harmony. Each unit have an episode explaining their song
    But what I love about this song is that it’s written in a way that everyone can interpret the lyrics in their own way. Like it can talk about something, a lover, a friend, a family member etc..
    Also Chan said himself that he has the biggest bum out of Stray Kids so.. haha

    The way sex IS the metaphor for ANYTHING that has a hold on you - and the title, for MANY Red Lights make you think of the red light district in Amsterdam or songs like Roxanne "you don't have to turn on the red light" in THIS case it references the red light that would be on outside a recording studio booth so you know someone is live and recording in there.
    SKZ and 3Racha in particular have an absolutely AMAZING way of wording a message and having the music (and videos) support that message.

    This song is not only very sensual, but also with purpose, which is why I love it so much! There’s obviously a Theme with the video, and considering their intention of writing about obsessions (with work, in their case, if I’m not wrong) I think it was a genius choice! Love, passion, work… uh.. the ~sexy stuff~ (to keep it PG xD)- those are strong themes that can people can relate easily to becoming obsessed with. Aaand~ a song about being obsessed with work would hardly have the same impact (although.. being it Stray Kids, they could make it work xD)

    Okay, but about your embarrassing, when you said that you weren't used to seeing them like that. you've experienced their duality right now, congratulations!!! they can easily fool you if they want to. they can be funny, they can seem serious, or they can go into a sexual concept. so they play with the feelings of the fans (in a good way). however, we don't mind it, haha! we even call the two sides of Bang Chan in a special way. Channie is the Chan we are used to seeing. And Christopher... Well, here, I think, it is already clear 🤣🤣

    I initially thought the song/video was maybe about a romantic relationship but I read somewhere that it’s supposed to be about their internal struggle with sometimes feeling like they’re a slave to their work. I was surprised but when I went back and listened to the lyrics again, seeing the symbolism in the video as well, it very much is a depiction of how we sometimes are slaves to certain things in our lives and we have to learn to balance these things in a healthy way.

    The credits are under the MV, it's Hyunjin and Bangchan who made the song, and the meaning behind it is not supposed to be sexual, it's about obssession, being obssessed with work more specifically, they explained that in the EP3 and EP4 of the SKZ how in Harmony series, and btw you have a very good voice tho, you're just flexing casually like that?

    In simple words: they both represent each other as they share the same emotions, feelings, pain and so on. Although the concept of the mv is “sexy”, the meaning of the song however, alludes to one being obsessed with something/ someone to a point that it has literally taken over their entire existence and has become their top priority as such to a point where life without it/ them is insignificant/ meaningless. Whilst explaining, Chris said that thing song is a reflection of the obsessive nature( and toxic tbh) of his work ethic as well as the “compulsion” (hence the Korean title of the song) that he feels to be working in order to basically stay alive.
    The dichotomy between the mv and the lyricism supposedly support the idea that working in this industry may seem appealing and inviting, however, the struggles and the real challenges are often overlooked at.

    It’s one of the most beautiful songs ever. They get really embarrassed whenever they watch it back.
    Korea is very homophonic, but you have to remember idols sign no relationship clauses in their contracts for about 5 years. They have very few “co-ed” bands so have to bounce off each other. It’s very homoerotic for Korea and considering that most STAYS are young teens they have to be careful

    • @Brickerbrack
      @Brickerbrack Год назад +3

      As I understand it, while South Korea still doesn't have legalised gay marriage etc, and is pretty conservative in a lot of ways, that trend seems to be changing. Obviously many of the younger generations are helping that, and while companies may want their idols to be careful what they say, there are plenty of idols and groups who are very open about their support for the LGBTQ+ communities. And while entirely anecdotal, I'm not sure even many of the older generations are as conservative as we may think.
